Night Hunters ★★★In a cyberpunk future Venezuela, two brothers grow up on opposite sides of the law.
Scout's Honor ★★★★★After a nuclear war, the survivors who emerge from a bunker are Boy Scouts. Now 260 years in the future, the Boy Scouts are badass warriors living by their code of honor protecting those left in the badlands filled with mutated animals and Mad Max types. The story's great. The art is great. Seek this out.
The Serpent and The Dead: A Marvel: Legends of Asgard Novel ★★★★Lady Sif and the original Valkyrie, Brunnhilde, take center stage as they work to uncover a mystery of what's happening to Asgardian souls when they die.
Friday ★★Ed Brubaker's ode to The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew. It's too short though and only gets going when it ends.
Knock Em Dead ★★★Giving new meaning to the phrase, "I'm dying out there", Pryor Brice is a struggling comic until one day he gets in a car wreck and is declared dead for a few minutes. That's when a dead comedian does a ride-along back with Brice and Brice turns his career around.
Bonnie wrote: "I never did get past that learning curve. NG is so easy and EW just frustrates me so I basically gave up."There are a lot of books I'd miss out on if I didn't use EW. These days, I get more from EW than NG.
World Class ★★The Western version of a sports Manga about soccer.
Stars, Hide Your Fire ★★★★Two teenage best friends find a fairy who may be much more dangerous than she first appears.
I Breathed a Body ★Starts off as a diatribe against social media and the power we let influencers have over us. Devolves into some strange story full of body horror and fungal nightmares.
Bacon and Other Monstrous Tales ★★This one is only going to be for Troy Nixey completists. Most of the stories are unfinished. They are the odds and ends of Nixey's career.
Iyanu Child of Wonder Volume One ★★★A tale set in an African fantasy world about a young outcast with special abilities.
Malika: Warrior Queen Volume 1 ★★★A solid, fantasy story with African roots about a warrior queen in the area of Nigeria.
Turns out donating platelets is a great way to catch up on your ARCs.
Infidel ★★★A politically charged haunted house story. Spirits lingering in an apartment building are fueled by hatred and racism.
The Good Asian, Vol. 1 ★★★The detective story gets lost in the need to tell of the racism and injustice Chinese immigrants went through in the 1930's.
Beneath the Trees: The Autumn of Mister Grumph ★★★★A beautiful children's book about Mr. Grumpf. He's always grumpy but also always goes out of his way to help his neighbors as winter approaches.
HAHA ★★Six depressing stories about sad clowns, each by a different artist.
The EC Archives: The Haunt of Fear Volume 1 ★★★Your standard 1950's tales of people murdering people and then getting what they deserve.
Teen Titans: Beast Boy Loves Raven ★★★It's taken 3 books but the series finally seems to be headed somewhere.
Darya Silman wrote: "I downloaded it...the file on my phone does not open, says I have no license. The same on the title: you are not authorized"Right, The publisher didn't give you enough time to actually read it. They approved you the day it expired. I do the same thing Alexander suggested. Leave a 0 rating. It's the publisher's issue for approving you so late in the game.
Darya Silman wrote: "The strange thing happened (or maybe I haven't figured out the details). On Monday, I got my first approval on Edelweiss. When I was downloading a book, I saw the notification that the download wou..."It happens occasionally if the publisher doesn't pay attention. I just leave a review on Edelweiss saying they didn't give me time to download the ARC before it expired.
Dryad, Vol. 1 ★★★★Kurtis Wiebe of Rat Queens fame does his best Saga impression and it turned out really good.
Shadowman: Book One ★★★This was fantastic. It's got this Irish folktale vibe to it with some banging animation influenced art.
The Silver Coin, Vol. 1 ★★This was crap. People in different time periods randomly find a cursed coin, get possessed and kill people. That's the story.
The Last Witch: Fear & Fire ★★★★★This was fantastic. It's got this Irish folktale vibe to it with some banging animation influenced art.
Eighty Days ★★A queer romance set in the backdrop of psuedo World War II.
Outlaw: Relentless: A Marvel Heroines Novel ★★★The little-known Marvel mutant Outlaw gets a prose novel. Pretty solid actually.
White Ash ★★★★★Egad, I loved this. It's about a mining town in Pennsylvania where a mysterious threat from the town's past returns. I don't want to spoil anything else about this one. A great read for Halloween.
Garlic and the Vampire ★★★★★A delightful, all-ages graphic novel about an anthropomorphic garlic bulb that tends a witch's garden along with all the other enchanted fruits and vegetables. When a vampire moves into the nearby abandoned castle, she's elected to confront him.
Honor and Curse Vol. 2: Mended ★★★I liked how the series was based on Japanese folklore and used shinto and tengu but the story was convoluted and difficult to follow.
The Collected Toppi Vol.6: Japan ★★★★★Sergio Toppi was one of the great European comic artists. This collects his short stories set in Japan, mostly based on Japanese folklore.
Crueler Than Dead, Vol.1 ★★Your straight up, standard zombie apocalypse fare. There wasn't much of a story, plot, or characterization.
Abbott: 1973 ★★★★I love the setup for Abbott. Elena Abbott is a black, lesbian reporter for a Black newspaper in 1970's Detroit. She also stumbles into the fact that she's the Lightbringer, with supernatural powers she doesn't really understand.
Crimson Flower ★★A girl sees her father murdered and goes after the assassin 30 years later.
Avatar: The Next Shadow ★★★A solid continuation of Avatar.
Kabuki Omnibus Volume 4 ★★★★★Collects the two miniseries that were about other assassins of the Noh, Kabuki: Masks of the Noh and Kabuki: Scarab, Lost in Translation.
The EC Archives: MD ★★Kudos to Dark Horse for putting all these EC Comics back in print, but there's a reason this only lasted 5 issues.
Steeple ★★★John Allison tries to recreate his Giant Days magic with this new series about a not-so-good female priest and a not-so-bad female Satanist who become besties.
Steeple, Volume 2: The Silvery Moon ★★★Even having Billie the priest from the Church of England become a priestess for the Church of Satan and her cohort Maggie switching back to the Church of England can't liven up this series.
Caught up a bit on the plane yesterday.
Makeda: The Queen of Sheba ★★★★A illustrated storybook about how the Princess of Sheba became the Queen of Sheba based on African folklore.
Sensor ★★★Some of Junki Ito's best art paired with his worst writing.
1000 Storms ★★★A strange story about a girl coming of age who walks in and out of our world into one full of beasties who come here to attack the children.
Alexander wrote: "Steadily working through my backlog.."Your backlog is still my future. My backlog is more of a backtree.
Leonardo 2 ★★A weird sci-fi story about the last humans in the far future cloning Leonardo da Vinci so that he could save them from an alien race out to exterminate mankind.
Backtrack, Vol. 1 ★★★★The Fast and the Furious and Time Travel.
