118012 I'm going to nominate Cousin Bette.

118012 Here's the thread for your YA Group Read nominations!

Remember, please include a link to the book if you can, and I'd prefer only one nomination per member.
118012 September's genre-of-the-month is Classic/Literary, which might take a bit of explaining.

We're defining "Classics" as books that have stood the test of time - let's say 50 years old or older - and are still widely read and discussed.

We're defining "Literary" as fiction of any genre that has "literary merit," meaning that it offers some sort of social or political commentary, or the writing style somehow tests the boundaries of literature. Wiki has a more in-depth description of literary fiction here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Literary...

Basically, we're looking for the classics of yesteryear and/or the literature of today that will probably be considered classics by the next generation.

This is the thread for your nominations! Remember, please include a link to the book if you can, and I'd prefer only one nomination per member. No YA nominations for this group read, please.

But in the mean time, I've been spending the last two years on a historical account of Winston Churchill by William R. Manchester called"

I'm hoping to read that Winston Churchill biography this year! I just finished Edmund Morris' biography series on Theodore Roosevelt, which was awesome. :)

118012 I discovered just in time yesterday that Chapters (Canada's big bookstore chain) was having a 3-for-$10 sale on select classics! I jumped on that like a life raft on a perilous sea. ;)

Lord Jim
Nostromo
The Secret Agent
Heart of Darkness
Vanity Fair
Cousin Bette
Animal Farm
Martin Chuzzlewit
The Mayor of Casterbridge

I've already read 5 of those, but now I'll have them on my shelves, and I basically got them free! :D

That's really cool! It sounds like you've got the best of both personality groups. :)

118012 My #1 choice would be Ella Minnow Pea. It's so entertaining, but philosophical at the same time, and the way the author bends and breaks the English language as the book goes on is absolutely incredible. It should be on everyone's favourite-books shelf!

118012 Some books get so much attention that it starts to drive you nuts - Harry Potter, Twilight, Hunger Games, 50 Shades of Grey, The DaVinci Code... you'd have to be living under a rock to avoid hearing about them! Whereas other books are all but overlooked - they're published, they're read and enjoyed by those who happen upon them, but they never get the limelight that they deserve.

What books that you have read WOULD be hugely popular if you had your way, but have been sadly overlooked by the rest of the world?

118012 I'm sorry everything's been so quiet around here. I've been dealing with family stuff, a flooded basement, and complete and utter exhaustion. I've barely been able to read lately, let alone discuss reading. :(

Such a tragedy. He's always been so troubled, poor guy. :(

118012 Welcome, Topazriver! I second what everyone else has said, but I just want to add that I love your name!

118012 If you had a friend who has never been into reading, doesn't know what genre they'd like, but wants to give reading a try, what book would you recommend to get them started? Would you choose something different for a male friend and a female friend?
