Herbert was the guiding light of progressive American public policy virtually from the time he founded the Hoover Institute on War, Revolution and Peace at Stanford University. It's safe to say that every President since he left the Oval Office himself relied upon him for his sage advice and insight into public affairs.

Today the Hoover Institution continues his legacy and is universally recognized as one of the premiere public policy think tanks in the world. Herbert wrote extensively on the subject after he earned his degree in geology in 1895 as a member of Stanford University's first graduation class.

As the Stanford team manager in 1892, Herbert participated in the inaugural Cal-Stanford football rivalry game, known since as the "Big Game" (I'm a Cal alum, so I put Cal first). Stanford won the contest (14-10) and leads the overall series 59-46.

Fourteen years after completion, Boulder Creek Dam was officially renamed Hoover Dam by an act of Congress.
