Did You Notice Something a Little Different?

Posted by Maryana Pinchuk on December 15, 2015
UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! For those of you who were having issues with blurriness, we have good news: we pushed out an update this afternoon that improves the sharpness of the font for users who were affected. We’re monitoring all the comments and will keep you posted on any further updates.

If you’re a frequent visitor to Goodreads, you've probably noticed a few tweaks we’ve made to the fonts and colors on the desktop site today. Our goal with these small-but-important changes was to consolidate and refresh our visual styles and lay the groundwork for some design improvements that we’re planning in the future.

What’s different?

  • To enhance the readability of text on Goodreads, we’ve adopted two new open-source fonts. Lato, our sans-serif font, was designed by Warsaw-based designer Łukasz Dziedzic (“Lato” means “Summer” in Polish). Merriweather, our serif font, was created by Eben Sorkin and was designed to be pleasant to read on screens.

  • To make it easier to scan the page for information you need, we’ve touched up and modernized the design of common page layout elements like section headers, tabs and links.

  • To simplify and modernize our visual design, we’ve reduced the number of link colors we use, removed gradients from buttons and the site navigation, and applied a more harmonious color palette to interactive elements such as buttons, stars, and links.
  • Before:

    After:

Our approach was simple: Improve the usability of the site and give it a cleaner, more modern look, while preserving the familiar feel of Goodreads—a unique home for readers.

Let us know what you think!

Genia Lukin Soooo.. Speaking as a significantly visually impaired user (visual acuity 20:150 at best), this is not better. Really, it's not. The fonts are smaller, the colours are distracting and harder to read, and the headers have less definition. In the name of accessibility I think you've made some wrong choices here.

Thank you for the screenshots! We're fixing an issue with the font rendering that makes it appear differently on different devices and browsers. I'll post here when it should be fixed.

    message 653: by Antonius (new)

Antonius Hogebrandt I like the two fonts, but you need to remember that there's a lot of people with bad eyesight for various reasons.

You'd be better off raising the font size on both of them. Body text should be a minimum 16-18px, or it is going to be hard to read.

    message 654: by Teresa (new)

Teresa Tytti wrote: "The font makes the text more difficult to read. I have to guess some letters."

I feel the same. It's harder to read!

    message 655: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I find the new font and colors very hard to read without putting my nose close to the screen.

    message 656: by M'rella (new)

M'rella Did the font just change again? Or is it me tweaking the font settings in my browser?

⚜️Flavia❄️ WTF...the font is awful. I USE glasses and this font is blurry and kills me.

    message 658: by Mirrordance (new)

Mirrordance New fonts are not so comfortable for eyesight

    message 659: by Lynxie (new)

Lynxie Hate the font choice. It looks as if the page has been typed on a typewriter when it's running out of ribbon/ink... not a good change guys.

I also don't really like the changes to the mobile look and feel either.

    message 660: by James (new)

James Sux. Can't see the bars on 'f's and 't's without embiggening. Hard to read. If it ain't broke...

    message 661: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Rollback please. The font is pretty but I don't think you have improved readability AT ALL. I have to zoom up in my tablet.

    message 662: by Knjigoholičarka (new)

Knjigoholičarka I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking that this new font is almost unreadable.

    message 663: by the_cat (new)

the_cat I've managed to read exactly 29 comments in this thread and already I can't see a thing. Please give the option to keep old fonts. This is terrible.

    message 664: by WendyB (new)

WendyB Other than a slightly different looking font, I don't notice much difference. I'm not kidding.

    message 665: by Annie (new)

Annie Personally, I find it harder to read. Everything seems kind of blurry now. I definitely preferred the old design...

    message 666: by Kalin (new)

Kalin I like the fonts. However, the new green is colder, and I associate it with a hospital. Can you use a warmer hue?

Jane Bjorn wrote: "O wrote: "Wow. So no testing :-( "

Professional experience: When you've already paid your consultants for the change, you don't want to be told there's something wrong with it."

So this means they are going to just ignore us?

    message 668: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Barton Sasser I have tried all main browsers for desktop use - HARD TO READ ON ALL

    message 669: by Genia (new)

Genia Lukin Also, the contrast (or lack thereof) for the new font is murdering readability for me. Since this is a website with a lot of reading implied (that being, well, the point of it all), contrast on the body text is essential.

    message 670: by Allison (new)

Allison The font I'm seeing doesn't look like the previews on the pages you linked to. I am finding it really difficult to read after just a few minutes, but the samples don't look so bad... weird.

    message 671: by ♥ Rebecca ♥ (new)

♥ Rebecca ♥ The font is better, but I preferred the shaded headings. It made them stand out more and easier to spot the section you were looking for.

message 672: by Jorge (last edited Dec 15, 2015 12:41PM) (new)

Jorge Really liking the new design, much cleaner. Great job guys :)

    message 673: by M'rella (new)

M'rella The font style is now better, but still too small and thin to read.
Thanks for listening to us, but rolling back and coming up with a poll is probably the best option so far, imo.

    message 674: by Windypicnic (new)

Windypicnic Well now I'm in genuine physical pain from trying to read half a paragraph, so thanks for that I guess.

    message 675: by Brittany (new)

Brittany My eyes are having a hard time reading this new font. I feel like I'm going crosseyed trying to read eveything.

    message 676: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey Wow my eyes hurt. The font is so pale and thin, it's difficult to read. Please give us the option to switch it back!!

    message 677: by L. (new)

    L. Is there a way to go back to the old font? This one is making my eyes hurt.

    message 678: by Myst (new)

Myst These new fonts are bad. The main page font is much worse than the thread font (e's do not look like e's, they look like c's). The teal-ish green font color is harder to read. (The lower case T's as I'm writing this comment look like weird l's which is making me wonder if I'm having typos.)

Not a fan, please return the old fonts.

    message 679: by ♥ Rebecca ♥ (new)

♥ Rebecca ♥ It is a bit pale, yes.

    message 680: by Nin (new)

Nin Please allow us some way to change the font back. It is very unpleasant to try to read any of the text now.

    message 681: by Lupe (new)

Lupe Dominguez So I can read this....if I'm like 10 feet away from my desk. Seriously. This is just ridiculous. I am on Goodreads ALL THE TIME. This is just painful.

message 682: by Stas (last edited Dec 15, 2015 12:48PM) (new)

Stas Okay, so now it's a little better.
But only A TINY LITTLE BIT.
    Crossbars are still missing (t f A).
Letters are still blurry and glitchy.
And the bold type letters are running onto each other.

AND IT'S STILL GIVING ME A HEADACHE

AND WHY ON GODS GREEN EARTH DID YOU REMOVE THE BORDERS?

    message 683: by Marianne (new)

Marianne It's a pretty design but have to scroll up to 125 percent for it to be readable (and not all ugly and blurred) on my machine. Have tried in Firefox and Chrome, Chrome is definitely worse, but Firefox is still awful. The old design was clear and easy to read at any size. Your font rendering DEFINITELY needs work.

    message 684: by Mirrordance (new)

    Mirrordance Vanessa wrote:

It's not about being a hater.

    Well said!!!

    message 685: by Connor (new)

Connor I'm having to squint to read which is obviously not good. You should've spent your time giving us half stars instead of some crap font that hurts to read.

    message 686: by Ovidiu (new)

Ovidiu Ursa "To enhance the readability of text on Goodreads, we’ve adopted two new open-source fonts... and applied a more harmonious color palette" ?? Hilarious! The text looks broken, it's hard to read and the colors are far worse than the original ones. Please return to the previous version.

    message 687: by Jane (new)

Jane Why, instead of these unfortunate cosmetic changes, can't you do something that would please most of us -- give half stars!!

    message 688: by kisha (new)

kisha I like the new layout. Though I can see how the new font can be hard to read for some, I'm not having any troubles. I like the hunter green.

message 689: by Rynn Yumako (new)

Rynn Yumako I tried it in different browsers, the font looks the same in every one of them.

It's interesting because the readability of the comments here is fine, but when I go to my Profile page, the font gets mushy, soft and very hard to read.

The layout is fine, the font needs adjusting.

    message 690: by A.Vesper (new)

A.Vesper Please do allow to change the font to the previous one, this one is difficult to read and hurts my eyes. Please!

    message 691: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I don't mind the link colour change although it's a bit much on the Discussions home page. Too much of the same colour making it hard to read. I agree with the other comments made about the font size - it's way too small that i have to strain to see it. Font size/style is especially bad when writing in a comment box. Reviews look better with a border around them. I spend a lot of time on GR as I am a moderator of a group and these font changes are going to ruin my eyes. I'm all up for making changes if something isn't working or to give it a fresh image but those changes have to improve a site's functionality not limit it.

    message 692: by Doug (new)

Doug I have an astigmatism. I can't read the font on the e-mail page at all without glasses. I don't usually follow any blogs with light gray lettering. It is all but invisible even with my glasses. The bluegreen letters also look very pale and difficult without them. The space between words is too small. The space between sentences should be three times as much. Why are some thumbnails even smaller? There is lettering in places in the site that has been needlessly downsized. It slows me down to see see so many different fonts and sizes.

    message 693: by harlie (new)

harlie Don't fix what is not broken

    message 694: by Brittany (new)

Brittany i don't love the serif font the letters look almost faded

the sans serif font is just too small for me to read

message 695: by Kelly Brigid ♡ (new)

Kelly Brigid ♡ Er, everything looks too zoomed in!

    message 696: by Toni (new)

Toni I find it very difficult to read. I have increased the size of the font in my browser and I'm still having difficulty reading it. I realize I'm over 40 and wear reading glasses, so my vision is not perfect, but I shouldn't have to strain to read basic messages like this (while wearing my reading glasses). I've never had this much difficulty reading pages in my browser - on any website.

    message 697: by Marko (new)

Marko It's really...really awful. If I lose my eyesight because you have contrast differentiating issues along with strange taste in font, I'm footing you the bill, m'kay?

Well, what would be a welcome change, you ask? The half star rating. It's literally all we wanted, change-wise.

    Season's greetings!

message 698: by Lindsay (last edited Dec 15, 2015 12:49PM) (new)

Lindsay I'm using Chrome and think it looks fine, but I can see where some may have a hard time reading some items. I do think the font looks more updated and cleaner but as for better readability I think you missed the mark.

I would have preferred an update to the Android app ;)

    message 699: by Lissette (new)

Lissette The new color for the rating stars seems pale; my eyes slip over them as I'm scanning. There also seems to be a lot more white space, which makes it harder to differentiate between the sections of each page, and the text looks smaller. (My bookshelves look so cramped and lonely!)

The overall layout looks nice and clean, though. It'll just take a little getting used to.

    message 700: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Edwards Not a fan at all, very hard to read, it's blured like trying to read without my glasses and I've just had new ones. NO NO NO.
