I must assert that our HVAC guy is local and very trustworthy! He is actually headed out for a week's vacation in Florida tomorrow morning, but still managed to get here this morning. He said the coolant is level was low and we most likely have a slow leak somewhere, but he did remove a piece of bark that had gotten "inside" the system. And...that is all I know or can speak about! 😁
At least we now have chilled air to get us through today. Temps are to be in the 70s over the next week or so, so we can survive even if it doesn't keep working well!

I can appreciate your frustration. I can only imagine that you have much more detailed knowledge about such matters than the majority of the general population! However, even I know that the fluid emitted by window A/C units is just water/condensation! Sheesh! 😋

152458 I finally just picked up a couple of juvenile books this past weekend. I was burned out from such a busy week!

Our A/C is not working correctly and it is supposed to get into the mid-80s today! Our HVAC guy is supposed to be here to check it out some time this morning. Fingers crossed that all that is needed is coolant! 😊 Otherwise, we may be running around the house naked this afternoon and evening!! LOL Well, perhaps not… I’m not sure either of us could withstand looking at each other all day long! LOL Older bodies are not necessarily 'enjoyable scenery' after all!

SOME LISTS!

Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley are set to star in ‘The Thursday Murder Club’ with Chris Columbus to direct. I love all three of them, but especially Pierce! (Yes, I consider us on a ‘first name’ basis! LOL) I loved this book and although I’m usually not overly-thrilled about adaptations, this is one that truly interests me!

Question of the Week:
Nonreading question this week...
Have you ever had an experience that confirmed your actions were impactful to someone else?
I imagine that can happen often with teachers, engineers, medical professionals, lawyers, etc. And I was always able to convince myself that whatever “job” I was working at was important to more than just myself and my coworkers. I worked mostly in higher education administration during my full-time working years, so I did feel as if any time I could help a student, staff, or faculty member, someone’s educational experience was the better for my efforts. And that was great! However…my experience last Friday proved that even my little ol’ part-time job as a bookseller at Borders had important ramifications for others. Mainly authors!

Now, I realize that makes sense, but in this particular instance, it was much more pertinent than I had ever imagined! And this realization and recognition occurred in a most unexpected place! At the Indy Book and Author Luncheon (https://indybookandauthor.org/) last Friday! I had failed to register for this event in time to obtain a ticket, so asked to be placed on a “waitlist” for one. Lo and behold, I received an email last Tuesday that a ticket had become available, and I snapped it up!

One of the authors was Heather Gudenkauf. I remembered her fondly as one of the first authors whose book, The Weight of Silence, Borders selected as a ‘featured’ read. Please understand--I was usually the ONLY staff member who read each of these books as they were selected and then posted a review in the store, as well as informing each of my coworkers of more details about the book so they could better speak with customers about it. (I think that boosts my ranking as a bibliophile nerd, don’t you?!? LOL) Anyway, as Ms. Gudenkauf and I are talking, I mention having worked at Borders, and she looks at me and said, “You know, Borders really made my career as a writer…” I’m like, “Really?” She replied that her publisher called her as soon as Borders had chosen to feature this debut novel of hers and informed her that this would “make” her career as a writer… Now, no doubt, if her writing was not well liked and appreciated by readers overall, this selection wouldn’t have mattered much. However, since her writing continued to interest and please readers, it did help launch her career.

I told her that I was one of the few employees entrusted to make hourly announcements in the store, mainly because I wasn’t scared to pronounce her name, and it thrilled me to think that my efforts had somehow truly enabled an author to succeed! So you just never know what impact your efforts will have upon someone else’s life!

I’m curious to know of others’ experiences which may have confirmed that your actions impacted someone else’s life who may or may not be connected to you personally.

Apr 30, 2024 12:10PM

152458 VERY late posting...
I have had a very full schedule over the past week:
*IRL book club meetings on Sunday and Tuesday for which I read two books, of course!
*Tuesday and Wednesday mornings were filled with unexpected phone calls from friends needing to talk and have a someone listen. I regretted losing the reading time, but never regret listening to and talking with friends…
*Today my husband and I both had appointments with our Primary Care Provider. I FINALLY was able to get a manipulation after two months! I hadn’t gone that long between manipulations since I began going to this D.O. 3 years ago! He was flabbergasted at how messed up my spine was! (I, however, wasn’t a bit surprised! LOL)

He gave me some very good news! I finally had hip and spinal Xrays done to see exactly what is going on to give me so much discomfort. I am to the point that I must carefully plan time spent cooking, cleaning, etc., allowing for rest and icing my back and knees as needed. As of about 6 months ago I’ve had to start limiting my time up and about in the house to 30-45 minutes at a time. If I’m up and doing things for an hour or more, I am in some real pain. And please do not take this the wrong way—I am NOT complaining, just realizing I really needed to know the cause(s) and whether any interventions other than working out in the heated therapy pool, using the nutritional program that is my main source of food, icing, and using Aleve when necessary, were possible to provide relief. So, firstly, I have a “congenital anomaly” (In other words, a birth defect!)—my hips are asymmetrical and have been my whole life. So, yes, I am literally unbalanced!! And always have been! LOL My D.O. stated that explained much of what he has discovered in treating me these past 3 years… 😊

It also appears that my L5 vertebra has fused to my sacrum. Ugh. That doesn’t sound good, and trust me, it isn’t! LOL Depending upon any increase in pain and discomfort in the future, I may need some additional testing to determine whether surgery might be necessary. Okay. That doesn’t sound pleasant, but at least surgery doesn’t appear to be imminent for now…

But…the GREAT GOOD NEWS was that my hip joints appear to be perfectly healthy with no apparent osteoarthritis!! That is remarkable! Also, there is very little osteoarthritis throughout my spine. Except for the L5/sacrum debacle where there is quite a bit of osteoarthritis, my spine is fairly clear! I consider that to be remarkable! Almost a miracle! He agrees with me that 9 hours per week of working out and teaching in the heated therapy pool over the last 7 years has helped me avoid the development of more osteoarthritis in my body! Whoo! Whoo! I was soooooo relieved! I have been told rehabbing hip replacements is much easier than knee joint replacements, but honestly, the more surgery I can avoid, the better, IMO! He also stated that there is very little osteoarthritis in the pubic bones and given the L5/sacrum situation, there usually would be a ton of it there!

His advice—keep doing what I’ve been doing, because it appears to be working in my favor! The big lesson here folks is to not quit your workout routine! I abandoned my workout routine while overseeing my mother’s healthcare and caring for her the last 5 years of her life, then went another 5 years or so without working out, and that’s when my knee joints literally locked up with osteoarthritis. So keep on keepin’ on! That self-care for caregivers is a must! And that is why I’m still spending 15 hours per week on the road to and from the gym and working out/teaching in a heated therapy pool, even though my husband’s health is deteriorating. I can’t totally sacrifice my own health. Period.

My husband keeps improving from the stroke overall, though he will definitely benefit from PT and OT which begin next week.

Question of the Week:
Do you have a favorite spot to read?
I have an armchair and ottoman in the living room which is the main place I read, except over the last 6 months or so, I can only stay in this chair 1-2 hours and then my back hurts so much, I go to the kitchen table and use one of those chairs, putting my feet up on the legs of the kitchen table to help alleviate my back pain. Of course, now I know why I experience so much back pain! LOL And it does seem to help me to be able to understand the cause!

It is quite poignant and as one member stated, “It was difficult to keep reading through the tears.” However, we all felt it offered much information about Ireland at the time of WWI and the “Spanish” flu. It is set in 1918. We all felt we learned a lot and loved these characters! This definitely held up as a reread for me!

This just confirmed my suspicions from the first book!

Totally! Though it made sense!!

3) What surprised you the most by the end of the book?
I think I was most surprised at the gracious actions of the publisher in granting (view spoiler) YAY!!

152458 I doubt this is “big” news to anyone here, but I adore Ann Patchett’s Goodreads blog postings with book recommendations. I always discover so many books I may or may not have heard of anywhere else that absolutely intrigue me! It’s a TBR list explosion every time I read these posts: https://www.goodreads.com/author_blog...
Just in case others are also unaware… 😊 She is a co-owner of the Parnassus Books in Nashville, Tennessee, where she lives. I have read two of her books:
Bel Canto which tore me up emotionally! I believe it could only do that to me because of the exquisite writing! She took me right into the story and that explosive ending!
The Dutch House which was rather emotionally intense, also held much humor that appealed to me.
I really really need to read more of her writing!

My good news is that I am finally back to the gym in my usual routine. That helps me cope with life so very much better! 😁👍👏👏👏👏

Question of the Week:
What character have you encountered recently that you would like to meet in person? Why?
Having just read all 5 of Agatha Christie’s Tommy and Tuppence books, I would definitely like to meet them! They appear to be very compatible and have a good relationship and I would like to get to know them better.

Ann Ross’s Miss Julia character from the series. I’ve only read the first book, but I am fascinated by her! She really sticks up for feminist ideals even if only in her own small southern-U.S. town! I love her feistiness and determination!

Having now read two of Erle Stanley Gardner’s Perry Mason books, I would like to meet Della Street. She must often be the go-between for Mason, and I would love to know how that makes her feel at times…
