Join the 2014 Goodreads Reading Challenge!

Posted by Jessica on January 13, 2014

Goodreads members have already pledged to read more than 14 million books in 2014! What will you pledge? And most importantly, what will you be reading? As we turn the page on another year and plan our New Year's Resolutions, it's the perfect time to raise your reading ambitions. Set a goal with the 2014 Reading Challenge, and Goodreads will help you make it to the final chapter!

It's easy: Set a goal and track your progress throughout the year with the 2014 Reading Challenge. It doesn't matter how lofty or practical your target is, only that it's well-suited to you. Maybe a book every other month is the right pace, or maybe you're reading a book a week or more!

We always believe reading is best when shared. So if you're looking for some reading buddies, meander through the Goodreads groups section to find groups of every size, shape, and reading flavor—including groups dedicated to reading challenges. There's the Nothing but Reading Challenges group to super-charge your 2014 reading plan or the nobly adventurous group, 52 Weeks, 52 Books. You'll also find unique challenges in many of our genre groups, such as the 50 State Mystery Challenge in the Mystery, Crime & Thriller Group, the India Challenge in the History Book Club, and even weekly themed challenges in the Crazy for Young Adult Books group (this week's theme is in honor of National Hat Day)!

Still stumped for what to read? A few more suggestions: Take a look at your personalized recommendations, get lost in the oodles of book lists on Listopia, cross your fingers and enter a book giveaway, and check out the recently selected winners and runners-up of the Goodreads Choice Awards! And don't forget to challenge your friends to set their own reading goals for 2014. As they finish books, you'll see their reading lists displayed on the 2014 Reading Challenge page.

Turbo And on an unrelated topic... How are the "recommentations" by genre chosen? I have a cat that could do a better job of matching books to genre.

MGaby P-M Turbo wrote: "And on an unrelated topic... How are the "recommentations" by genre chosen? I have a cat that could do a better job of matching books to genre." Lol that's why I have my own 'to read' list and when I run out of that I ask people reading books I like what else to read ..... more reliable :-)

Preston What happened to the other options in the challenge, why can we can no longer see boks by pages, how we starred the books, and other stats in the challenge. Or if it's still there hidden somewhere how do we get to it. All I know is the redesign of the challenge is not to my liking, but you can't please the world.

Irishbookmammy Not sure who to send this to but why can't we see the stats on the 2014 reading challenge as in previous years I found it really interesting looking st the number of pages I read compared to other years. I suppose that is the geek in me but it would be great to have this option on the website and mobile app.

I found stats, that's what my complaint was, I found it by clicking My Books and stats is in the side menu on the left, just above api and under most read authors for me. or just type in /review/stats after goodreads.com.

MGaby P-M Now I gotta look that up!! I didn't even know you could see that!! I'm new to the challenge, but as geeky as this might sound, I used to write down what books I'd read through the year and I'm glad I can do it here. It's really cool to be able to compare even though I can't this year because I didn't do the challenge last year maybe I'll be able to next year. :-)

Hi Gaby you can just add the books you have read and when you are adding them you can select the date you finished reading. Once you have added all your books the stats section which Preston told me about will show you all your stats for the previous years :)

Thanks, I know I can do the adding the date thing but I don't know when I finished reading them :-)

Michael Gallagher Hi I joined the challenge but I do not know how to post the books I have read. What should I do please.

message 64: by Pattie (new)

Pattie Michael, when you finish reaching a book, and either rate it review it, further down on that page is a box for when you completed the book. Fill that in and click done and your book will automatically appear as complete in your reader challenge. I just learned this so I had to go back into the books I read this year and add a completion date (I just did month and year) which is why it looks like I read 4 books in one day :)

MGaby P-M Shoot, I put 100.... already 4 books behind because I haven't read much this past few weeks... one every 3 days is totally doable .... when I actually feel like reading.

You're not on your own I'm also 4 books behind for exactly the same reason as you.

I read (or start) ten or more books a week
Now relishing Nick Hornby's
Ten Years In The Tub
It's smart and funny and remarkably
Useful
You'll find it's a wonderfully succinct
Guide to what's good to read
I'd forgotten how great Charles Baxter
Is; try Nick's decade of soaking in
Good books

La La I am one book behind schedule. Not too bad...

Irishbookmammy I am 1 ahead for once but only because I always wanted to read the Velveteen Rabbit and I have seen reference to it in other books and films that I finally got a copy and read it. Being such a short book it brought me ahead :)This too was the case with Edgar Allen Poe's beautifully illustrated Tales of Mystery & Madness I highly recommend them as a bucket list read :) Lets hope I can keep up good luck everyone :)

message 75: by Pattie (new)

Pattie I am slightly behind schedule due to the sludge which was the middle section of The Goldfinch. That book started out with such promise only to become lost and bogged down in the middle. Third act couldn't really save it, I'm afraid. Reading a book that is nearly 800 pages will always put me behind as it should not be read too quickly. Sigh. My next choice must be shorter.

message 77: by Nicole (new)

Nicole I love the reading challenge! I'm glad it shows up in the app now but I'd love to be able to see the percentage I'm at and if I'm behind, on track, or ahead of schedule on the app because that's primarily how I update my status and I love to see how I'm doing. I would also LOVE if the app offered notifications for the reading challenge, such as when I fall behind or go from being ahead of schedule to on-track. Any plans for these tweaks in the future?

Rose Fielding Once upon a lie by Maggie Barbieri
Is surprisingly good
She writes in a distinctive style that
Is unique in mysteries
Having owned 4 bookstores myself
It's clear that most women buy those
Books that interest them whether
The author is a woman or not
Whereas men with few exceptions
Prefer male writers
I read a lot
Around ten books a week
(but I don't finish those which make
me wonder how in the world they
found a publisher)
Rose: I'd like to hear from new friends

Rose Fielding I very much recommend Nick Hornby
All of his books are good; some are
Superb
Funny insightful
His Ten Years In The Tub is a wonderful
source for what to read next
It's a collection of his unorthodox
personal reviews of what he's enjoyed
reading taken from his column
titled A Decade Soaking In Great Books
Find it; you'll feel as I do; it's a treasure!

message 91: by MGaby (new)

MGaby P-M Btw, I'm 4 books ahead of schedule finally! Thanks to freaking Divergent! I totally fell in love with the books just because I found the preview for the movie interesting and saw it was based on a book... so as a crazy person that I am, I had to read the books b4 I watched the movie. Good choice too because I am now obsessed! :-) how's everyone doing?? What have you read that has gotten you hooked?

message 92: by Preston (new)

Preston I try and do that too, somebody wants me to see a movie and I read the book if I have the time and money. This year I just haven't found a good set of interesting suck me in books to pump up my numbers, at least not so far. A few years ago if not for the challenge I do not believe I would be trying to read a book a week every year as my personal goal.
