back safe, new LMB interview

Hiya --

It's too late tonight to say anything but Hi, I flew back safely from San Antonio and boy are my arms tired, but among the (many) other high points of the WorldCon was a one-hour interview I did with a local journalist on Friday afternoon, now boiled down to this neat article.

I will post more as the week and I wear on. It was a very good WorldCon!

Steve Excellent interview, Lois, with questions and answers that aren't part of the standard interview. Really thoughtful ideas about reproduction and where your worlds come from.

Yes, I was really pleased with this journalist's depth and acuity. She was definitely a cut above what one expects from local papers covering WorldCons. (Actually, considering how dire that can get -- several cuts above.)

It's from a transcript of a verbal interview, so it's not as tightly or coherently expressed as what I could have done in an e-mail or written interview (I want to red-pencil the hell out of my part, sigh), but I suppose it sounds more spontaneous. I talk in first draft, alas, which means I more often bracket my meaning with friendly fire than hit it square-on.

Steve For one thing, she had actually read your books! I have dealt with many journalists over the years, some of whom took the trouble to be prepared for the conversation. But many were just winging it. Some actually said they preferred the "spontaneity" of "going in fresh." It always felt like an excuse for "laziness" to me. :-)

John With regard to uterine replicators, I still think that some very large proportion of first babies would be body births. Actual or legendary problems with replicators would have lots of coverage, both in news media and the grapevine, and I just suspect that many young women would think it was *the* challenge of their gender, just as many young men think they want to go to war. Or, it crosses my mind, in the manner that many first babies used to get cloth diapers before the parents decided it was too much trouble. I still wonder if cotton diapers are actually better for the baby, or that was a ploy of the diaper services.
