Masquerade in Lodi is up

The new Penric & Desdemona novella; 9th written, but now 4th in internal chronology, which is going to engender the usual confusion among those who try to do numbered lists rather than more fungible title lists. I've tried to address this with both a note in the vendor copy and a frontnote in the e-text. We'll see.

Anyway. Vendor page copy reads:

"Bastard’s Eve is a night of celebration for most residents in the canal city of Lodi -- but not for sorcerer Learned Penric and his Temple demon Desdemona, who find themselves caught up in the affairs of a shiplost madman, a dangerous ascendant demon, and a very unexpected saint of the fifth god.

This novella falls between “Penric’s Fox” and “Penric’s Mission” in the internal chronology of the Penric & Desdemona tales."

May be found on:

iBooks: https://books.apple.com/us/book/masqu...

Kindle store: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08L88PCTP/

Nook: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/masq...

33,600 words, making it a mid-sized novella by the standard our-genre definition of "a story between 17,500 words and 40,000 - 45,000 words".

I'll set up a spoiler discussion space in a while in the next post; general discussion can go in the comments here.

PR side-note: these novellas always seem to get plenty of Amazon reviews, so mentions of their existence elsewhere-appropriate cast a wider net. (Somebody has to already have heard about a story to even be looking at a vendor page, after all.) As you are so moved...

Ta, Lois.

Brian Casey After purchase, I added this edition to StoryGraph...

Sandy Oh glee! Just the spot of bright news I needed, Thank you!! Already purchased. Hopefully soon a physical copy of "The Physicians of Vilnoc" will be available too. It is lovely to be able to leap ahead and read digital copies without having to wait for book versions, but I still love getting the actual books.

Ed Bear Thank you. I've sent a link to this to my "Usual Suspects" list.

Thanks, but what is Story Graph?

message 5: by Brian (new)

Brian Casey It's an alternative to GoodReads for tracking the books you read, getting book recommendations based on your reading history, and connecting with other readers. It's very usable now, but is still in Beta so there's some rough edges.

I read an article in the New Statesman by Sarah Manavis about some shortcomings she sees in GoodReads along with her review of Story Graph, so I gave it a try.

I'm not anti-GoodReads, but can appreciate some of the points she made about the user interface and its tight ties to Amazon. (I'm reluctant to post the link of an article bashing GoodReads on a GoodReads forum, but it's easy enough to find and an interesting read.)

Ari The real question-- to read it now, or wait to experience the audiobook so I can listen to the dulcet and most excellent tones of Grover Gardner? If it's anything to go by, it looks like the turn-around time to audio format for Physicians was only 3 months...

I say, Read it now, and then wait for the audiobook. By then it will have faded in memory a little. I find hearing the words to be such a completely different experience from reading them to myself: I always notice new things in the story when I listen.
(I freely admit to having a double-bias:
1) I dislike extended suspense, and 2) I find Lois' stories especially agreeable to re-visit multiple times.)

I strongly agree. I've read CoC many times, along with all of Miles, and have a couple of read thru's of the Sharing Knife series. Her writing style is especially readable, and you get additional insights (and enjoyment) each time through.

Mitali Ooh, excellent, a new Penric novella! That too, set in what seems to be the World-of-Five-Gods equivalent of Venice - sounds awesome! It's good timing too - I was planning to read Penric's Mission shortly, but if Masquerade in Lodi is chronologically before it, then I'll read that first. :)

Jerri Just purchased and downloaded. Looking forward to it. And, just realized that the Masquerade theme will be a great fit with Halloween coming up.

Harald It's raining cats and dogs where I live, so bad, that even the hunting dog doesn't want to go for a walk. But all's good, let me just put the kettle on, get a cup of tea, my kindle with the new novella, a sofa and a gently snoring dog and life is just perfect. Thank you!

Fergus I can't afford to buy many books etc. But I always buy LMB! Her writing is one of the great love affairs of my life!

NorthernStar Thank you! I'm feeling a little sleep deprived today, but enjoyed it thoroughly.

Rose Motion Thank you Lois! Now to find the Kindle which I think fell down the side of the bed while I tended to a few hardcopy books. Keep the Penric novellas coming! So much fun.

message 15: by Linda (new)

Linda Isaacs I'm a Nook user and I am very sad. Should I give up and go buy on Amazon? Or will it make it to Nook sometime soon?

It will make it to Nook; I have no idea when. I suspect B&N is still untangling their systems from the cyber attack last week. If it doesn't appear from the upload we made on Thursday by the time we do the corrections pass, we'll try uploading again, probably early next week.

If you don't want to wait, well, iBooks and Kindle are working at present. It's easy enough to download the free Kindle app onto most devices -- I have mine on my tablet, my laptop, and my phone all three -- and be underway shortly. There is no rule that you can only possess one reading device/app exclusively.

Ta, L.
