how to set and reach daily word goals
Setting a daily word goal can be daunting to say the least. Did you make it too high or too low? Do you really have to hit your goal every day? What if you can't?
The answer for most questions like this is "Every writer is different." You just have to find out how you need to go about this particular topic. And that is what I'm going to try to help with today.
So number one: How do you set a decent goal?
The best way I've found is to start small, say 200 words a day (or whatever you feel is a small, easy to hit amount) and if you go over by a lot consistently and feel confident every day that you can hit this goal then you can raise it. If you still feel the same ease and confidence, then you can raise it again. Once you hit the point where it feels like a challenge without being too intimidating then you've found a good daily word goal.
You can also have a number that isn't set or have a fallback goal.
Here's an example of the first: 1,000-1,200, this way you have a bit of breathing room and aren't pressed to hit one specific number.
An example of the second would be: You daily goal is 1,000 but you're struggling today or something comes up and know you can't hit it, so you go to your fallback goal of 600 words which seems more manageable, this way you still can get writing done without feeling pressured to hit a number you don't feel confident you can hit. (I use this tactic)
Now I would make sure that you have a solid plot in place before you set a high goal because eventually you're going to run out plotted scenes or get burned out if do not know enough to write the entire project. I have run into this problem so many times and I've found the best way is to just stop writing, put it on hold, and figure out everything you need to know before continuing. Once you're good to go the writing should come easier and you can successfully hit that high goal.
But what if I can't hit my goal every day?
Then that's okay! You can give yourself days off if you need them or have different word goals for each day of the week. Like on school or work days you can have a 500 word goal while on weekends or days you don't have to do anything you can double that and go for 1,000. You could even have days where you just get as much as you can done without a goal in mind if you need. A goal is meant to keep you productive and always working forward, stressing about it could only lead to a burnout or writers block, so if you feel stressed or you're always worried you can't hit your daily goal then it's probably best to lower it just enough where you feel comfortable again and can write without stressing about too much. Remember you can always raise it again.
What happens if I get writers block?
Writers block is bound to hit everyone at some point, it's inevitable. So, if it does manage to sneak up on you then (and again every writer is different) you can either lower your goal (or drop it completely if that works for you) and push through until you're able to raise it again or you can put writing on pause and work on character development or world building. But whatever you do, do not abandon your project, even if you say it's only temporary, because if you stop then it's so much harder to pick it back up when you feel like writing. You don't even have to do anything "work like", for example the last time I got in a major writing slump I made a very detailed map of my books' world (which is something I highly recommend as it's fun and it really helps during writing and it just gives the world of the book another dimension of volume and detail).
That's all for now since I basically wrote this while procrastinating when I should be writing, I hope this helps this helps someone, and if you have any questions or anything to add feel free!

Lol Yes we do
The Who did this to you? One
😏"
oh oki, *rubs hands together like Golem* can't wait to see what you came up with

Was this that instance
I also came up with the scene while half-asleep, for the trope"
yup, that was this
you're going to have to be more specific because we have so many tropes 😂

How am I supposed to sleep now lol
Also, that emoji just makes me smile all the time xx 🥲"
ah the curse of character deaths
same, it's kinda cute honestly

A few of my emotions right now
But I know you will make it mean so much and you'll do it in the best, most heart wrenching way, so don't be sorry and do it apologetically while I just find..."
I'll cry with you 🥲

I'm sorry 😭 but it needs to happen"
at least you know now though instead of me just sending you the scene at random and you fully experiencing it

Carry on with synonyms, like we are doing right now lol"
