inglades, after watching the whole episode, punched eragon in the chin "i will follow pine." he said "and i will not tolerate such behavior from you"

inglades packed up his gear and took his horse by the reins. "are we ready to depart then?" he asked pine

inglades produced several pieces of hardtack and tossed one to everyone

inglades leaned against a tree, looking pale and weary, but smiling to himself. he had done it! he kept his friends safe while they rested

next morning...

inglades walked up to pine, making almost no noise at all after taking off his metal plate armor. he had to shake her by the shoulder for her to notice he was speaking, so distracted was she by her responsibility "pine, you need to rest" he said with a look of sincere concern "i'll take tonight's watch

"as i said, i'll take first watch" inglades resumed his seat and his sad and haunting song

inglades smiled and patted anubis on the shoulder "this is the past then?"

"i regret having to say this"inglades said with a sigh "but i have no choice but to trust you"

"anubis, i realize that this attack wasn't your choice, and i'm sorry. but you are still dangerous to me at least, and i'm worried about what may happen when we meet your old master" inglades, immediately after he said that, questioned the wisdom of speaking so plainly with one so dangerous

inglades raised his sword and pointed it at anubis "who was your old master?" inglades demanded in a deep voice "you have been less than honest with us, anubis, and but for pine's mercy, i would strike you down"

"as long as i draw breath, no demon will harm you" inglades said loudly, as much to bolster his courage as that of his friends. "paladine would not lead me astray" he said to himself "there must be a way..." his voice dropped to a whisper

inglades walked around the camp, twenty feet into the woods, to secure the area

inglades walked to pine, holding the note from the arrow. "i think you should see this..." he said, his face going pale

inglades stared in amazement at the arrow less than a foot from his head, and pulled it from the tree and examined the note

inglades walked several feet in to the woods, near a clearing, and sat on a log, looking up at the sky. his friends' keen elven ears could barely make out a slow song in a language they didn't recognize

"you need sleep, friends. i can watch for at least half the night, and i'll take the first watch."

inglades rolled his eyes and turned his horse around to follow pine and the strange elf
