Get Cozy! 30 Books with Major Autumn Vibes

Autumn, as a season, has a particular vibe. It’s the season of winding down, of things ending. The days get shorter and colder—in the northern hemisphere, anyway. It’s a melancholy kind of vibe. A good time for reading.
In an effort to roll with the season, we’ve gathered below 30 books that conjure that elusive autumn vibe. This has been a totally unscientific and largely intuitive process, cutting across various genres, styles, and moods. Like autumn itself, the books here can get a little creepy, a little cozy, and occasionally a little Gothic.
You’ll find universally acclaimed classics along with new historical fiction and some very recent titles that ride that autumnal vibe. Also watch for back-to-school stories and the usual Halloween parade: ghosts, vampires, witches, and assorted weirdness.
Click on the book cover images for more information about each title, and feel free to add any autumn leads to your Want to Read shelf. If you have any additional suggestions for your fellow Goodreaders, post them below in the comments section.

We Have Always Lived at the Castle by Shirley Jackson has a very autumn vibe, despite being set in summer. And I always feel like reading Dorothy Sayers, Agatha Christie or Ethel Lina White around this time of year!

I would add First Frost by Sarah Addison Allen, A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness, and Possession by A.S. Byatt.

I would add "Mrs. Poe" by Lynn Cullen. I read it several years ago in the Fall, and it had just the right Halloween vibe. Although it's not entirely historically accurate in its depiction of Poe's wife (as she was reportedly not a malicious person, just the opposite), it did have some very interesting context and was a great, spooky story.

My favorite autumnal read is Stephen King's The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. Very spooky in a Blair Which kind of way.

80% of these are on my "every autumn TBR" that I just never get to and keep moving to the next year. Maybe this time I will get to all of them.

An Oldie but Goodie Horror story with the feel of Stephen King
Sometimes what we see isn't what is.
It was almost as if time had not touched the village of Cornwall Coombe. The quiet, peaceful place was straight out of a bygone era, with well-cared-for Colonial houses, a white-steepled church fronting a broad Common. Ned and Beth Constantine chanced upon the hamlet and immediately fell in love with it. This was exactly the haven they dream of. Or so they thought.
