you write the book from two peoples povs, the hero and the villain, but at the end it's revealed they're the same person

mmkay so the best way to figure this out would probably be to ask yourself a few questions. for example...
~ what is the genre of your book and/or time period? because you're not going to have that past experience be something modern in a medieval world. if it's fantasy then other more magical factors could play a part but if it's more realistic then it would be a more life-like experience.
~ another one could be... what is the relationship that was between these two characters before? like if they're siblings then it could be a family thing, if they were lovers something different, maybe they were just strangers. figuring that out should help narrow the field.

also if you know how you want their rivalry to be already then you can ask yourself what would make you act like that. it doesn't even have to be directly connected to the characters themselves
for example - my MCs had a rival/enemy relationship when they first met because their two homelands had been at war, they never actually fought each other before but it was enough for them to be against each other
