Archbishop of Reims Regnault de Chartres personally crowned Charles VII de Valois King of France during the coronation ceremony he conducted on 17 July 1429. Honored guest Joan of Arc looked on as her chosen heir apparent became King of France. Baron Gilles de Rais, her comrade-in-arms and companion, stood beside her.
Regnault was Joan's ardent supporter and confidant throughout most of that part of her life in which she played a political and military leadership role in France. He accompanied her during several or more battles she fought, including the last one at Siege of Compiègne that led to her capture by Burgundians on 23 May 1430.
Regnault's half-brother, Earl William de Flavy, was present as the township's military commander during the Siege of Compiègne. He's alleged to have refused to issue the command to lower the drawbridge to prevent her from entering the walled fortress after she retreated from the battlefield. The Burgundians subsequently captured her as a result. William's alleged treachery is all the more treacherous as she brought her army there to rescue him and his community from being overrun by marauding Burgundians led by Philippe the Good, founder of The Order of the Golden Fleece.
It's almost certain that William was ordered to prevent Joan from entering the fortress after the well-choreographed battle she was lured into fighting. Regnault likely gave him that command, perhaps on pain of his and his family's death if he failed to comply. Since she fell into the hands, ultimately, of the Lancasters, it's almost certain, as well, that they originally instigated the plan to capture her. Her erstwhile supporter King Charles either aided and abetted the scheme, or turned a blind eye to it since he had struck a truce with the Lancasters several months before her capture. Moreover, he refused to pay the ransom the Duke of Burgundy supposedly demanded her release. As a result, she was remanded to the custody of Bedford after he paid the ransom demand (or bounty).
Joan's conviction of heresy and summary execution was little more than a fait accompli. Cardinal Beaufort, who oversaw her trial and conviction, was Bedford's paternal uncle. I believe the Lancasters plotted her to death well before she was brought to trial. Furthermore, as Regnault also served as Charles VII's ambassador to King Henry VI Lancaster several years before her capture, the French king was probably a co-conspirator.
William Shakespeare (a.k.a. Earl Edward de Vere) characterised Joan as a treacherous and evil witch in his play Henry VI, Part One. As such, she deserved to be burned at the stake according to her pathos, or lack thereof. It's nevertheless interesting to note this glaring example of English popular sentiment towards her over 150 years after her death. We can thus safely assume that the Lancasters held her in the same light.
William de Flavy's wife Blanche had him murdered at Nesles Castle many years after Joan of Arc's martyrdom. Not that there was much love lost between them at any time before or during their marriage, particularly since William always egregiously maltreated her, and caused the untimely demise of her father, Robert Daurebruche (1400 - 1436). However, had she had known the circumstances surrounding his betrayal, she may have spared him his life (or may not). In either case, as his fate would have it, he was damned if he did and, most likely, damned if he didn't.
This was a particularly interesting post to develop and write because I happened upon Earl William de Flavy purely by accident. At the time of his discovery, I was merely wandering through one of the mystical pathways of my ancestry when I came across him in one of my maternal lineage trees. There's no mention of him and Regnault in mainstream historical accounts of Joan of Arc, at least insofar as their complicity in the Lancaster conspiracy to capture and kill her is concerned. Be that as it may, I assess that they both played an important role in the last act of her life. He closed the door to life for her but opened the gates to Heaven, which she always professed as her destiny after a short lifespan.
So what did we learn from Joan's experience? Bottom line, her extraordinary religious zeal, and heroism mobilized peasant support for the Valois monarchy in their 100 Years War struggle like not even King Charles VI or his son, nor anyone else in their noble caste for that matter could have done in their wildest imagination. Unfortunately for her, after the expenditure of her political capital, she became a political liability for either side of the battle line. So was she a tool of tyranny or a saint? All I can say in response is that she started a socio-political movement in France that would generate an ever-increasing political influence that continues to this day. If you want to know just how much, look around France at her memorials and ask the French people what they think of her life in terms of her influence on French history and their lives as a result.
