The main character, a homicide detective. Deputy Chief of Detectives and in his mid 30s in Along Came a Spider. Has a doctorate in psychology. Works and lives in the ghettos of Washington DC. Smart and observant, hard-working, and black. Has 2 children, Damon and Janelle (Jannie). Nickname: the Dragonslayer. His wife, their mother, Maria, had died in a drive-by shooting just before the start of the series. He has a brother Charles and numerous aunts and other family. He was born in Winston-Salem, NC.
