Easily Add Books You Purchased from Amazon to Your Goodreads Shelves! (Available for members in the U.S., Canada, and Australia)

Posted by Suzanne on April 15, 2014

Our members have been asking for a long time for a quick way to add their Amazon book purchases to their Goodreads shelves. So, we’ve come up with a new way to help: Today, we’re starting to roll out an Add Your Amazon Books feature! You can now add books you’ve purchased on Amazon – both print and Kindle books – to your Goodreads shelves. This will be available in the next few weeks to members in the U.S., Canada, and Australia.

Why add your Amazon purchases?

  • Building out your bookshelves means that more of your friends will know about your favorite books.
  • More books added to your Goodreads shelves means better recommendations to help you find more great books to read. The super-smart algorithm powering our recommendations engine analyzes the books you rate to come up with the best book suggestions for your unique reading tastes.
  • Do you remember every book you’ve read? This is a quick way to add more of those elusive books from your past to your Goodreads shelves—as well as books you’ve bought and are planning to read. Never forget a book again!

How do you know if you have the feature? You’ll see the Add Amazon Book Purchases link in the Tools list on the left hand side of the My Books page (and a small announcement at the top of the page). Click on either link and you’ll be asked to sign in to your Amazon account. You’ll then see your Amazon book purchases. You can go through and rate each book and select the appropriate shelf for it. We give you full control over which books to add so you can avoid adding any books bought as gifts. Any book not rated or added to a shelf will not be added to Goodreads.

Can’t wait to get started? If you are in the U.S., Canada, or Australia, you can get early access to the Add Your Amazon Books option by clicking this link:

Add Your Amazon Books

It's fun to scroll through years and years of book purchases. You just might come across a book you loved but then forgot--it’s like seeing a long-lost friend!

Members in the U.S., Canada, and Australia can also use the Add Your Amazon Books option on Goodreads on Kindle Paperwhite (first and second generation devices) and the new Kindle Fires.

Let us know what you think about the Add Your Amazon Books feature. Did you rediscover any forgotten books?

Snoakes Will this be available to UK members in the future?

message 2: by Amanda (new)

Amanda I tried this just now and it didn't work. I purchased a bunch of books on kindle just yesterday and when I did the link above and logged into amazon, it told me I had no books to sync at this time. I'm also not seeing the "add amazon book purchases" link under My Books.

message 3: by Alan (new)

Alan Bartlett Sounds good but why not available in the UK?

message 4: by Andy (new)

Andy Parkes Why are most of these new features for Amazon/Kindle/Goodreads not being pushed out to the UK/Europe?

message 5: by Renee (new)

Renee YAY! THANKYOU GOODREADS!

message 6: by Sebastian (new)

Sebastian Hi Snoakes, yes, this will be available to UK users soon. Stay tuned!

Hi Amanda, not all users will see the "add amazon book purchases" link yet - we are rolling this out incrementally. However, if you are in the US you should be able to import using the link above.

Can you send me an email at support@goodreads.com and I'll be happy to look into this for you.

message 8: by Kevin (new)

Kevin I have some Kindle and Hardcover books, I clicked the link and it said:
"You currently do not have any Amazon book purchases to import.

Only books purchased on amazon.com, .ca, and .au sites may be viewed at this time.
If you purchased books from a different Amazon site, please try again soon!"

Does my GoodReads email address have to be the same as the amazon account's email address? I am in the US. Hope to figure this out, thanks!

message 9: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Will this functionality work even if you use a different email address for Amazon than the one used for Goodreads?

message 10: by Janet (new)

Janet I use a different email address for my amazon account. How can I access that email that doesn't match my goodreads email?

Hi Sarah (and Jan), when you click to link your account, our pop-up will ask you to enter your Amazon account details. Just login with your Amazon account info, even if it's different from Goodreads, and your account will be synced. You can then add your books!

message 12: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Meghan wrote: "Kevin, your email address should not have to be the same for both logins, but we'd love to take a look at this for you—could you email support (at) goodreads (dot) com so we can look into your spec..."

Sarah has responded to me via the site and helped address and fix the issue. Thanks though!

message 13: by Carol (new)

Carol Burnside This is so much faster than clicking back and forth either from my Kindle or my Amazon account on one tab and Goodreads on another. Thanks!

message 14: by Jesslyn (new)

Jesslyn I love this feature, thank you!

I would like to have the option of removing an item that I know I'll never add to GR (i.e. gifts). Not necessarily a Hide feature-that may be too complex at the moment, but I'd love to get all those gifts for my grandson off my list!

Anne - Books of My Heart What happens to books I have already read and reviewed? Does it just add the Amazon info or will it change what is already there?

message 16: by Betsy (new)

Betsy It doesn't seem to recognize that many of these books are already on my shelves. I don't want to add them twice.

message 17: by Saskia (new)

Saskia It works even if you do not live in the US, but as long as you bought from Amazon.com. I live in the Netherlands and it worked for me, but it didn't show all my books though.

message 18: by Bufo (last edited Apr 17, 2014 06:29AM) (new)

Bufo Calvin This seems to be similar to the functionality on the Kindle devices (for the ones which have it). It is only showing me recently purchased books, and I have something like a thousand which haven't been imported. My guess is that there might have been a size limit the first time it did the sync, and now it doesn't go back and re-query, just starts with books after the last sync (yes, I'm a geek). :) Any troubleshooting for it not importing all of the books? Are there books which wouldn't be imported (ones without ISBNs, perhaps)? Thanks!

message 19: by Elena (new)

Elena Is this really new? I think my Kindle Paperwhite already have that option :)

message 20: by Linda (new)

Linda Hudson I'm logged into Goodreads and I don't have the link to add Kindle books. It's not listed under the Tools section. How do I get it added?

Bufo Calvin Linda wrote: "I'm logged into Goodreads and I don't have the link to add Kindle books. It's not listed under the Tools section. How do I get it added?"

Unfortunately, you can't get it added at this point...it is rolling out, which means it will automatically appear in the future.

If you are in a country with early access, you can get to it here:

https://www.goodreads.com/amazon_purchases

message 22: by Janet (new)

Janet I logged in to my amazon account but now I'd like to link to a different amazon account. How can I do this? Can I unlink the first account?

message 23: by Jeremy (new)

Jeremy Frens I connected my Amazon.com account a few days ago on the "apps" tab in my profile, and I was able to add several of my Amazon.com purchases to Goodreads. I didn't have enough time to add them all, but when I went back the next day, I was told there were no books for me to add. There's absolutely no way I've added them all.

FWIW, I don't have a the link in the "Tools" section on My Books.

I logged out of my Amazon.com account and back in, and that didn't help.

I have the same issue. I have tried it 3 different times. I had to delete all the books I have added in order to get it to show any purchases made again. It seems to break down after about 1500 books.

update: I have counted and twice now I have been stopped at the 76th page. When it loads I have alot of the books duplicated on that page. I have over 5800 books and it does not let me even load half of them.

message 25: by Janyne (new)

Janyne I had this and was using it but now it has disappeared. What happened?

message 26: by Jknick (new)

Jknick Mine seems to be stopping at a number around 1500-2000 also....Please fix, like the feature.

message 27: by Lesley (last edited May 13, 2014 02:44AM) (new)

Lesley I have an Amazon.com account which I buy all my Kindle books through yet I don't have the Add Books ... link under the Tools on My Books page on GR.

Not only that, but when I clicked on the link provided on this page - Add Your Amazon Books - it just sent me back to the GR home page!

message 28: by Elke (new)

Elke Is this feature based on the country I live in? I'm in Germany but regularly purchase (ok, most are a free) Kindle titles at amazon.com, but none from amazon.de. Therefore, it would be great if I could add my amazon.com purchases to GR with that tool.

Laura (ローラ) Love this! Just added books from my last Amazon.com purchase. A bit sad that it doesn't show my full history, but I don't think Amazon does either.

Also, if this is available to Canada will it be able to sync up to Amazon.ca? I was only able to sync up my Amazon.com account. I also use Amazon.jp...

message 30: by Julie (new)

Julie Haigh I've got this feature on goodreads now and I'm in the UK. I think an author mistakenly posted something about the feature on Facebook: she said all your amazon reviews would transfer over too and I'm pretty sure this isn't the case (I've tried it and doesn't seem to). Can you confirm that you do still need to review on both sites so I can let them know if they are wrong?

message 31: by Liz (new)

Liz So what happens if I had already added the book to my shelves? Does this add them twice? Does it reconcile it some how?

message 32: by Jknick (new)

Jknick You can search for duplicates by going to my books, then batch edit then find duplicates is to the right of the screen.

Amy Betsy wrote: "It doesn't seem to recognize that many of these books are already on my shelves. I don't want to add them twice."

I have this problem too. In addition to now I cannot access Goodreads.com, I have to back in through another page on the website.

Can you choose which shelf to add to? I would create a new shelf for amazon and add books to that, so I can easily access them later for further categorizing.

message 35: by Kim (new)

Kim Is there a way to review what has been 'do not add' selected? I've been adding books with my tablet and have had a fat finger moment and hit the wrong button. Ahem :(

I have the same issue. Have you found a way to link your .ca account?

message 37: by Tara (new)

Tara I can't seem to link my Amazon.ca account, it only allows me to link to amazon.com

message 38: by Janet (new)

Janet I logged in to my amazon account but now I'd like to link to a different amazon account. How can I do this? Can I unlink the first account?

message 39: by Kristina (new)

Kristina My question is the same as Jan (message 42) - I have more than one Amazon account (complicated life) with different email addresses. How can I unlink one and link to another?

I found it! Go to your Profile - Account, go to Apps and UNLINK AMAZON ACCOUNT and sign in with the new one! If you can find it, go to GRs FAQ section and search for "amazon" and they explain it there too!

message 43: by Lesley (new)

Lesley It was said this feature was being rolled out gradually to other geographic regions. Four months have elapsed now. How long is gradually?

message 44: by Mutturaj (new)

Mutturaj is it available for india??

message 45: by Lesley (new)

Lesley When will this feature be available to others? Why do Australian members have the feature and not New Zealand members?

When US members got the feature it was said it was being rolled out gradually but that still hasn't happened. Now US members have a preview feature but nobody else has. Would Goodreads prefer to have this as a site just for US readers?

message 46: by Hannu (new)

Hannu Kokko I could access the feature for my amazon.com account and good see (all?) books - many pages of them. No button visible how to upload hundreds of books. clicked on a single book and after that none of the books are visible, cannot find the feature link any more and none of the books got uploaded.

message 47: by Rachel (new)

Rachel it kind of works for me, but only some books? Most of my kindle purchases are completely missing and they are not books yet in my library. So I'll still have to add manually.

message 48: by Adam (new)

Adam Sutton Is there a possibility for inverting this? I spent a good 2 hours updating my goodreads but Ive een a chapters man for years, only recently (when they rolled out free prime for students) did i register for amazon so it would be empty but my goodreads has all the info: is there a way to make it a two way sharing street?

message 49: by Christopher (new)

Christopher Berkey I only see the physical books I've ordered, not the Kindle purchase I made last week which isn't yet in your database. Is there a step that I've missed?

message 50: by Julie (new)

Julie Haigh Christopher, I suppose that's the reason the kindle book isn't showing up-if it's not in the Goodreads database, it can't show up until someone adds it. You could click 'add book manually' and enter the book details although a librarian would need to add the cover image.
