[close] Banned Literary Dept. is a monthly book club hosted by Briar Road, where we vote on and read thought-provoking, often challenged books that inspire curiosity, dialogue, and foster a diverse community of readers and new perspectives; bridging the worlds of fashion and literature. Through the Banned Literary Dept., we aim to foster a community that champions creative freedom, challenges convention, and advocates for positive change.

[close] This global discussion group has been designed to encourage debates about important and underreported issues of our era. All you need is an enquiring mind and a desire to gain or share “underground knowledge”. This is also a place to discuss the controversial topics explored in The Underground Knowledge Series (non-fiction books) by James Morcan & Lance Morcan as well as the Underground Knowledge podcast show.

[close] Many books that are now deemed as classics were once banned at one point in history. Reading such books now, it often feels preposterous that such books were ever considered controversial. Much can be said about the political climate of the time, by examining the books that have been challenged/banned. The goal of this group is to read and discuss books that have been banned and/or challenged here in the U.S. or abroad. Aside from general discussions, there will be opportunities to participate in group reads/discussions. My goal is to read at least 10 banned books a year (*10% of my annual reading goal). The plan is to select one book a month from the ALA's list of most challenged/banned books to read and discuss as a group. Many, if not most, of these selections will be pulled from recent years.
