5 Things Every Author Shouldn't Take for Granted

1. Positive reviews. They're not the status quo. Rather than going after negative reviews, take the time to thank the people who leave the positive ones!

2. Fans. Count yourself lucky that someone likes your books enough to get excited over them to the point to fangirl/fanboy over!

3. Reading. You can learn what you should do from the good stuff, and what you shouldn't do from the bad stuff. Any writer that says they don't have time to read shouldn't be taken seriously.

4. Criticism. Sometimes the stuff that hurts the most to hear can be the most valuable to a writer.

5. Sales. Sales = money! Someone wanted to read your books enough to pay money for them! Be grateful to the people who make it possible to do what you love for a career.

Derrolyn Anderson True all. I love fans, I've grown MASSIVELY from criticism, and hey, SALES - What's not to like?

You Nenia, are charming and disarming, and you interact so gracefully with people that it's a gift.
Me? I feel weird responding to reviews. I'm so politically incorrect I unintentionally rub people the wrong way, and I might do better as a hermit author.

I'm going to go read something now :)

Nenia Campbell Oh, don't be so tough on yourself! You strike me as a most wonderful individual indeed, or I wouldn't have voted you on the Authors Behaving Beautifully list. (Your book is next in my firing line of victims; BE FOREWARNED.)

Truth be told, I'm quite shy and awkward in real life. I am a little afraid of fame, because I fear I will turn into a stammering dolt should I ever happen on the business end of a newscamera. SO LET'S BE HERMIT AUTHORS TOGETHER! :D

Ooooh, yay, reading!

Lottie Eve This post just proves how awesome you are to everybody who didn't know it yet. The authors I have interacted with have been very nice and classy so far. One author even joked about one of the things that bothered me in one of her books (the flaw was a mild case of insta-love). But I do know that some authors take the five things you have listed for granted.
P.S. What book are you about to read by Derrolyn? I read The Athena Effect and loved it!

Nenia Campbell Oh, yes, I think people underestimate the amount of classy and wonderful authors on here. I just added about six to the Authors Behaving Beautifully list, because I was so amazed by their kindness and charity.

I'm reading The Athena Effect too! I plan to start it as soon as I finish 'Til the World Ends. :)
