Sixteen years after Commodore John Drake Sloat, the state's first governor, claimed California as a U.S. territory, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Pacific Railroad Act in 1862. The legislation promoted the construction of the First Transcontinental Railway by authorizing the issuance of government bonds and the grants of land to railroad companies.

Charles Crocker, one of the so-called Big Four business executives who formed the Central Pacific Railroad Company in 1863, was tasked with actually building the railroad from Sacramento, California, to Promontory Point, Utah. He started learning the railroad construction business his first day on the job. The grade he built over the Sierra Nevada mountain range was a monumental achievement for that age in time.

Charles was the president of Wells Fargo & Company during the period he held a controlling interest in the firm. The Anglo-Crocker Bank he later established became Crocker National Bank. Interestingly, Wells Fargo Bank acquired the bank in 1986.

The freight forwarding company that Henry Wells and William Fargo formed in 1844 is now known as the American Express Company.
