It's amazing how it does that, isn't it?

Good plan!

James Herriot! Excellent choice. :)

Haha, I love your theme!

It might be difficult to use an ereader on a deserted island. ;)

Oh sorry, no, I meant that each one of his novels was written that way - he would publish them a few chapters at a time in magazines, and when he reached the end of the story, the many parts would be published together as a single novel. I didn't mean that all of his novels have to be read in succession. Each one is a stand-alone story, but the 800+ pagers can be viewed as multiple regular-sized novels that have been slapped together into one volume, if the size of them seems intimidating.

If you knew you were going to be stranded indefinitely on a deserted island, what 3 novels would you take to keep you company?
I'm asking for NOVELS here, so no Raft-Building For Dummies allowed. ;)
My picks would be A Tale of Two Cities, Jane Eyre, and Rilla of Ingleside, since those are the novels I re-read the most and can't imagine living without. What about you?

I'm sure you weren't being a bother, Amber. Reading groups often have to set rules like that, otherwise people will join groups just to promote their own writing, and that can get out of control really quickly. They have to enforce the rule with everyone if the rule is there, not just you. Don't take it personally.

Quite a lot! LOL
It might help to keep in mind that he wrote his novels in a serialized format, so they're like multiple books in one. No different from reading a 3-book series, really.

Welcome, Jessica! Feel free to join in even if you haven't read a lot. I'm sure you'll be given a lot of encouragement here. :)

Noooo, the banners are all Holly's doing. I agree, the new one is so pretty!

Anyone else who has yet to add their total for January... sorry to say it, but you're out of luck. I won't be adding any more numbers to this total for January. Since this is a challenge about how many books we as a group manage to read, I'd rather not include the books that newcomers read before they joined this group, and any regular members who haven't seen this thread by now... well, where have you guys been?? :P
As I said in my previous post, I'll be opening a new thread for the February numbers at the end of the month. PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR FEBRUARY NUMBERS IN THIS THREAD. I WILL NOT COUNT THEM.
I'll be keeping this thread open for conversation and questions.
Thanks, gang!

I counted you as reading 13 in January, Amber, and I'm not counting February's numbers in this thread.

Also, just so everyone can prepare for posting their February numbers - what I'll be asking for is the number of books you read in FEBRUARY, not your total number of books so far this year. I realize this is going to get confusing now that we're moving into the second month, so I just want to be clear. I'm trying to keep track of the numbers each person has posted, and I'll double-check on everyone's GR page just to be sure if I think there's been some confusion, but that will be extremely time consuming for me.
Also also, when posting your results, please don't give me more than one number to choose from. If you're not sure how many books you read in February, go to your "read" bookshelf and check the dates that you finished them. If you don't, then I have to find your page and do it myself, so it would save me a lot of time and trouble if you double-checked and made sure of the number before posting. And again, just to be clear - if you've counted a book towards your goal, it will also count towards the group goal. Please don't ask me to decide whether or not something counts.
I'll leave this thread open throughout the year so that everyone can discuss the goal and ask any questions they need to ask, but when I open the February thread I'm going to ask that there be no discussion going on in that thread, only numbers. I love that you guys are really excited about this challenge, and I want everyone's enthusiasm to continue! I'm just a cranky baby when it comes to math, so a straightforward numbers-only thread would make it a heck of a lot easier for me to handle, heh heh!
Thanks, gang! You guys are awesome. Keep up the good reading. :)

Still working on that, but I'm almost there. I've finally figured out a system that makes it easier to be sure I don't miss anyone or count anyone twice. I just wanted to be sure I was 100% accurate with the tally. I'll be posting January's number shortly!

6 ahead! Nice!
