Dropbox?

So... I tried reviving an old Dropbox account to have a place to share pictures with the blog, since Goodreads has blocked any further uploads. However, it only appears to want to share with individual e-mails. It won't accept my blog addy as a valid destination. Anyone have any experience with this, or know a work-around?

Ta, L. Still visually impaired.

Jacob Proffitt This article explains how you can alter the dropbox shared link so that it can be used in an image tag. It's just a matter of replacing the www.dropbox.com with the user content domain. https://milanaryal.com/hosting-images...

Shane Castle You could use a SmugMug account for this, but it is not free. However, it is not very expensive, either. It can allow uploads and links to the images. Some forums and blogs will show the picture when you put the link in, I think (this is not something I have tried personally but I've seen pics online that were ultimately SmugMug pics).

I have put albums on SmugMug and then sent the links to them to others so they can see them.

Shane Castle Removed pic after successful test.

Talli Ruksas Have you considered Facebook? I have pages showing a few of my collections and anyone can see them and no limit to the pictures I can share.

Harsh Varia Have you looked into google drive... it allows you to share images publically on the web so you can host them on your site or goodreads.

My brain shorted out about two screens into the many screens of instructions, with all its unexplained tla's. I may try again later when I have more time.

Thanks, L.

No, did not know about google drive. May check it out -- is it free or paid?

Shane Castle It seems you get 15GB of space for free: https://www.google.com/drive/

I discovered that I had already activated it when I checked it; it had one of my images there in raw and jpeg form, dated Nov 22 2015. Not sure exactly why, now - maybe somebody wanted a copy?

But, the "photos" subsection of Google Drive is going away and they say to use "Google Photos" instead. That replaced the online Picasa component. It permits sharing with a link.

But, AFAICT neither of these permits resizing the image for the share - the image is always shared at full resolution.

message 9: by Terry (new)

Terry Austin Google Drive has a free version with up to 15 GB of space (and that's a lot of images). 100 GB is $3/month.

There's also a desktop app you can install that lets you move stuff on and off through a regular folder in Windows, rather than having to use the web interface.

You may have to experiment with which share settings work to embed an image in another web site. It's been a while since I've done that.

message 10: by Amelia (new)

Amelia Dropbox has a public folder by default usually. If you put your image there you can share the link anywhere.

Just a request for Facebook. I'm lazy. I like getting all my data from one place.

Mm, but I don't want to just share a link; I want the pix to appear in my original post.

I've been resisting Facebook. My posts here are hand-ported over to my fan-run Facebook page by some loyal fans, bless them, so I have a presence, but I actually like the smaller, book-oriented focus of Goodreads. Until this annoying image-restriction nonsense came up, I've had no problems here.

sigh, L.

Jerri And here is a plea NOT to post things exclusively on Facebook. Several authors I used to follow have stopped updating their web sites or blogs and rely exclusively on Facebook, and I can no longer easily follow their activities/plans. Facebook used to allow those without a facebook profile to view "public" Facebook pages run by/for folks like authors/bands/small businesses. But for some reason in the past several years it has been more and more difficult for a non-Facebook person to see these pages, they are blanked out by Facebook and they want you to sign in or sign up.

I do NOT want to expose myself to Facebook.

I love what you are doing on Goodreads, Lois, and hope you keep it up.

If you know what an <img> tag is, it's simply a matter of taking the share link you get from drop box and replacing "www.dropbox.com" with "dl.dropboxusercontent.com".

Shane Castle The best solution of course would be for the Goodreads image issue to be resolved. Of the suggestions seen, it would seem that the one most satisfying needs would be SmugMug, but that would not be a zero-monetary-cost solution. The cost is in the neighborhood of US$8/mo or thereabouts (more for more features). I suppose an argument might be made that it is tax-deductible, but you should consult your tax advisor before trying to claim it.

Lois, I don't know if you understand HTML coding at all and could construct an image inclusion reference (the "img" tag), but its use might be required for what you want to do. There are lots of online sources for education, if you want it. SmugMug offers a cut/paste solution for this HTML coding if you don't want to learn it.

Finally, I too am becoming discouraged with Facebook, although I am a participant (I recently posted a pic of high water along the Rhine), and so I am trying other things, hence SmugMug. But I really wish you'd get your Goodreads issue fixed. I like what goes on here.

That, alas, is not up to me. They broke it, I didn't.

Well, it looks like I finally figured out which of the many possible step-routes to making Dropbox cough up an image actually works, so if only I can replicate it, problem solved for the moment. See next post for results.

Aha. That one worked, this time.

Now I must hurry and write down how I did it...

Tracey I use Pinterest! There's no limit, no problem I know of with hotlinking, no bandwith limit I'm aware of - and it's free, and I'm on there anyhow. I created a private board for "used in posts". Seems ok so far!

Martha Tracey wrote: "I use Pinterest! There's no limit, no problem I know of with hotlinking, no bandwith limit I'm aware of - and it's free, and I'm on there anyhow. " Please not Pinterest! Image searches have become increasingly useless because of that dratted site. (You see an interesting image, you click on it, you get a Pinterest page that's mostly hidden by a "please sign in" box, you try to peek around it and click the interesting image... and you get another Pinterest page mostly-hidden by a "please sign in" box. At no point do you actually get more information about where the image came from.)

I'm with you. I despise Pinterest.

message 23: by Bob (new)

Bob Irwin I also despise Pinterest, I have tried it three times, and not again.

Facetime is a spider that wraps it web everywhere possible. For a private person, perhaps an issue, but for an author looking for as wide a contact base as possible, this is perhaps a good thing.

Free. That's what I use, too. You just set the folder to public, then share the link. To get that:
Right click, select Share.
Click Shareable link (in the upper right of the dialog box)
Click Copy Link.
Paste the link into your post.

message 25: by Michaeline (new)

Michaeline Duskova Is there any chance you can use your Amazon or Barnes & Noble stuff as the source for images? I mean, you post them on your Amazon account, then link the image on GoodReads to that account.

BTW, Martha, if you type "-pinterest" in your search, you get rid of the pinterest images that come up. I really loved Pinterest when it first came out, but I don't like logging in, and yes, the image clutter is terrible. Internet pollution in a lot of cases. Once in a while, gems (then I have to use some sort of reverse image search to find out where the pic came from!).
