Travel Back in Time With These New Historical Fiction Novels

If you’ve ever been on a serious historical fiction kick, then you already know how rewarding it can be. When it's done properly, historical fiction is like time travel. The dry pages of history come to life as the author leverages classical narrative virtues—characterization, atmosphere—and transports the reader back to another era. That magical space between the page and your brain becomes a portal in time.
The good news is that the historical fiction genre is a busy one, so there are always new trips to take. We’ve collected below several dozen new and upcoming historical fiction books, all of which are either on shelves now or will be by the end of May.
You’ll find both old friends and new voices in this collection. High-profile titles from veteran authors include Isabel Allende’s Violeta, Fiona Davis’ The Magnolia Palace, and Chanel Cleeton’s Our Last Days in Barcelona. Also look for new books from Marie Benedict (Her Hidden Genius) and Julia Kelly (Last Dance of the Debutante).
New stories in this collection offer notional trips to 1970s East Texas, 1940s North Carolina, or the American West in the 1880s. For the courageous, how about some supernatural suspense in 19th-century Mexico?
Scroll over the book covers to learn more about each title, and add the ones that pique your interest to your Want to Read shelf! And have fun exploring the time-space continuum and feel free to continue the discussion in the comments section.

I already had The Christie Affair on my list because I am a huge Agatha Christie fan, but I am going to immediately download The Last Dance of the Debutante. This is probably because I am heading to the UK later this week and have Queen Elizabeth on my mind!
