12 Books with Plot Twists Even the Queen of Crime Wouldn't Have Seen Coming

Posted by Hayley on September 15, 2016

Agatha Christie was born 126 years ago today! The Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple creator is the best-selling novelist of all time, outsold only by the Bible and Shakespeare, and has kept generations of readers guessing with genre-defining capers like And Then There Were None, Murder on the Orient Express, and Murder at the Vicarage. To celebrate the inimitable Queen of Crime and her love of surprise endings (the reveal in The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is still one of our all-time favorites), we asked you on Facebook and Twitter: What book has the best plot twists? Your top answers—full of enough madness, mayhem, monsters, and murder to make Christie proud—are below. How many of them have you read? Did you guess any of the twists before they happened?

Fight Club

Jane Eyre

Gone Girl

Ender's Game

The Thirteenth Tale

Shutter Island

The Final Empire

We Were Liars

Wayward Pines

Fingersmith

My Sister's Keeper

A Game of Thrones

message 120: by Cosmos (new)

Cosmos Kiss the Girls by James Patterson.

message 121: by Justin (new)

Justin Heard The Light Bringer series by Brent Weeks. Lots of them in The Blinding Knife which is book two, but the plot twist a third of the way through the first book makes the series.

Also The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson. The second book currently has the most, but wow!

Steven, I had no idea how many books were named "Skeleton Key". Oh my goodness! The reason I didn't remember the author is because the book doesn't list on. The movie came out so of course they made a book from it. I read the book before seeing the movie.

The book is featured by Universal Studios. The cover shows Kate Hudson holding a key while there seems to be fire all around her. The ISBN # for the book is: 1417018543
I hope this helps, cause it's a great book.

message 123: by Cosmos (new)

Cosmos Skeleton Key is an awesome movie with a great twist ending.

Weird, I can't find mention of the book anywhere. I even tried googling the ISBN...

message 125: by Cosmos (new)

Cosmos I can't find it either, Nitzan. Usually I can find all books on goodreads. The Skeleton Key (Sigma Force, #6.5) by James Rollins The Skeleton Key. Is this the one?

Kay Dee (what is your storygraph name? mine is in my bio. join me!) Meadows Cosmos wrote: "I can't find it either, Nitzan. Usually I can find all books on goodreads. The Skeleton Key (Sigma Force, #6.5) by James RollinsThe Skeleton Key. Is this the one?"

the movie was written by Ehren Kruger. I don't see anywhere where it says it was based off a book. also the plot seems very different.

message 127: by Cosmos (new)

Cosmos Well then I can't find the book at all.

message 128: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Susan wrote: "No one mentioned Code Name Verity?"

Oh god, that one completely shocked me. And I was reading it on a bus with a bunch of my classmates going to Milan (I was on exchange) and I was sobbing at the ending.

message 129: by MRNJ (new)

MRNJ The Red Queen had a twist that I didn't see coming. But then afterward I felt stupid and that I should have seen it coming.

message 130: by MRNJ (new)

MRNJ The Red Queen had a twist that I did not see coming. Although afterwards, I felt stupid that I didn't see it coming. So I am not saying it is the most shocking. Others probably figured it out beforehand. I often do that, but not this time.
