Nick was wide awake already unable to sleep. He knew this was the day he was leaving and he was terrified and heartbroken at the same time. He curled up and closed his eyes willing the bad thoughts to leave. He'll be fine and be home soon... he kept telling himself.

They've been dating for a couple years, your character could go off to the war leaving my character depressed after losing contact for a months. Then the brother can step in and try to cheer him up and get him to be hopeful again about the return while secretly hoping the brother doesn't return because he likes him? Then he eventually wins over my character and they are together for a few months before the old guy returns.
How about the first one? Minus the kids
