118012 I like the idea of using the same categories for both and letting members decide how they fit if they're using Boxall's list.

I suppose the pie could have 7 pieces. I could get them to fit!

Glad to have given you a treasure trove of reading planning! I really like the look of the Guardian's list a lot.

118012 Ok, I'm thinking some kind of pie (Trivial Pursuit style), with 6 pieces. They could be date ranges for Boxall's and themes for Guardian's, and the participant has to choose which version they are doing.

The Guardian list is broken up by 7 themes (so readers would only have to do 6): love, crime, comedy, family and self, state of the nation, science fiction and fantasy, war and travel.

Do you think the Boxall's list could be easily broken up into 6 date ranges?

OR - combine into one big pie with 12 pieces, using both dates and themes.

118012 I almost feel like any Dickens fits at Christmas time. Probably because that's when the TV adaptations always played when I was growing up!

118012 How does mix-n-match work?
Dec 03, 2015 07:59PM

118012 Hmm. I'll have to think about that some.

It could be simple like the Award winners one (read a chosen number of books that are on either list), or we could make it a bit more complicated with genre/category, or time period included. I'm not sure what the best format would be. It could be a Bingo, or something else. I'll mull it over and report back. :)

118012 Renee, I was also looking at the Boxall's and Guardian's lists of books to read before you die, and wondering if we could do some kind of challenge around those. What do you think?

118012 The TBR challenge looks great - thanks, Renee!
Nov 15, 2015 06:49PM

118012 Yes - 5 at least feels manageable for now!
Nov 15, 2015 08:10AM

118012 Oh dear - I didn't even include all the group reads I didn't get to. Maybe we should have another mini-challenge next year just for those, Renee.

118012 Renee wrote: "I'm also hoping Alison will bring the Awards Challenge back for 2016."

Definitely, Renee!

118012 Renee wrote: "Of those you've listed I've only read The Vor Game and Rebecca, but both were excellent. If that helps with the narrowing."

Both of those are award winners, too - so maybe I'll kill two birds with one stone.

118012 What are my favorite elements?

I really like the mini-challenges best because you can do so much with them and keep it fresh. I also enjoyed the genre and world lit challenges. Although I didn't manage to do them every month, it did help me get to some books that I wouldn't have. And the Points challenge is a fun bonus activity. Who doesn't like to add up points??

I'd like to see more...

I'd like to see more challenges related to making progress on series and on TBR (owned) books. I'm thinking I need to focus heavily on those two things next year, since they are getting out of hand for me! Whether it's through mini-challenges or something else.

Voting on books

I stopped voting on the monthly choices because I found that I wasn't getting around to reading them, and didn't want to skew the results.
