118012 Excellent!!! Great going!
I used the Joan Didion for my Y one year, too. Such an interesting memoir. :)

Chit Chat (1184 new)

118012 Thanks, Guys! She’s insanely talented. :D

The premier of the show is Monday, March 21. They will showcase 11 performers/songwriters at a time. Alexis will have her debut on April 11.
I just can’t believe that she will be on national tv... and potentially seen by the whole planet!

I’m in perpetual squee-mode.

118012 Oh, my! The Chit Chat thread has been moribund for the last two years. I think this is a testament to how thoroughly overwhelming this time has been for all of us.

I actually just wanted to jump on here to share some wonderful personal news...

My niece, Alexis Cunningham, has been chosen to represent her home state of West Virginia in the upcoming American Song Contest!!! The show is based on the very popular Eurovision program. I’m so so SO excited for her and proud of her. And I just wanted to share the joy!

118012 I reread some Tommy & Tuppence. I remember just living them when I was in my teens and 20s. Now I find them charming, but they don’t resonate with me the way Miss Marple now does. Amusing that the opposite used to be true. The elderly Jane Marple didn’t draw me the way she does now. Hercule Poirot, on the other hand, transcended. :)

118012 Oppenheim! I read The Great Impersonator a while back and thought it was a blast. I need to try him again. :)

118012 This year-long challenge is based on the game of Clue. Each character from the game represents the career of the MAIN CHARACTER (male or female) of the book you read.
For example, for Miss Scarlet/career in law you might go with The Firm. For MrGreen you might choose The Name of the Rose.

Miss Scarlet: career in law
Colonel Mustard: career in the military
Nurse White: career in medicine
Reverend Green: career in religion
Professor Plum: career in education
Mrs. Peacock: career in business
Sergeant Gray: career in law enforcement
Mr. Brown: career as a con artist or spy

Extra-Credit..
Mr. Black/Mr. Boddy: is dead or dies in the story

Some interesting history on the game...

118012 One of my favorites! This will run all year.
26 Books in one year, each beginning with a different letter of the alphabet. (Not counting articles like "a," "an" or "the") to create your own special Alphabet Soup.

For example:
A- And the Band Played On: Politics, People, and the AIDS Epidemic
B- Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity
C- The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper
Etc.

You may use books that are from other challenges.
You may want to create a post with just the alphabet, then fill in books as you read them. Or create a "master list" of what you plan to read, then check them off as you finish each.

This thread is also the place to come for ideas on titles for letters that are trickier to find.

The letter X is always a special challenge. Here are some suggestions for dealing with this exasperating letter:
1) A book title that starts with X
Example: Xingu
2) A title in which X plays a prominent part
Example: The Autobiography of Malcolm X
3) A "number" title
Example: 1984
