As a kid, if I hated a book, I would rewrite the ending or offending scene to my liking. (I am such a dork, I know.) Then I realized that I could write original books of my own. Mind = blown!

Toni Morison has a great quote that explains on this:

“The villains were always ugly in books and movies. Necessarily so, it seemed. Because if they were attractive—if their looks matched their charm and their cunning—they wouldn't only be dangerous.

They would be irresistible.”
Nenia Campbell, Horrorscape

“Once upon a time, there was a naïve and innocent girl who thought she could tame the beast and live happily ever after. But the beast did not want to be tamed, for he was a beast and beasts care not for such things, and the girl died along with her dreams.

From childhood's grave sprang a young woman, jaded before her years, who knew that beasts could wear the skins of men, and that evil could exist in sunlight, as well as darkness.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.”
Nenia Campbell, Terrorscape

“Happiness is such a fragile thing, isn't it? So easily burst, like a bubble blown by a child, and always on the verge of being carried away.”
Nenia Campbell, Endgame

“It starts so young, and I'm angry about that. The garbage we're taught. About love, about what's "romantic." Look at so many of the so-called romantic figures in books and movies. Do we ever stop and think how many of them would cause serious and drastic unhappiness after The End? Why are sick and dangerous personality types so often shown a passionate and tragic and something to be longed for when those are the very ones you should run for your life from? Think about it. Heathcliff. Romeo. Don Juan. Jay Gatsby. Rochester. Mr. Darcy. From the rigid control freak in The Sound of Music to all the bad boys some woman goes running to the airport to catch in the last minute of every romantic comedy. She should let him leave. Your time is so valuable, and look at these guys--depressive and moody and violent and immature and self-centered. And what about the big daddy of them all, Prince Charming? What was his secret life? We dont know anything about him, other then he looks good and comes to the rescue.”

Helena FC You're welcome!

The Tied Man and Schadenfreude are my favourite dark romances. I hope that you like them, too!!!

When books become unavailable on Amazon, I usually go to Smashwords and check if the authors are selling the book as an epub/mobi file, rather than it going directly to Kindle.

Her Master's Courtesan is available at Smashwords:

But unfortunately, The One Worth Finding is not :(

And thank you for the recommendation! I'll definitely check out The Last Innocent Hour. :D

message 977: by Helena

Helena FC Hi! Well, thank you for accepting my friend request! I honestly have to be in a certain mood to read dark romances because of the heavy subject matter. And boy do I know that some of these are hit or miss.

Deliver is definitely a favourite dark romance of mine, as well. I see you recently read Tender Mercies by Kitty personal favourite of hers is Comfort Food. It's pretty dark, but it really goes into psychology of those suffering from Stockholm Syndrome. I read it in one sitting because it completely captivated me!

I think my ultimate favourite is The Tied Man by Tabitha McGowan. It's not necessarily the "best-written one", but I was so invested in the characters that I re-read it on a regular basis. I also like Schadenfreude by 19 which is probably the darkest I've ever read, and takes place in Holocaust-era Germany. The One Worth Finding by Teresa Silberstern isn't dark, but it does depict an accurate BDSM relationship (unlike 50 Shades of Grey cough cough). ;)

Others I've read and enjoyed are: Break Her by B.G. Harlen, Killing Sarai by J.A. Redmerski, The Siren by Tiffany Reisz, Captive in the Dark by C.J. Roberts, & Her Master's Courtesan by Lily White

Aoife I saw this yesterday and had to think of you: The Internet Archive has lots of romances - bodice rippers and newer ones to borrow. No library card necessary, just Adobe Editions (and an e-reader who can read epub). I only got one book from there so far, but the file-quality is good, no errors in the text.

Cyn Hey Nenia :) Great to meet you and I look forward to talking to you and seeing you around GR.

I just think chinchillas are so adorable - I especially love their big ears :3 Happy reading and writing!

Nenia wrote: "Hi Cyn! Thank you so much for adding me. I love your username btw! Chinchillas are super cute and as you can see from my own username, I'm also a huge fan of reading trash. :D"

Karlyflower *The Vampire Ninja, Luminescent Monster & Wendigo Nerd Goddess of Canada (according to The Hulk)* I just finished an emotionally draining military romance..... I think I'm picking up SOFT LIMITS. And then I'll read the freebie second book in the military set.

Heather *Awkward Queen and Unicorn Twin* YOU DID?!?! All I found was Jane's Addiction stuff and a random song that was definitely NOT it.

*bookmarks playlist* I love Poe, and obviously Concrete Blonde! I'll definitely be listening to this later. :D

Karlyflower *The Vampire Ninja, Luminescent Monster & Wendigo Nerd Goddess of Canada (according to The Hulk)* Thank you! I got my nose pierced on Saturday and I'm still way too excited about it.

Hmmmm, well okay then. How delightfully vague. Perhaps I will have to find another category for LIVING OUT LOUD to fall under.

Karlyflower *The Vampire Ninja, Luminescent Monster & Wendigo Nerd Goddess of Canada (according to The Hulk)* Because you always know stuff that eludes me.

Is it considered NA if only one of the parties is a New Adult (she's 18) and the other isn't?

Heather *Awkward Queen and Unicorn Twin* EXCLUSIVE SOUNDTRACK RELEASE!!! XD

(view spoiler)

Let me know if you need help finding any of the ~super specific~ versions I have chosen, lol. <3

Jayson Hi Nenia! Thanks for accepting my friend invite. In terms of recent favorites, actually the last series I finished, Percy Jackson & the Olympians, was surprisingly good. Before that I read some great graphic novels: Batman Volume 1: The Court of Owls, Velvet and Deadly Class. I look forward to seeing you around here. Have a great day!

message 939: by Kelly

Kelly Oh, thanks a lot!!! Just to tell you my favorite genre would be fantasy.... now you know, GOSH LOVE HORSES, I always wanted to try horse back ridding, but i'm scared that when I'm riding the horse.. the horse would flip me over, and I would fell flat on my face. I know that it a ridiculous reason not to try horse back riding..

message 933: by Kelly

Kelly Thanks for accepting! Your reading Keep Marching: How to Take Action and Change Our World? It great that your a few authors that actually it standing up for feminism.... Have fun reading!

mooseinspace☆☽ I am right there with ya! lol I had been reading a lot of YA lately and I was just like, I want some good, deep romance right about now. If it's smutty, even better.

Hmm, as far as favorite authors go. I haven't delved deep into the romance pool, to be honest. I've been kind of sticking to the same ones that I know and love - and that definitely needs to change!

I love Nora Roberts (I am Nora Roberts trash, tbh), Jude Deveraux (The Duchess has been read about 129038213098 times because I love it so much), and Patricia Briggs (I think she counts?).

I would LOOOOVE any and all recommendations.
