Meet Our Updated iOS App!

Posted by Libby on September 24, 2014
This is a major update to our Goodreads iPhone and iPad app’s design and navigation. The apps are now iOS 8-ready, and feature a beautifully redesigned newsfeed and streamlined navigation to help you discover great books and share your reading with friends.

Download the updated app from the iTunes App Store to check out all the new features, and tell us what you think!

For our Android-loving members, we promise that we have not forgotten you! The team is working on an update. We know it’s been a long wait, so thank you for your patience. It’s coming!

Lorcan Doyle Any sign of a Windows Phone App?

message 2: by Zeeshan (new)

Zeeshan Mahmood Waiting for Android app!!!!

message 3: by Manuela (new)

Manuela I guess you have forgotten the Windows phone members instead, considering you don't mention us at all.

message 4: by Lesley (new)

Lesley Is anyone else having problems with the new app? In place of a home page I am only getting and Error Getting Updates message followed by
"An unexpected error occurred. It may be that the Goodreads servers are over capacity: please try again in a bit. You may also try to sign out and sign back in (or force-close and relaunch the app) to refresh your user session." Tap to reload

I have tried all of those options several times. In fact I am not able to sign out and back in without deleting the app and reloading it - there is no sign out/in option available otherwise!

I used to use the Goodreads app on my iPad a lot. Please is there a way I can have the old one back because it worked.

Richard Eyres Used on iPad:
Looks nice, haven't seen much difference except the homepage (which now forces me to use the more button to now get the Groups pages).
When trying to view the groups - i am just presented with a loading screen. Hopefully just teething problems, but this day and age, i expect software to be tested before being released.

message 6: by Matt (new)

Matt Much of the UI & UX is still shoddy, guys. Nice step, but not there entirely.

I'm getting this same error. The other screens work, but that home screen with the friends' status updates constantly gets this error.

To sign out, go to "more" in the lower right, then "settings" at the bottom. You'll see where you can sign out then.

ETA: After typing this, the home page started to work for me.

Tess Manuela wrote: "I guess you have forgotten the Windows phone members instead, considering you don't mention us at all."

Please don't forget us Windows Phone users!

message 15: by Mukesh (new)

Mukesh Kumar Now this is injustice. Dear GR people, please release atleast a beta Windows phone app before updating it on any other platform. Are the Windows phone users totally insignificant among your regular users ? I highly doubt that.

Inge Glad to hear you're working on the Android app update as well! The current edition has a lot of issues. The new lay-out looks great.

Ally || the Inkblot || Can't wait for the android update...

message 29: by Canavan (last edited Sep 24, 2014 08:33AM) (new)

Canavan Hmmm. Doesn't even launch correctly. Not exactly the "beautifully redesigned" app the Goodreads team is touting.

message 30: by Aneilea (new)

Aneilea Can't wait to get my ipad.

message 31: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Dingman Really ready for an update of the android app! Great for the basics, but is really lacking past that. I would guess it is 3-4 'updates" behind the iOS app!

message 32: by Tess (new)

Tess Matthias wrote: "Wating for a Windows Phone app as well. Be kind to the underdog."

I know! Please please please give us apps! Windows Phone users love books too!

message 33: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Dingman Alsha the Inkblot wrote: "Can't wait for the android update..."

More like the 3-4 updates we are behind! I just want to be able to click on things on my "feed" and go to them not be re routed to the home page! Also, to see my reading challenge as well.

message 34: by Angie (new)

Angie Any chance an entire site redesign is in the works? While I do use my iPhone to keep track of my reading when I'm not at home, I prefer to browse on my laptop. This site needs some modernization.

We are small but we are Mighty! Books are important to the underdog too!

message 39: by AndrewP (new)

AndrewP Looks a bit better, unfortunately it errors out getting updates so it's no better than the previous release. I will stick with the web browser.

Emily Ella's Gran wrote: "I have tried all of those options several times. In fact I am not able to sign out and back in without deleting the app and reloading it - there is no sign out/in option available otherwise! "

Hey there - are you still having trouble getting the updates to load on the home page? To sign out, first tap the More button on the bottom right-hand side of the screen, then tap Settings when the gray menu appears. You should see the Sign Out option there. Let me know if signing in and out doesn't help.

I'll definitely let our development team know about this. Have you tried signing in and out to see if that makes any difference?

Hey Richard - you should be able to view all of your groups there. Are you still having trouble with the page? Have you tried reloading it (that is, simply going to the gray menu and tapping "Groups" again)?

We're planning on redesigning some of our pages next year (like the book page). If you have any feedback on what you'd like to see, please let us know!

I second that.. we need a Windows app.. and i love the iOS app new look.. it was about time! I hope you add the ability to browse and comment on a friends profile next.. seems lacking in that department..

Emily Nicola wrote: "Looks good!

Unfortunately, this isn't included in the current app. Great to know that you'd like to see this, though!

I'm having the issues with the error message again. Looks like it's not every time, but more often than not.

And this is only on the home screen? We will definitely have someone look at this ASAP.

Which iOS are you running? Have you tried visiting the app store and looking on the Updates tab?

Yes. The other screens seem fine.

Felicia (Ferishia) I have an "Error Getting Updates" message when I try to go to Home. I've deleted and redownloaded it. I'm using the IOS version for my iPhone 5. What's the deal?
