A Speculative Fiction Superfan Picks 48 Genre Gems

Posted by Cybil on March 9, 2022

Kerine Wint is a software engineering graduate with more love for books than for computers. As an avid reader, writer, and fan of all things content-related, she has found joy as a freelance writer and reviewer of speculative fiction for publications such as FIYAH literary magazine and Publishers Weekly. Through her reviews, she has made a hub of bookish content for herself surrounded by book lovers alike.

With the roster of speculative fiction growing and evolving every year, it’s easy for amazing backlist titles to get stuck beneath the pile. While various tropes and subgenres abound, there are hidden gems yet to be discovered. With our TBRs growing with our new year ambitions, I know we’re all ignoring some of those books “we’ve been meaning to get to” and “will definitely read this year.”

Luckily, we’re still early enough into 2022 to pace ourselves for the upcoming releases, so it’s a great time to show some love to these books in the meantime.

SFF has always delivered a variety—of inventive stories and formats—that it’s hard to say there isn’t a book out there for you. Think you can handle a high sci-fi, multi-POV of silenced voices and tested allegiances? Can’t recommend The First Sister by Linden A. Lewis enough! Want an X-Men–type story following the sociopolitical divide between genetically engineered beings and humans? Try Gemsigns by Stephanie Saulter! Check out The Book of M by Peng Shepherd if you can stomach a gradual dystopian plagued by lost shadows. And if you’re looking for a solid collection for easier commitment, Alias Space and Other Stories by Kelly Robson may work for you!

These books from the last ten years will make the wait for new releases worth it!

Scroll over the book covers to learn more about each title, and add the ones that pique your interest to your Want to Read shelf!

I'm especially excited about The Wolf of Oren-Yaro😃

message 12: by ✰ᴢᴏᴇ✰ (new)

✰ᴢᴏᴇ✰ (keefe’s version) speculative fiction kinda terrifies me

message 13: by Niche (new)

Niche Interesting, I've always seen "speculative fiction" used as a sub-genre of scifi and weird/dystopian horror rather than a blanket synonym for sff.

message 14: by Ali (new)

Ali T Surprised there is nothing there by Peter F Hamiliton, surely the greatest sci-fi writer alive today

message 15: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa Carr The Unspoken Name by AK Larkwood - And the sequel is even better....

message 16: by Šárka (new)

Šárka Králíková If there's Book of M on this list, I have serious doubts the other books can be good.

message 17: by Vajnis (new)

Vajnis The Space Between Worlds - Micaiah Johnsons masterpiece,
is one of the best books I read that have a strong and fantastic female lead character.

message 18: by Kyle (new)

Kyle So excited to try out Light from Uncommon Stars https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5...

message 19: by R. (new)

R. Garcia I know this one deserves a review: Death Song of the Dragón Chicxulub

message 20: by Summer (new)

Summer (speaking_bookish) I really enjoyed The Space Between Worlds; First, Become Ashes; Rolling in the Deep and the book this is companion too- Into the Drowning Deep (one of my favorite books); The Order of the Pure Moon Reflected in Water.. didn’t love The Deep but it was ok.

Can’t wait to read Winters Orbit, Tender is the Flesh, Trouble the Saints, The Wolf of Oren-Yaro, Under the Pendulum Sun, The Monster of Elendhaven, The Book of M (Reading this authors newest novel- The Cartographers- right now), A Psalm for the Wild Built, The Tangleroot Palace, and The Master of Poisons.

Excellent list!!

message 21: by Mary (new)

Mary Colson I recommend that everyone do a search for reviews of those books that seem interesting. For instance, "A History of What Comes Next" is the first book in a series, and I found that out in the second review I read. There are series where each book is complete, and there are series that leave you hanging between books, and some people do not like the latter.

message 22: by Jack (new)

Jack Kirchhoff I wouldn't have thought it possible, but out of these 48, the only name I recognize is Jeff VanderMeer. A sign of how out of touch I am with SF and fantasy these days, I guess.

message 23: by Chas (new)

Chas I want to copy the list and print it out but I don't want the pictures of books. What can I do? Thanks

message 24: by Leigh (new)

Leigh The Master of Djinn is absolutely fantastic. I've been impatiently waiting for a sequel since I read the review copy.

message 25: by Kjetil (new)

Kjetil Nesheim I am really surprised that with so many selections only one was somewhat interesting.

Deleted. I wasn’t aware that mentioning a book I wrote as a Goodreads Author was considered spam.
