152301 I don't recommend this one because it's slow paced, but I recommend the other books in the series (of course, you have to read it before them).
For me King is a lot better in fantasy than horror (there is anyway some horror in his fantasy stories) and the Dark Tower is an amazing dystopia. I'm always pleased to see someone jumping on this train and I hope the travel will be interesting :)

152301 Feel free to choose a non realistic place for the one you want to visit, if you have no interesting idea for a real place (someone will read Harry Potter, I'll read Peter Pan for this week...) ;)

152301 Hi, there is already a thread for this book on this week ;)

152301 I lagged for week 5, but I'm now on track :D

152301 If you have enough time to read 2 books, go for it.
I did it for some weeks and will continue for some others ;) I didn't create a topic for all the books but I added them in my plan.

152301 I just finished my week 5 book, it was not what I expected, way more serious than what I usually read. I didn't enjoy it but found the story interesting, unusual for the time loop genre, and well written, in a nonfiction way. Sadly torture, torture and torture, so one star went away because of the awful memories I'll keep from the book x__x

I started my week 6 book this weekend, this one is magical and I'm enjoying it a lot :)

--
Changed: week 13. I suddenly found America boring and wanted something more exotic, so India is a nice topic.
I'll maybe change my "school book" as some people recommended me Fahrenheit 451. I'll decide later...
152301 Luckily the last 30% were page turners, if not I'm not sure I'd finished the book before next week!

What can I say? A quick list:
- the looper society parts are entertaining and with them, there are interesting tackled issues.
- there are too many torture scenes, with unnecessary descriptions. For me, torture can be used, like sex or abuse, but you don't have to detail it to build the story or the character. I'm sure in 2 years I will remember nothing about the book except these awful moments :(
- the story is well written, in a nonfiction way, hard to explain. With sci-fi books, you know it's not real, but with this one, I think I can meet Harry tomorrow and he'll tell me about his lives and I'll say "ok, I believe you".
- the historical part is more about the atmosphere than real details.

Overall I didn't enjoy it but found it interesting and unusual. It's a 4 stars book for me for sure, but I removed a star because of the tortures, so I rated it 3 stars.
Maybe I can recommend it to someone who likes time loop stories and wants something different in the genre, not comedy or romance based. It's really not head-lighted, so don't read it when you're in a bad mood.

152301 What did you read this week?
The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August

How did you choose this book? (recommendations, web search, etc..)
It was on the Goodreads Choice Awards and it has a number in the title :p

Did you enjoy it? (feel free to link to your book review)
Difficult question. It was not what I expected (it's really serious so I read it a lot slower than usual), it was slow paced and I had big troubles with the several torture scenes. However, the story is well written, in a surprise nonfiction way, the society of loopers is unusual and the book encourages you to think deeply about the decisions you make for your life.
I enjoyed the last 30% and found the first 70% interesting.

Would you recommend this title?
I don't think so, except if you want something different (and very serious) in the time loop genre.

152301 We are halfway done with Week 6! You discovered books written by new young authors or first works written by well-known authors. Tell us more about them :)

This discussion thread is solely for your progress. (Book discussions go in individual threads.)

152301 Thanks for the answer :)

152301 We'll read Dorian Gray for the same week (with at least another member :)).

You won't need to catch up a lot as you'll have plenty of free time with all the books you already read!
I like "Touch not the cat" as a title, did you like the book? :)
Feb 08, 2015 12:58PM

152301 The 1st seems interesting but there are some 1 star reviews and others with 5 stars, so it's a love or hate book. As it's a big book, I'm not sure about adding it or not to my to-read.
So, questions time: How do you liked the 1st? Can you tell me more about the pace (slow or page turner, long descriptions or action)? The summary is all about "girl power", is the main character an interesting woman? :)

152301 Welcome :)

Yes, there are several groups for this challenge (I think we are the 1st one or one of the first created). At the beginning I followed them to find other book ideas but with a big group like ours now, it's useless, I've too much ideas :p

152301 Ah, someone else reading Dorian Gray for the color week :D

Have fun with the challenge :)

152301 Roverandom looks interesting. My to-read list is over fat :p
Feb 08, 2015 06:32AM

152301 I used many books from my to-read list and wander(ed) on Goodreads (groups or book pages) for the other ones.
I didn't choose some categories as it will be easy to decide what to read at the moment or as I didn't find an interesting book and hope I'll discover a new one which could fit, during the year.

I read mostly in order because I want to discuss books and I follow the thursday rule to start a week (but I can start to read the book before or continue it after). I'm here since december, so it was easy to plan and start in time ;)

152301 Feb 7: The folder for week 14 (a nonfiction book) is now available. Think about adding a summary in your topic, with it, some members will probably add the book to their to-read list :)

152301 Week 14: a nonfiction book
April 2 - April 8, 2015

We hope you had enough fantasy times during the previous weeks, because for this one, reality will fill the pages. Society, wars, sciences, philosophy... there are lots of different topics, some more serious than others, so you just have to choose one you find interesting.

How to Create a Topic:
1. Create a topic in the appropriate folder using your book's author and title (Title by Author). Link your book with the "This topic is about" feature.

2. In the body of your post, comment about why you chose this book. Have you read it before? What are your expectations?

3. Feel free to use the thread as a way to update the group on your progress. Also, when you are finished reading, add a small review and your thoughts about the week's challenge.

4. Comment on everyone else's posts as well! Participation and group involvement will make this challenge so much fun!

**If you chose the same book as another group member for the same week, do not create a duplicate thread.**

152301 Yes, I see what you're talking about :p
I was intrigued too when I saw the 2nd book on the Goodreads Awards, so I decided to read the 1st one. I enjoyed a lot the pictures and the creepy stuff in the beginning :D After a moment I found the book too usual and was a little disappointed, but I'll read the sequel anyway :)
