12 Books with Plot Twists Even the Queen of Crime Wouldn't Have Seen Coming

Posted by Hayley on September 15, 2016

Agatha Christie was born 126 years ago today! The Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple creator is the best-selling novelist of all time, outsold only by the Bible and Shakespeare, and has kept generations of readers guessing with genre-defining capers like And Then There Were None, Murder on the Orient Express, and Murder at the Vicarage. To celebrate the inimitable Queen of Crime and her love of surprise endings (the reveal in The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is still one of our all-time favorites), we asked you on Facebook and Twitter: What book has the best plot twists? Your top answers—full of enough madness, mayhem, monsters, and murder to make Christie proud—are below. How many of them have you read? Did you guess any of the twists before they happened?

Fight Club

Jane Eyre

Gone Girl

Ender's Game

The Thirteenth Tale

Shutter Island

The Final Empire

We Were Liars

Wayward Pines

Fingersmith

My Sister's Keeper

A Game of Thrones

What book's twists impressed you the most? Titles only, please—no spoilers!

Mohammed Arabey Happy Birthday Agatha :)
Rowling's Cormoran Strike series are really something, specially Book Two and Three..
Gillian Flynn did a great work as well.

I still love "We Were Lair" yet I predict it after 25% of the novel only, yet I really loved it.

AND of course I wish I find something as crazy and unpredictable as "And Then There Were None"

message 52: by Ankit (new)

Ankit Dhakal I have read Christie's "Murder on the Orient Express", "They Came to Baghdad", "Cards on the Table" and "Endless Nights". All of these shocked me in the end.

Thanks, just ordered it. I love his YA series, he's an amazing writer. Hadn't heard of this one, but the cover is swoon-worthy.

Veracious Reads Follow You Home by Mark Edwards - spooky, captivating and the epilogue is *shaking my head* unbelievable!

message 59: by Garrett (new)

Garrett Nicolai I'm very wary of looking at lists of "biggest plot twists". Even the knowledge that a twist exists can dilute the twist. The best twists for me are the ones that I don't see coming; if I know there is a big plot twist, I will inevitably try to predict it, and enjoy the twist less when it occurs. I love a great plot twist, but ironically, can't seek them out.

Cool, let me know what you think. If you like it, I also recommend his City Trilogy books.

The Skeleton Key with Kate Hudson and Peter Sarsgaard is FANTASTIC. One of my all-time favourite movies. Creepy but not mindlessly gory, and with a great twist.

Leila Mota 'And Then There Were None' is so good that I read it again recently, and I couldn't remember who did it and how it was done. Brilliant. I also liked 'Murder on the Orient Express' very much. But there are two other books by Agatha Christie that I love: 'Death Comes as the End', and 'They Came to Baghdad'.

Nine little soldier boys sat up very late
One overslept himself and then there were eight
Eight little soldier boys travelling in Devon
One Said he'd stay there and then there were seven
Seven little soldier boys chopping up sticks
One chopped himself in halves and then there were six
Six little soldier boys playing with a hive
A bumble bee stung one and then there were five
Five little soldier boys going in for law
One got in Chancery and then there were four

Jakub Zahumensky Erin ☕ *Proud Book Hoarder* wrote: "The first Game of Thrones book has a twist? I can't remember one so it can't be that big.."

I guess in a world of scheming and plots it's hard to pinpoint one big one, but I guess the betrayal of Ned Stark by Littlefinger might be considered a plot twist? Even though he warned him not to trust him?

Cosmos Murder on the Orient Express (Hercule Poirot, #10) by Agatha Christie Murder on the Orient Express also had a shocking twist ending that I didn't see coming. One of my all time mystery favorites, this book is full of suspects, but I just was blown away by the conclusion. Christie sure knew how to write them!

Cosmos I've never read Dan Brown's work.

message 88: by Donna (new)

Donna Krebs The Talented Mr. Ripley and Gone Girl had very surprising twists and endings!

message 89: by Cosmos (new)

Cosmos Gone Girl had too much explicit sex for my taste, Donna. But I agree with you on the Ripley book. Lots of twists and surprise endings in that one.

Maria Hill AKA MH Books Cosmos wrote: "Gone Girl had too much explicit sex for my taste, Donna. But I agree with you on the Ripley book. Lots of twists and surprise endings in that one."

Yes, the end of Gone Girl was spoiled a bit for me as I had already seen the Film. I have no recollection of the sex scenes, though. This goes to show that I am not particularly sensitive on the subject. This is probably unsurprising as I have been reading books from the Adults Library (rather than the children's Library, which was too easy) since I was about 12.

bookstories_travels🪐 The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is my favorite Agatha Christie´s book ,today still amazes with the final. But Gone girl is a good twist book too, but Game of Thrones, are so amazing. Jane Eyre is a especial book for me, i love so much, but i don´t think that it be a twist plot really.
