36 Breakout Debuts of 2021 (So Far)

Posted by Cybil on June 28, 2021

Full confession: We love a great debut novel! There's nothing like watching an author launch their first novel into the world and seeing them find their brand-new fans. And for us bookworms, falling for a first-time author can start a very long reading relationship.

We wanted to find the most popular new debuts of the first half of 2021, so we peeked into our data to find the first books that had the most Want to Read adds from your fellow readers and an average rating of at least 3.5 stars. Oh, also, for this list we are defining a debut as a writer's first novel-length work of fiction.

Scroll over the book covers to learn more about each novel, and be sure to add the books that pique your interest to your Want to Read shelf!

TMR Interesting collection.

message 2: by Tanya (new)

Tanya Ariadne was pretty disappointing. Not the "feminist retelling" it is marketed as.

message 3: by Ryder (new)

Ryder Kinlay are there any self-published ones - or horrors in that?

message 4: by Hazel Bee (new)

Hazel Bee I haven't read any of these & won't get to them this year.

James Yawn

Tracy Ascher Ariadne was boring. Hoping for more Circe vibes but didn’t get that.

Nadia Happy to see that a lot of these are BOTM (Book of the Month) picks!

I'm all about supporting undies, LOL.

I guess you meant indies. Good luck with your books!

Rabiatu Ruma Hey everyone,
Please support my fantasy novel A Prophecy of Dawn A Prophecy of Dawn by Rabiatu Abba Ruma . I've had very good reviews so far, therefore I can confidently say it will be well worth your time.
Thanks.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* I'm reading The Firekeeper's Daughter right now.

Otherwise, haven't read any yet. A few look good.

Geri Windsor Thanks for asking.
If murders& attempted murders per page is a
measure of murder mystery value(even with
some in a country house location),this
breaks all records-and has iconic UK
locations. The Wicked Witch of the West is a
cuddly pussycat compared to these villains:

Lydia Woodward I suggest Headspace by J.D. Edwin! It's a fantastic soft sci-fi novel that is coming out on July 13th.

message 14: by Ally (new)

Ally The Prophets and The Lost Apothecary were two of my most anticipated and my most disappointing reads thus far this year. The Prophets in particular was really not worth my time. Girl A and The Push were more interesting, the latter being my only 5 star book on this list (really 4.5, but GR STILL doesn't give 1/2 stars...). I'm most looking forward to The Firekeeper's Daughter though.

message 15: by Debi (new)

Debi I don't understand the hype about Ariadne. Thought it was just an average book. An uninteresting rendition of an interesting myth

message 16: by Carol (new)

Carol Copeland The DamageThe Damage
Crime and psychological Thriller. well-written. excellent character development. surprise twist at the end.

message 17: by Robert (new)

Robert Mattia Try my 5 star reviewed book “ When we were young”🙏

message 18: by Donna (new)

Donna DeGrandchamp I think you should add "The Rough Ride" by Nonna Henry to your breakout novel must reads! It was a clever, intriguing, funny and full of what makes one want to keep reading! It is definitely a great vacation, beach, wherever read!

message 19: by Maureen (new)

Maureen Stanton An amazing debut novel, The Cape Doctor by E.J. Levy just released! Starred review from Booklist and other raves--well deserved! The writing is exquisite, the story compelling. B&N Summer pick, too. Don't miss this remarkable book.

The Cape Doctor by E.J. Levy

Steve Holloway Pelagia: Between the Stars and the Abyss

Something a bit different.

message 21: by Meg (new)

Meg "Damnation Spring" by Ash Davidson. So good.

message 22: by Isabelle (new)

I've ordered this book so looking forward to reading it.

message 24: by Bastian (new)

Bastian Gregory Please read " Aboard the Timeline"- a historical travel novel for children aged about 8- 13 years old written by Bastian Gregory who sadly passed away 1 week after the publishers (Pegasus) said they would publish his book. It was just launched in May, and I am trying to get it noticed around the world as a tribute to him and his life. It is fun; full of mystery; great vocabulary, and most of all humour and a great story line.

Written by Bastian Gregory- my son, who sadly passed away 1 week before we were notified that his first children's book would be published.

message 26: by Dottie (new)

Dottie Due Things we lost to the water--disappointing historical fiction.. I never finished it as I lost interest half way through.

message 27: by Reesa (new)

Reesa Davis Becoming Leidah is inventive, literary, and a bizarre blend of exhilarating and serious. Not a whimsical beach read - it's an intense family drama, and yet it takes you to a wildly imaginative world of exquisite delights. I bonded with all the main characters. I want to be Leidah, and I'm so thankful for the extent to which this book made that possible - both while reading and after.
