Brzk Oh god. "On Thursday, October 14 from 6:30-7:45 p.m. LOIS McMASTER BUJOLD reads from a new Penric story. The reading includes a free reception and autographing.".Not quite a heart attack, but a flutter for sure. Won't attend. It will be positively lovely.

Jerri Is this a reading from a new to US Penric story, as in the eleventh? Or a reading from the most recent Penric story, as in Assassins? In any case, I wish I could be there, but it is not possible. I hope those lucky folks who can attend enjoy very much.

message 3: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Palfrey I'd interpret "a new Penric story" to mean "a not-yet-published Penric story", but I suppose there are various possible interpretations.

It is a not yet published, and not yet finished, Penric tale. No title, nothing yet to say about it.

I prefer to read from things my audience won't have already read, when I can.

Ta, L.

Carol Yay!

message 6: by Jerri (new)

Jerri Very good news. So we have something fresh to look forward to some fine day.

Now I wish even more that I could make it to Dreamhaven.

Jonathan Palfrey Lois wrote: "It is a not yet published, and not yet finished, Penric tale."

Excellent! Anyone able to attend the event will be fascinated. The rest of us can look forward to the result when it's finished cooking.

message 8: by Juli (new)

Juli The complete impossibility of attending aside, this is excellent news: it means there's another Penric in the works!

Are there any plans to convey the reading electronically in some form? Streaming, recording?

message 9: by Margaret (new)

Margaret So glad to hear another Penric tale is in the works!

message 10: by Sandy (new)

Sandy Will this be an all ages type excerpt reading, or no? I have an 11yr old developing writer who might benefit from attending such an event so I wonder.

Depends on what you mean by all ages. No porn, some medical grue. It's a not-quite murder mystery, what the ficcers are now calling a "casefic" and I would just call "a story".

Sandy, if your 11-year-old has already read some Penric stories, he should know what to expect. If not, I recommend it. Most of them are novellas and quite easy reading. The first of them, "Penric's Demon", introduces the world and the characters, although Penric is only 19 then; in the latest stories he's in his early 30s and married.

message 13: by David (new)

David Holmes Will this reading contain any spoilers for The Assassins of Thasalon, for those of us who haven't had the chance to read it yet?

Lois Bujold David wrote: "Will this reading contain any spoilers for The Assassins of Thasalon, for those of us who haven't had the chance to read it yet?"

Yes, some. It takes place the following year, but entirely in Vilnoc, with a local issue.

Ta, L.

message 15: by Brzk (new)

Brzk If we are all trying to gain a glimpse in that fantastic future event, may I ask what does "a free reception" mean? Could it perchance imply a free access, not free dinner at which you are the main guest? A ball? No, don't tell me it's a glass offered at the door and some sandwiches, thank you. Argh. Either way it's impossible.

Usually, it's whatever packaged cookies and sodas host Eric can afford to bring. And a bunch of mostly local fans standing/sitting around in a too-small space talking for a bit.

Yes, of course entry is free. It's a bookstore. They want people to come in and buy books...

:-), L.

Brzk Sounds ... perfect.

Softness That sounds fun!

...don't cell phones do that job these days...?

;-)

message 21: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Palfrey Just beam us up… preferably not from the bathroom.

message 22: by Daiv (new)

Daiv iPort is an app available on the latest version of iPhone. Alas, it requires a 8g cell network, and the latest updates on both ends. Also, it is currently more expensive than a last minute firstclass flight, 5 start hotel suite, and all support expenses.

Derek Peter Hawley You have no idea how tempted I am to get in my car and drive seven hours for this. It was an honor to meet you at Uncle Hugo's a few years back.

You all won't have that long to wait till the actual e-published story, so the long drive is possibly not worthwhile. I finished the first draft earlier this week, and Ron Miller is at work on an e-cover. 30k words before last revisions.

Still haven't finalized the title, though, a requirement for both Ron and me. Titles either come up and make themselves firmly known in the writing, or linger on elusively at the end. This is one of the latter. Current front runners are "Entanglements" or "Web of Sorrows", but something better may yet be lurking out there.

Ta, L.

Jonathan Palfrey "Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practise to deceive!" 🙂

message 26: by Jerri (new)

Jerri Sounds like we can expect this before Thanksgiving (in the US) with luck, certainly before Christmas. A nice ending to 2021. Looking forward to it, although the title ideas sound a bit depressing, hopefully some joy and laughter comes through in the end.

message 27: by Brzk (last edited Oct 14, 2021 10:36PM) (new)

I ended up reading The Assassins of Thasalon over the weekend so I could attend without spoilers. I'm glad I did!

message 29: by Jerri (new)

Jerri How I wish I could have been there. Glad you had a good time and acquired a treasure. Looking forward to the new Penric tale.
