Some of these series I have not even heard of and others including the Stephanie plum series I just do not wish to continue. I hope to catch on and hopefully finish some of these series next year. I only have one more book left in the girl with dragon tattoo series. I still have to finish the first three books in the game of thrones series. There is too much to read and not enough time. That is why I have not started any new series because I want to be dedicated to it.

T.E. wrote: "I would suggest Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel's Legacy series and Michelle West Sun Sword & House Wars series."ABSOLUTELY! I'd add Anne McCaffrey's Harperhall Trilogy and her Dragonriders of Pern books as well. And don't forget Anne Bishop's Black Jewels series.
Not only that, but where are the authors of color on this list? Many of them write series books, like Walter Mosley's Easy Rawlins books. That's why I hate booklists. They tend to be not be very inclusive and the readers are.
This list is 100% incomplete without Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series. Such a beautiful, wonderful historical fiction/sci-fi/romance/etc. series!
Stephanie wrote: "How is Diana Gabaldons Outlander series not listed here?! Best series EVER."Completely agree!
I love Wings of Fire by Tui T. Sutherland. There are no other stronger words to express it other than amazing, incredible, and dragons.
i would point out, one of the qualifiers for the list was "The following all have highly anticipated books on the way" - as much as I love Diana Gabaldon, she doesn't have another book coming out for at least a couple of yearsI would guess the picks were based on number of people who shelved the new books in the series as to-read
from the list my favorite is millenium series...and also i love the Court Gentry series by Mark Greaney...
I agree with the reader who said the Song of ice and Fire series is impossible. Too much rape, very little plot progression and horrible pacing. Good series you might like to check out in its stead are the Merrily Watkins series by Phil Rickman
The Stormlight Archive and Mistworld novels by Brandon Sanderson
The Raj Quartet by Paul Scott
The Miles Vorkosigan Saga by Lois Mc Master Bujold
Any Quadrilogy by Tad Williams
The Sandman Slim Series by Richard Kadrey
The Discworld series by Terry Pratchett
The Malazan Book of the fallen by Steven Erikson (though its not for everyone and I havent gotten past book 1)
The Magician's Trilogy by Lev Grossmann
The Dark Tower Series by Stephen King
The Bartimaeus trilogy by Jonathan Stroud
The Engineer Trilogy by K.J. Parker
I have nothing against ASOIAF, in fact I really liked the first three books, upto a point. However I am tired of the series being touted as the definite fantasy. There are others who do even Grim dark much better than George martin, in fact they play attention to plot and character development. Martin has no idea whjere hes going and for those planning to read the books i would suggest you stick with the AMazing HBO adaptation - Its fast, witty and well made. Its also done a better job than Martin himself of translating his vision onto the screen.
The only non fantasy quadrilogy in my list is the Raj Quartet. This is a wonderful ad serious work, touching upon issues of identity and colonialism. IF anyone has the time and patient they must try it out, it a less well known but sublime work.
As for all the other recommendations, they are fantasy (becayse fantasy and science fiction lend themselves to series a lot easier than literature).
I put the Phil Rickman books first because I would love it if all of you could try just one book from the MErrily Watkins series - The mysteries are all tinged with the paranormal and the Characters are wonderful. One of the best detective series I have ever read...and I have read quite a few.
I could go on, but I think Im already over effusive :-) Try my recommendations, i guarantee you wont be disappointed!!!
My all-time favourite series are Harry Potter by JK Rowling, Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead (why hasn't anybody mentioned this gorgeous series!?!?), its spin-off Bloodlines series, Penryn and the End of Days series by Susan Ee, Gallagher Academy series by Ally Carter, Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer, Covenant series and Lux series by Jennifer L. Armentrout, Too Far series (a part of the Rosemary Beach series that stands well on its own) by Abbi Glines, to name just a few...
Dee wrote: "i would point out, one of the qualifiers for the list was "The following all have highly anticipated books on the way"Seems a lot of people skip the actual articles and just look at the lists within.
Ilona Andrews are releasing their urban fantasy Kate Daniel's series #8, Magic Shifts. It's coming out in August.I'm a little surprised that they're not on this list as they've often ended up on Goodreads end of year choice awards.
I'm also surprised that Stephanie Plum series is on there. It's well known the series is now stagnant and the author lazily reuses plots from previous books.
A lot of readers hope each release will be the final book of the series, not a continuation.
I've just finished book 2 in The Song Of Ice And Fire series. Not the best choice to start off with high fantasy, but going with it all the same. My favourite series growing up was Harry Potter though, a Series Of Unfortunate Events is also a great read for younger readers, or for adults wanting a quick and easy read.
The Tudor series sounds very interesting, I think I'm gonna give it a go soon :) Recently, I really enjoyed the Thursday Next books and A Song of Ice and Fire. I'm looking for something similar - a series with great characters, thrilling stories, and I don't mind complex connections, so The Dagger and The Coin might be the right choice?
I'm rather enjoying The Chronicles of St. Marys at the moment. It doesn't really fit into any category easily (which might be why it's so easily overlooked), but definitely not YA. Five books published so far (plus some short stories), with No.6 due at the end of August - I keep recommending them as they are worth getting your teeth into.

Thank you for that, I couldn't remember for sure if it was 7 or 8!
A friend of mine is reading the 5th wave series and loves it, so I can't wait to check those books out. I love Philippa Gregory books, I'm always checking to see what she has out.
Stephanie wrote: "How is Diana Gabaldons Outlander series not listed here?! Best series EVER."Currently working on this one. I've located the first two books and actually paid real money for them - a rarity for me, but a testament to the quality.

For fans of the Warriors cat series, I would also recommend The Guardian Herd series. Still on book 2, but already great.
And Rangers Apprentice series is pretty good so far. A bit predictable, but it is for kids, so, yeah.

I'm on the third book in this series right now... and actually loving it. Kate's a grown up with a cocky sense of herself, and enough 80's child to keep me associating with her.

I found the Flavia de Luce series to be quite disappointing.

Frani wrote: "Has anyone read the "Flavia de Luce" series by Alan Bradley? The first one in the series is "The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie"."
This is my all-time favorite series -- I want to adopt Flavia and take her away from her uncaring family and the wretched boarding school in Canada...but then there would be no more stories. Keep writing for Flavia, please, Mr. Bradley!

Poor girl, stuck in the '80's...
And I truly loved the Mitford series, and continue to worry about Father Tim's health, as though he were a "real" friend. Thanks for mentioning these 2 series, Virginia.
C.C. wrote: "I'd add the Gabriel Allon thriller series by Daniel Silva, and the "All Creatures Great and Small" series by James Herriot."Agree that Herriot did a good thing when he wrote "All Creatures..."
For excitement I, too enjoy the Silva series of Allon thrillers, but mostly for the continuing characters and places; for me the plot is secondary.
Marjorie wrote: "I really enjoy the series by J.A. Jance, hard to find though, I just keep searching thrift stores."Marjorie, do you shop Amazon for used books? I just checked Jance, and there are several being offered for $.01 -- I love my penny purchases, really the only way I buy books!

Generally referred to as science fiction, I like that a blurb I once read called it "a classic of speculative fiction." That has stuck in my head and puts it in a class by itself.
BTW, that is a really great list you posted!!
Some favorite series:Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series
Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan series
Patrick Weekes's Rogues of the Republic series
Steven Brust's Vlad Taltos series
Naomi Novik's Temeraire series
Seanan McGuire's October Daye and InCryptid series

Jim Butcher's 'Dresden Files' or 'the Codex Alera' series are always a good choice for catching up on reading.
Anastasia wrote: "Jim Butcher's 'Dresden Files' or 'the Codex Alera' series are always a good choice for catching up on reading."Oh yes Dresden files, Haven't started Codex Alera but want to.
I really enjoyed the "World of Watches"-series by Sergei Lukianenko. Also the "Women of the Otherworld" series by Kelley Armstrong is great for female supernatural protagonists.

Her Lux series and the Covenant series are definitely one of my favourites!
For those who like: paranormal, romance, greek mythology (covenant series), swoon-worthy book boyfriends, strong-sarcastic female leads and tons of humour with amazing and serious storylines.
