The Nebraskan and the Nereid by Gene Wolfe ★★★½☆ A folklore researcher goes to the Greek isle in search of mermaid myths. A poor local girl falls in love with him, and conspires to give him his mermaid. It was sad.
The Mermaid Game by Chris Howard ★★★☆☆ “The dead do not forget. The living do.”
In a strange and over-long tale a mermaid helps a widowed author work through his pain and write again.
Rusalka by Anna Taborska ★★★☆☆ A young man far from home, but in ancestral lands, searches for a beautiful girl and finds death instead.
The Mermaids Singing Each to Each by Cat Rambo ★★☆☆☆ Depressing. After being raped at 13 Lolo chooses to become gender neutral - a free service for rape victims. Unfortunately, she didn’t understand just how expensive the medical bills would be to claiming a gender. As a poor villager she had to accept working the boat she was raped in. And there were mermaids, but it didn’t lift the story.
Flotsam by Amanda Downum ★★★½☆ "Down and down and down, into the cathedral of the abyss, to an altar-throne where things older than gods hold court."
A dying Irish woman comes home to see if her first love still waits for her.
The White Hands (2003) by Mark Samuels ★★★★☆ Ooh, I was not expecting that. It can be frightening to live and breathe another person’s crazy. But when you find out they are not crazy at all - well, that can drive one mad. Lilith Blake is not a real author, Google assured me, and I take comfort in that.
Finally finished: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...And with that this was the final year of Awards August. After years of searching, nothing comes close to Lonesome Dove.
The Dark Tower will be series: https://www.tor.com/2022/12/08/mike-f...Between that and The Merchant of Death being released I’m feeling a little sick today. It’s a struggle between never picking up the news and facing the daily horror.
Maybe a waiting period, like for handgun, before you get issued whatever it is they provide. An adult should be able to make that decision but we all have bad days. So long as it’s initiated by the individual the bureaucracy could be a sieve to weed out the “cry for help/just a bad day” lot.
Wow. I approve of such things being legally available but damn.Dying With Dignity describes the procedure as “driven by compassion, an end to suffering and discrimination and desire for personal autonomy.”
It’s a little chilling to legally say dying is a way to end discrimination and gain autonomy. It’s like something the lord Cthulhu would need you to believe. Just walk into the cold deep and let me be your answer.
So glad you loved Fields of Gold. I want everyone to it! What is this about Canadian plans for euthanasia? Too bad about Resolution, joy of the loaner hardback to me!
