What Would Jon Snow Read? Book Recs for Your Favorite Game of Thrones Characters
"A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone if it is to keep its edge," Tyrion Lannister told Jon Snow in A Game of Thrones. "That's why I read so much."
Unfortunately for Tyrion—and for all the characters in George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series—the publishing industry in the fantasy land of Westeros leaves a little to be desired. (Unless, of course, you're mostly into historical nonfiction and songs about maidens and/or bears). But what if Game of Thrones characters were on Goodreads today? Which books would they add to their to-read shelves?
Below we've gathered some book recommendation for Tyrion, Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, and more. Now it's your turn!

lol Jon Snow would have existed before aANY of these were published [medieval ages and all. Fictional, but still.]

I'm not going to pick out clever titles that have some connection to the characters; I am going to pick out books that I think the particular character would enjoy, based on what I know about them.Arya Stark would enjoy stories of ass-kicking women. For her:
GRRM has stated that Sansa enjoys romances; (and since he created this character I think HE would know her better than anyone else) I think she would identify with the MC's in these books:
and because she loves clothes:
Sandor "the Hound" Clegane is a complicated and misunderstood character, but from what I know about him I think he would like these books:
(the Cain/Abel brother theme in this book would be fascinating to him)
(as an expert horseman I think he would really enjoy this one)
(a coffee table book full of lovely ladies with red hair)
(because he and John Lydon are so much alike.....the Hound would have made an awesome member of the Sex Pistols)
I think Tyrion would be reading something by Terry Pratchett or Douglas Adams. His wit/humour would fit right in with their material. Throw in some George Carlin for good measure.
Jeffrey wrote: "lol Jon Snow would have existed before aANY of these were published [medieval ages and all. Fictional, but still.]"Well he's not on Earth so I don't think he was in the Middle Ages either.
Those are spot on, especially Dany's "Men Explain Things To Me"! I was prepared to riot about Sansa's selection, but turns out whoever did this list has read the books and knows Sansa is so much more than what people paint her as. The Maya Angelou novel fits her so well, and not because of the funny title nod. If she lived nowadays, she would totally be the kind of young woman who's just learned that "feminism" isn't a bad word and is now truly invested in learning and growing, kuddos to whoever suggested this one for her instead of sticking to romance novels! Tyrion would read more adventure books, though. After all, it's what made him survive his childhood at the Rock, and I agree with Andreas' suggestion of Pratchett :)
The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle “Great heroes need great sorrows and burdens, or half their greatness goes unnoticed. It is all part of the fairy tale.”
Jeffrey wrote: "lol Jon Snow would have existed before aANY of these were published [medieval ages and all. Fictional, but still.]"wow way to take the fun out of everything

Okay, probably some people, but GWTW is truly perfect for Sansa (and my fav).
Andreas wrote: "I think Tyrion would be reading something by Terry Pratchett or Douglas Adams. His wit/humour would fit right in with their material. Throw in some George Carlin for good measure."I think Tyrion might like the Miles Vorkosigan books by Lois McMaster Bujold

Whats eating Gilbert Grape
The Mahabharata

Iron in the soul by sartre

he's not even on a planet as we understand it. GRRM wrote the saga in a universe consisting of a 'flat earth' like the folks here on Earth in the Middle Ages believed it to be.
Holly wrote: "I'm not going to pick out clever titles that have some connection to the characters; I am going to pick out books that I think the particular character would enjoy, based on what I know about them...."superb job on The Hound's recs!! spot on!! 100% with you on the Sex Pistols connection for Sandor!!
I chuckled over Jon Snow's list. Then I saw "Men Explain Things To Me" and I laughed loud enough that I'm pretty sure everyone in the apartments around mine must have heard me.
