100 Years of Popular Books on Goodreads

This is a fun one: For the collection below, we decided to take a long-arc overview and try to identify the most popular books published over the past 100 years, as determined by Goodreads members' digital shelves. To do this, we went year by year and picked one title from among the top of each pile.
However, we didn’t always just grab the very top book for several reasons. Repeats, for instance (some entire eras are Very Stephen King). And some years saw multiple Very, Very Important Works published. Ah, the backstage agony of debating the relative merits of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Virginia Woolf, and Franz Kafka!
Mostly we wanted to curate a list that would cover a range of genres and suggest the breadth of reading interests over time. And OK, full confession, it tickled our fancy to be able to put Ulysses and Malibu Rising on the same list.
It's actually pretty fascinating: There are plenty of old-school masterpieces, of course, and a good supply of those books most likely to be found in required school curricula. But you’ll also find gonzo journalism, children’s classics, international literature, Arabic poetry, existentialist dread, and even graphic novels.
It just goes to show, once again, that Goodreads members are interesting, widely read, devastatingly good-looking people. Scroll over the book covers to learn more about each title, and add the ones that catch your interest to your Want to Read shelf (assuming they aren't already there, of course).

I am kind of happy to say, that a handful of these are either on my never ending TBR-Pile or I have already read them. :)

I realize that I am far more cultured (?) in "classics" that I thought (especially in science fiction / dystopian novels ), and I am quite happy with that ! Also, this article raised my interest, reminding me that Coraline, my favourite film, was also a book ! (11 read)
I have read 14 books out of the 100! I will keep this list saved for future so I can prioritize the books that are here and on my TBR.

I've read 11 (have a couple as To Read), but all except 4 of them are 1 or 2 star books for me. The 4 that aren't are 4 or 5 stars--apparently there's no in between for me with these.
I've read 31 of these so far, and may have read to more, but don't remember much about them, if I did.
I have read 20 and have quite a few more on my TBR! Looks like a good challenge to read all of these.
Interesting list, and it made me want to spend some time with it. I'd like to see more lists like this, even by genre. 100 years of sci-fi/fantasy would be dangerous fun. 100 years of non-fiction -- assuming GR didn't go with all biographies and memoirs - would probably be a mind-trip. 41 read. 6 others DNF'd. Only 2 on my TBR list? uh oh.
A very interesting list...surprised that I have actually read more than 10...but TBH didn't enjoy some of them. However, planning to read more from this list
An interesting list. I've been devouring books for 50 years and my taste has changed considerably. I now only read that which appeals to me rather than that which I should read or is popular. That said, I havent even heard of a number of these.....
Just from first glance, I've read 12 and have 26 on my TBR list. I'll review the list and see how many more I add. It's interesting comparing this list to the 100 books selected by the Great American Read on PBS several years ago. There are quite a few books that appear on both.
Really interesting list. I've read 32 of these and some of my favorites were The Grapes of Wrath, The Book Thief, The Poisonwood Bible, Game of Thrones and the Pillars of the Earth. Shout out to The Road just for memorability and superior writing by McCarthy. I really disliked Cloud Atlas and Never Let Me Go. I've also quit three-- Catch-22, Dune and The Golden Compass.
Additionally have several on my shelves waiting to be read.
Have read 29TBR 18
Some truly great books on here but also a surprising number of mehs.
I guess you said "popular" not "great"
I've read 14, that's more than I expected XD And a few I'm actually planning to read soon! Definitely wanna save this list.
I've read 25 and now have a few more added to my TBR. I'm looking forward to 'We'...though I couldn't find the one you list that was translated by Bela Shayevich.
I'm happy to say I've read 30, and a lot of them are on my TBR.I'll have a browse through the ones that are not yet on my list
this is one of the best book lists I've ever seen.only read 5 of them tho
and most of them are want to read
My brain read this and thought oh wow imagine 100 years ago people were using goodreads >)) anyway i have 20/100 on my read/tbr. If you haven't read House of Leaves do yourself a favour and read it ASAP
Quite surprised to find I've read 22 and have many more on TBR, so there's hope yet! However, the list is very American based and I find that I've read more English literature rather than American.

I agree that the list is very very American in it's choices. What's wrong with some British writers!
I've read 55, and there are another 5 or 6 on my TBR list. There is an interesting mix of books that I read for college and grad school, for teaching, and by my own choice over several decades of reading. I'm trying to find a book for a "best seller from the year of your birth" reading challenge prompt and was disappointed that I have already read your option for that year!
