Audiobooks totally count! Audiobooks are a great way for people who have to spend a lot of time in a car or on a bus to enjoy books they might not have time for. An audiobook can be a very different experience, too, if the reader is exceptional or it's a full cast.

Libraries are great places for free books, even for your Kindle. ;-)

I think controversial books aren't necessarily books that have been banned or challenged - and vice versa! When I get the folders set up for each category there will be a thread for suggestions.

153078 Welcome to the 2016 challenge!

The main goal is for everyone to read books that they might not otherwise choose, thus expanding beyond their comfort zone. Members of the 2015 group worked together through discussion and voting to come up with list of categories, and most of them allow for plenty of flexibility. We've also added a wild card category, because everyone reads books that just don't fit one of the categories - and those should count too!

We also found in 2015 that reading 52 books isn't realistic for everyone, so this year we have a two tier challenge.

Tier One

Read 36 books selected from the categories. Up to four may be "wild card" books of your choice.

Tier Two

Read a book from each of the 43 categories, plus 9 "wild cards" for a total of 52 books.

153078 Now that we're nearing the end of the year, I'm going to start updating this group to reflect the 2016 challenge. Again - thanks to EVERYONE for your input on next year's challenge. It is truly the result of discussion and voting, and reflects the great group of people we have here.

Cheers!

153078 I loved this book, and have read it several times!

153078 I admit, this one is a stretch but Christmas occurred and was mentioned in this book! It took place over a short time period including the holidays.

It was a weird one, but I liked it.

153078 Man, you guys are impressive! I'm just going to keep plugging away and see what I can do...

I have an audiobook that's the second in my trilogy, and with all of the driving I have to do in the next month I might be able to fit the third in that way too.

153078 So, my husband recommended this book to me for this category. I did not realize it was 1100 pages long!!!

However, it was well worth the read. It's the (barely) fictionalized account of Gary Gilmore, the first person executed in the US after a long hiatus, and the circus that surrounded the event. I'd heard of Gary Gilmore, in particular from the song "Gary Gilmore's Eyes" by the Adverts. I did not know the full story until now. While I come away from the story with no sympathy for Gary Gilmore, I have an even greater disdain for the barbarity of the death penalty as a form of punishment.

I highly recommend this book!

How did the 2015..."

The 2015 list came from this website: http://www.popsugar.com

I just ran across it (on Pinterest maybe?), and thought it would be fun to start this group after talking to a few of my friends. There are other Goodreads groups based around the 2015 challenge, but if I do say so ours is the best. :-)

I'll be updating this group soon to reflect our new, independent reading challenge for 2016!

Interesting! I took a look, and they only have 40 categories this year, some of which are similar to ours.

I think this is the last one! One word title?

If this is the book about Robin Hood, I really enjoyed it.

A-ha! I'll move it. AND that is why I don't make assumptions, because when I do I goof it up.
