At the urging of Tonantius Ferreolus, the Roman praetorian prefect of Gaul, Merovech joined his army with those led by Roman general Flavius Aëtius and the Visigothic king Theodoric I to defeat Attila the Hun at the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains in 451. The Roman Empire victory ultimately ended the Hunnic bid to conquer Gaul.
After the battle, Merovech seized Paris and began to expand his empire to the Loire River. Clovis I, his grandson, further expanded the lands under Merovingian control to encompass most of the region occupied by present-day France. Clovis would later be recognized as the first ruler of all the Frankish tribes and, thus, the first monarch of France.
Charlemagne was their direct agnatic descendant.
