Self Building
Self-building is the creation of an individual home for oneself through a variety of methods. The self-builder's input into this process varies from doing the actual construction to contracting the work to an architect or building package company.
Reasons for this can be financial or aesthetic. Economic reasons can be due to poverty (inability to afford housing on the open market) through to the desire for a custom design unavailable through conventional builders.
Self-build properties can range from simple shanty buildings to complex architect-designed mansions.
