The Pure Product by John Kessel ★☆☆☆☆ That was terrible. Time travelers, or aliens, randomly killing people.
I live in south Texas and buy hot foodstuffs all the time. Sometimes I find awesome treats, like Hatch Chili and Lime Cookies, but usually they are not actually hot. But a few days ago I had my mouth set ablaze by Mrs. Renfro’s Ghost Pepper Nacho Cheese Dip. I’ve been eating a little every day trying to get use to it. It clears my sinuses, lol. It’s yummy and real! Try if you like heat, or as a shock for family members you don’t like 😉Cookies: https://www.heb.com/product-detail/ce...

Sailing to Byzantium by Robert Silverberg ★★★★½ That was beautiful. I wept. Tragedy made into immortal love - into hope.
Friends, let us begin the year in praise of our Lord Cthulhu, may our minds survive his shattering blessing in order to enter our second lives. Please let me know which Anthology/Collection you wish to honor him with.
Fire Watch by Connie Willis ★★★★☆ I started over and then let myself sleep on it. Yes, there were some massive gaps but they were patched over with human kindness. Not my kind of story, but these feels hit home.
Even where it’s darkly beautiful I just think, “Wow, you weren’t even trying.” You’re right, it’s breathtaking.

Canavan reminded me that I have read The Night Wire twice. When I thought it was derivative of King’s The Mist, I gave it three stars. When I knew it was a weird classic from the 20s I hailed it with five stars. Lol, context. None of this helped me enjoy Xebico.
Well, I found this a disappointing collection. Horror shorts should have the finality of knife or the mind destroying agony of an endless echoing scream.
Brushdogs ★★☆☆☆ A father and son hunting trip ends in a hell loop. Or that’s my best guess after listening to the ending twice.
This story was not included in the audiobook but I found it in Nightmare Magazine.
Solve for X ★★☆☆☆ Torture porn. It was hard to read and I did not finish.
Uncle ★★☆☆☆
A boring marriage comes to a boring end. Why she haunted him would have been interesting if I understood it. I don’t. I relistened three times and just decided he was a creep.
Drawing on the mythology of the Green Man and the power of nature, Neil Gaiman, Jane Yolen, and others serve up “a tasty treat for fantasy fans.”There are fifteen stories, and three poems, all featuring “diverse takes on mythical beings associated with the protection of the natural world.”
These enduring works of eco-fantasy by some of the genre’s most popular authors impart “a real sense of how powerful nature can be in its various guises.”
