Chapter 7After going to four stores and buying various items from each, Maggie declared they were ready.
When Lapis peered into her companion's bag, she only got more confused.
The bag consisted of fairly normal looking items, but there were some that seemed a little odd, even for Maggie. Inside were baseball caps, apples, string, torn-up-brand-new-pretty-cute-t-shirts, a small recording device from the prank shop, glow sticks, sunglasses, and even a few fake mustaches.
Lapis was no more enlightened than before, and looked up at Maggie for some form of clarification .
But she could find nothing in the woman's face, which was looking down at her with a mischievous glint in her eyes.
"What's all-" Lapis began, but Maggie only shook her head and placed a finger on her lips. "You'll find out soon enough, soon enough."
That didn't help her too much, but Lapis unhappily stayed quiet.
Maggie quickly checked her clock, "Mmm hmmmed" to herself and busily started towards the bus stop, bags in hand.
Lapis shrugged to herself and followed. The bus driver was just letting the last passenger on when he glimpsed Maggie marching confidentally up the street.
He frantically motioned for the elderly man to get in and tried to close the doors, but Lapis sprinted ahead and jammed her foot in the doors before they could fully close.
She winced, but grinned when the doors opened up again.
"Room for two more passengers" Lapis asked jovially.
"Um, no", the driver nervously coughed, "I just filled 'er up - er, next time, maybe..."
But Lapis had already barged in and was taking a seat near the back where many benches sat, clearly empty. In fact, the only passengers were in the front seats, the elderly man at lease seventy, two young women, fast asleep, and one young boy a few years younger than Lapis, by the looks of it.
The bus driver sighed and began closing the doors again, but Lapis called up the bus, "Oh, wait, my - er - friend is coming too."
The bus driver followed suit, a guilty looked crossing his face and he opened the doors sheepishly to let Maggie in. She stepped on with grace, hardly glanced at the other passengers, and immediately began shouting at the bus driver.
Lapis jumped in her seat, and through all the yelling could only hear bits and pieces.
"How rude! You should be ashamed of yourself!" Maggie shouted at the man, poking him in the chest with every word, and with every poke he seemed to shrink smaller and smaller until Maggie towered over him.
"But-But- I"
"No buts, Charlie Douglas, you did that on purpose, trying to take off like that, nearly leaving poor helpless passengers behind, not to mention a relative!"
"A relative!" Lapis said aloud in surprise.
"Yes, hon, this here, Charlie's my brother - little brother, mind you." she gave him another poke and a dirty look for good measure.
Mr. Charlie Douglas tried to defend himself from his older sister, but try as he might, she only poked him harder.
But finally, to the relief of the passengers - and a few that had woken up suddenly - and including Mr. Douglas himself, she apparently decided she had poked him enough, and walked down the aisle to Lapis, muttering all the while, "Well I never...Running off like that...very own sister...should be ashamed...telling mom...acting like a little boy...I never..."
When she sat down next to Lapis, the girl scooted over a couple inches, just to be safe.
