Did You Notice Something a Little Different?
UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! For those of you who were having issues with blurriness, we have good news: we pushed out an update this afternoon that improves the sharpness of the font for users who were affected. We’re monitoring all the comments and will keep you posted on any further updates.
If you’re a frequent visitor to Goodreads, you've probably noticed a few tweaks we’ve made to the fonts and colors on the desktop site today. Our goal with these small-but-important changes was to consolidate and refresh our visual styles and lay the groundwork for some design improvements that we’re planning in the future.
What’s different?
To enhance the readability of text on Goodreads, we’ve adopted two new open-source fonts. Lato, our sans-serif font, was designed by Warsaw-based designer Łukasz Dziedzic (“Lato” means “Summer” in Polish). Merriweather, our serif font, was created by Eben Sorkin and was designed to be pleasant to read on screens.
To make it easier to scan the page for information you need, we’ve touched up and modernized the design of common page layout elements like section headers, tabs and links.
To simplify and modernize our visual design, we’ve reduced the number of link colors we use, removed gradients from buttons and the site navigation, and applied a more harmonious color palette to interactive elements such as buttons, stars, and links.

Soooo.. Speaking as a significantly visually impaired user (visual acuity 20:150 at best), this is not better. Really, it's not. The fonts are smaller, the colours are distracting and harder to read, and the headers have less definition. In the name of accessibility I think you've made some wrong choices here.

Thank you for the screenshots! We're fixing an issue with the font rendering that makes it appear differently on different devices and browsers. I'll post here when it should be fixed.
I like the two fonts, but you need to remember that there's a lot of people with bad eyesight for various reasons. You'd be better off raising the font size on both of them. Body text should be a minimum 16-18px, or it is going to be hard to read.
Tytti wrote: "The font makes the text more difficult to read. I have to guess some letters."I feel the same. It's harder to read!
Hate the font choice. It looks as if the page has been typed on a typewriter when it's running out of ribbon/ink... not a good change guys. I also don't really like the changes to the mobile look and feel either.
Rollback please. The font is pretty but I don't think you have improved readability AT ALL. I have to zoom up in my tablet.
I've managed to read exactly 29 comments in this thread and already I can't see a thing. Please give the option to keep old fonts. This is terrible.
Personally, I find it harder to read. Everything seems kind of blurry now. I definitely preferred the old design...
I like the fonts. However, the new green is colder, and I associate it with a hospital. Can you use a warmer hue?

So this means they are going to just ignore us?
Also, the contrast (or lack thereof) for the new font is murdering readability for me. Since this is a website with a lot of reading implied (that being, well, the point of it all), contrast on the body text is essential.
The font I'm seeing doesn't look like the previews on the pages you linked to. I am finding it really difficult to read after just a few minutes, but the samples don't look so bad... weird.
The font is better, but I preferred the shaded headings. It made them stand out more and easier to spot the section you were looking for.
The font style is now better, but still too small and thin to read. Thanks for listening to us, but rolling back and coming up with a poll is probably the best option so far, imo.
Well now I'm in genuine physical pain from trying to read half a paragraph, so thanks for that I guess.
My eyes are having a hard time reading this new font. I feel like I'm going crosseyed trying to read eveything.
Wow my eyes hurt. The font is so pale and thin, it's difficult to read. Please give us the option to switch it back!!
These new fonts are bad. The main page font is much worse than the thread font (e's do not look like e's, they look like c's). The teal-ish green font color is harder to read. (The lower case T's as I'm writing this comment look like weird l's which is making me wonder if I'm having typos.)Not a fan, please return the old fonts.
Please allow us some way to change the font back. It is very unpleasant to try to read any of the text now.
So I can read this....if I'm like 10 feet away from my desk. Seriously. This is just ridiculous. I am on Goodreads ALL THE TIME. This is just painful.
Okay, so now it's a little better. But only A TINY LITTLE BIT.
Crossbars are still missing (t f A).
Letters are still blurry and glitchy.
And the bold type letters are running onto each other.
AND IT'S STILL GIVING ME A HEADACHE
AND WHY ON GODS GREEN EARTH DID YOU REMOVE THE BORDERS?
It's a pretty design but have to scroll up to 125 percent for it to be readable (and not all ugly and blurred) on my machine. Have tried in Firefox and Chrome, Chrome is definitely worse, but Firefox is still awful. The old design was clear and easy to read at any size. Your font rendering DEFINITELY needs work.

Well said!!!
I'm having to squint to read which is obviously not good. You should've spent your time giving us half stars instead of some crap font that hurts to read.
"To enhance the readability of text on Goodreads, we’ve adopted two new open-source fonts... and applied a more harmonious color palette" ?? Hilarious! The text looks broken, it's hard to read and the colors are far worse than the original ones. Please return to the previous version.
Why, instead of these unfortunate cosmetic changes, can't you do something that would please most of us -- give half stars!!
I like the new layout. Though I can see how the new font can be hard to read for some, I'm not having any troubles. I like the hunter green.
I tried it in different browsers, the font looks the same in every one of them. It's interesting because the readability of the comments here is fine, but when I go to my Profile page, the font gets mushy, soft and very hard to read.
The layout is fine, the font needs adjusting.
Please do allow to change the font to the previous one, this one is difficult to read and hurts my eyes. Please!
I don't mind the link colour change although it's a bit much on the Discussions home page. Too much of the same colour making it hard to read. I agree with the other comments made about the font size - it's way too small that i have to strain to see it. Font size/style is especially bad when writing in a comment box. Reviews look better with a border around them. I spend a lot of time on GR as I am a moderator of a group and these font changes are going to ruin my eyes. I'm all up for making changes if something isn't working or to give it a fresh image but those changes have to improve a site's functionality not limit it.
I have an astigmatism. I can't read the font on the e-mail page at all without glasses. I don't usually follow any blogs with light gray lettering. It is all but invisible even with my glasses. The bluegreen letters also look very pale and difficult without them. The space between words is too small. The space between sentences should be three times as much. Why are some thumbnails even smaller? There is lettering in places in the site that has been needlessly downsized. It slows me down to see see so many different fonts and sizes.
i don't love the serif font the letters look almost fadedthe sans serif font is just too small for me to read
I find it very difficult to read. I have increased the size of the font in my browser and I'm still having difficulty reading it. I realize I'm over 40 and wear reading glasses, so my vision is not perfect, but I shouldn't have to strain to read basic messages like this (while wearing my reading glasses). I've never had this much difficulty reading pages in my browser - on any website.
It's really...really awful. If I lose my eyesight because you have contrast differentiating issues along with strange taste in font, I'm footing you the bill, m'kay? Well, what would be a welcome change, you ask? The half star rating. It's literally all we wanted, change-wise.
Season's greetings!
I'm using Chrome and think it looks fine, but I can see where some may have a hard time reading some items. I do think the font looks more updated and cleaner but as for better readability I think you missed the mark.I would have preferred an update to the Android app ;)
The new color for the rating stars seems pale; my eyes slip over them as I'm scanning. There also seems to be a lot more white space, which makes it harder to differentiate between the sections of each page, and the text looks smaller. (My bookshelves look so cramped and lonely!) The overall layout looks nice and clean, though. It'll just take a little getting used to.
