Elaine Stock writes Historical Fiction, exploring home, family and friendships throughout time. She enjoys creating stories showing how all faiths, races, and belief systems are interconnected and need each other.

Elaine’s grandparents, on both sides of her family, narrowly escaped World War II by immigrating from Poland and Austria to the US. Fascinated by the strong will of people to overcome the horrors from this era, she wrote We Shall Not Shatter, Book 1 of the Resilient Women of WWII Trilogy, inspired by her deaf great aunt who was left behind as a teenager in Poland and perished in the Holocaust, while her other deaf siblings were permitted to enter the US when their young ages helped them to circumvent medically-revealing exams. This took some thinking! My most special moments as I write a story is when I reread a scene and it makes me cry... I hope if it has that much impact for me that it may also resonate with a reader.

As a debut novelist (I've had a couple of short stories published in anthologies prior to the release of Always With You) my most memorable moments--so far--are:
--having a laugh when I found it was difficult to articulate that my "story" is now a "book"
--discovering that someone in India is reading Always With You (just that someone in another country is reading my novel was a wow factor for me!)
--receiving a very lovely hand-written note from someone who greatly enjoyed Always With You.(less)

On my paternal side of the family, my grandfather, at the age of 7, immigrated with his parents from Brzeziny, Poland to America. Although he was hearing, a few of his siblings were deaf. All but one (the oldest) were young enough to dodge the more closer health inspections at Ellis Island. However, the oldest, a teen girl, was turned away and was sent back to Poland, never to be heard from or about again. She was likely in her young 40s when the Nazis invaded Poland and being Jewish and deaf, she likely perished in the holocaust slaughter. My novel, of course, is a fictionalized tale inspired by my deaf great aunt, as well as a love-letter to a once thriving Brzeziny. I hope it encourages many to love and respect one another.(less)

“The guilt is blazing within me like a fever. I hate lying about who I am and who I'm supposed to be. I'm torn up with guilt for denying my heritage and my native country while well aware of how so many people have suffered illness, torture, or death, or all three, because, like me, they failed to live up to Aryan standards”
Elaine Stock, We Shall Not Shatter

“Uncertain times brought out the best and worst in people. This was not the first time she'd behaved boldly. That was a positive aspect of being a deaf person in a hearing world - you had to have confidence, or at least, act in a fashion that led others to believe you were courageous. And she'd perfected her acting abilities a long time ago for the sake of survival”
Elaine Stock, We Shall Not Shatter

“That was what made friendship special, nearly sacred, and worth nurturing - understanding the other and accompanying them through good times and bad”
Elaine Stock, We Shall Not Shatter

“My #1 rule is write like no one is ever going to read it. Why? Because it gives you permission to be as audacious as you want.”
Tosca Lee

“Everything's a story - You are a story -I am a story.”
Frances Hodgson Burnett, A Little Princess

“There will be a time when you believe everything is finished. That will be the beginning.”
Louis L'Amour

“Things can be cleaned and replaced. Great moments cannot afford to be lost.”

Elaine Stock Christine, I've been busy between work, edits on my chapters for my agent, and my blog, but yes, I finally made it onto GoodReads. I still need to familiarize myself with this site. Step by step.

Christine Lindsay Hey, Elaine, glad to see you here at last.
