As a kid, if I hated a book, I would rewrite the ending or offending scene to my liking. (I am such a dork, I know.) Then I realized that I could write original books of my own. Mind = blown!

Toni Morison has a great quote that explains on this:

How I review and what the ratings mean

Everyone reviews differently and my system is a bit weirder than most. I rate PURELY on entertainment alone. This is why manga and romance novels can get 5s while Shakespeare and that one history book you found super informative can get 1s. I'll usually acknowledge any benefits a book might have, but I won't change my ratings based on them. This has made people angry with me in the past but I'm no Read more of this blog post »

More of Nenia ⚔️ Queen of Villainy ⚔️'s books…
“The villains were always ugly in books and movies. Necessarily so, it seemed. Because if they were attractive—if their looks matched their charm and their cunning—they wouldn't only be dangerous.

They would be irresistible.”
Nenia Campbell, Horrorscape

“Once upon a time, there was a naïve and innocent girl who thought she could tame the beast and live happily ever after. But the beast did not want to be tamed, for he was a beast and beasts care not for such things, and the girl died along with her dreams.

From childhood's grave sprang a young woman, jaded before her years, who knew that beasts could wear the skins of men, and that evil could exist in sunlight, as well as darkness.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.”
Nenia Campbell, Terrorscape

“Happiness is such a fragile thing, isn't it? So easily burst, like a bubble blown by a child, and always on the verge of being carried away.”
Nenia Campbell, Endgame

“It starts so young, and I'm angry about that. The garbage we're taught. About love, about what's "romantic." Look at so many of the so-called romantic figures in books and movies. Do we ever stop and think how many of them would cause serious and drastic unhappiness after The End? Why are sick and dangerous personality types so often shown a passionate and tragic and something to be longed for when those are the very ones you should run for your life from? Think about it. Heathcliff. Romeo. Don Juan. Jay Gatsby. Rochester. Mr. Darcy. From the rigid control freak in The Sound of Music to all the bad boys some woman goes running to the airport to catch in the last minute of every romantic comedy. She should let him leave. Your time is so valuable, and look at these guys--depressive and moody and violent and immature and self-centered. And what about the big daddy of them all, Prince Charming? What was his secret life? We dont know anything about him, other then he looks good and comes to the rescue.”

Shannon Ha, it's funny, I'm not much of a wine drinker but I just so happen to be sitting here sipping a bubbly rosé from a can while watching the extra ep of Tiger King where Joel McHale interviews the various characters from the show over Facetime (I'm guessing) because of the pandemic, while sponsored by Apple (also another guess due to the Airpods everyone is wearing). So maybe I'll check that series out, lol.

Side note, what a weird timeline we're living in.

message 1024: by Shannon

Shannon Aaahh, gotcha. That's a great way to check out new series. I actually have the first three volumes (physical copies) of Princess Jellyfish on my shelves - just haven't gotten around to them yet.

I read shoujo (and a bit of josei) a lot more back in the day but I mostly read seinen/shounen now. I like the darker more grittier series and not so much the romance anymore. The first volume of Vinland Saga is available on KU! That's one of the best series I've read recently ... if you wanted an unsolicited rec lol.

Shealea "Probably FULL DISCLOSURE by Camryn Garrett. It's a young adult book about a black bisexual girl who is HIV+. She has two adoptive dads who are supportive not just of her illness but also of her desire to pursue a relationship/sex. The story is incredibly sex positive, her parents are great, and it is honestly the first book I've read that's set in San Francisco and manages to bring my city to life with all of its highs and lows instead of using it as a shiny backdrop for rich people's burgeoning romances like it's a stand-in for Paris. That's not really brief... but I'm kind of obsessed with that book and I recommend it to everyone I know. :D;"

Yes, this has been sitting in my TBR for the longest time. I've been wanting so badly to read it, but unfortunately, I can't afford to buy new books right now. Maybe someday! Thank you for the lovely recommendation! I appreciate the passion you have for this beautiful sex-positive YA novel.

Thanks for accepting my request! Hmmm, so far I've only read the first four Kate Daniels books (plus one of the novellas), and the first three Innkeeper books. And as much as I'm enjoying KD, as a whole I think I might like Innkeeper slightly more...although only by the tiniest fraction. They're just such fun, and pure escapism. message 990: by Kelpie

Kelpie Would you believe that it took until today for me to see that you left a comment on my profile in MARCH? Sheesh... Sorry about that!

Anyway, my favourite authors? The all-time top spot goes to Marlon James. There's just something about his books. I can't get them out of my head for months after I've finished them.

Honorable mentions to JY Yang, Clive Barker, Brandon Sanderson, Peter F. Hamilton... and then three franchise authors, because I love Warhammer and I love the way they write Warhammer: Graham McNeill, Dan Abnett, and Aaron Dembski-Bowden.

I need to read more romance. A LOT more romance. Who're your faves?

Heather *Undercover Goth Queen* I hadn't seen it! Creepy and interesting!

Looks like I spoke too soon about The Highlander's Embrace --- sorry it didn't float your boat so much :( Donna Fletcher writes books that go back to the Picts in the Dark Ages/Early Iron Age, so I was already used to her writing style and her H's mega-alpha behavior that I didn't put a lot of stock into it in this story. I like my smut historicals with some plot lines (which is what this falls into), but I also like my smut historicals with some more depth (like Tessa Dare, Lily Blackwood, some Julie Garwoods. etc.). :)
