Book Review: When Death Draws Near by Carrie Stuart Parks

When Death Draws Near by Carrie Stuart Parks

Book Description:

Gwen Marcey takes death in stride. Until she’s faced with her own mortality.

Forensic artist Gwen Marcey is between jobs when she accepts temporary work in Pikeville, Kentucky—a small town facing big-city crime. But before Gwen can finish her first drawing of the serial rapist who is on the loose, the latest witness vanishes. Just like all the others.

Gwen suspects a connection between the rapist and the “accidental” deaths that are happening around town, but the local sheriff has little interest in her theories. When her digitally-obsessed teenage daughter joins her, Gwen turns her attention to a second assignment: going undercover in a serpent-handling church. She could get a handsome reward for uncovering illegal activity—a reward she desperately needs, as it seems her breast cancer has returned. But snakes aren’t the only ones ready to kill. Can Gwen uncover the truth—and convince anyone to believe her—before she becomes a victim herself?

In a thrilling race against time, When Death Draws Near plunges us into cold-case murders, shady politics, and a den of venomous suspects.

This was a ride, and a wild one at that. I am deathly afraid of snakes. I can’t look at stuffed animal snakes, cartoon ones, none of it. So I wasn’t sure how I would do with this book that tackles snake-handling in church.

I confess, I couldn’t read it at night. There was only one scene that was scary for me, but the thought of it made me read during the day, and I really enjoyed it. It is obvious the author thoroughly researched this book. The characters were so well-developed, especially Gwen. This is not the first book in her series, but it definitely can stand alone. I learned a lot about her. Single mom. Cancer Survivor. Forensic Artist.

I enjoyed her daughter working with her, and that I could not figure out why was good, and who was evil. As Gwen kept saying, “Trust no one.”

I hope you trust me, though. When Death Draws Near is a suspenseful plot I’ve never run across before that keeps you on edge. It’s dynamic, humorous at times, and full of action.  I definitely recommend it.

COTT: Interview with Clash Winner Susan Page Davis

This week, we’re pleased to feature the winner of the July Clash

of the Titles competition. Susan Page Davis is the author of more than

sixty published novels. She’s a two-time winner of the Inspirational

Readers’ Choice Award, and also a winner of the Carol Award, the

Will Rogers Medallion, and was a finalist in the WILLA Awards and the

More Than Magic Contest.

A Maine native, she now lives in Kentucky. Her historical romance The

Outlaw Takes a Bride is a finalist in the 2015 Will Rogers Medallion

Awards.

Her latest accomplishment is having her brand new June release, River

Rest, be chosen as the July Clash of the Titles victor.

We asked Susan to tell us a little about writing River Rest. Here’s what

she had to say.

CBA: What made you choose the setting for your story?

SPD: My great-aunt left a journal she wrote in the 1920s

and ’30s. It gave such a vivid picture of life in rural Maine that I

wanted to write a story in that setting. I decided to push it back to

1918, near the end of World War I, because of the added tension and also

because my grandfather (Aunt Belle’s brother-in-law) served in WWI. He

was drafted close to the end of the war, and I adapted some details of

his story to fit in for my heroine, Judith’s brother. River Rest is

purely fiction, but many of the events in it were inspired by things

that really happened in my family.

CBA: Do your characters have anything in common with real

people?

SPD: In real life, my grandmother (Aunt Belle’s sister) was

a schoolteacher before she married my grandfather. Judith has a lot in

common with both my Nana and Aunt Belle. She loves her bird feeder, she

learns to make quilts, and she cooks many of the same things my Nana

served. Her life on the farm is a lot like theirs was. I love Judith

because she keeps on, even when she is tempted to fall into depression

as her father did. She knows people are depending on her, so she

perseveres.

CBA: You mention your story was inspired by your great-aunt’s

journal. What’s the best thing you learned from reading what she

wrote?

SPD: My Great-aunt Belle, who wrote the journal, died in

1939, long before I was born. She was 55, and she died from

complications of appendicitis. I never got the chance to know her, and I

would love to be able to sit down with her for a cup of tea. As a side

note, I had acute appendicitis myself in 1985, and it was no fun then,

with modern medicine to help me out. Aunt Belle noted so many cultural

things in her diary—who she voted for, the famous boxers of the day, the

way the neighboring farm boys were building tractors out of truck

chassis, and all the community events and gossip. She never had children

of her own, but she doted on her nieces and nephews. I think I would

have loved her.

Thanks to Susan for her insights. You

may visit her at her website at: www.susanpagedavis.com .

River Rest by Susan Page Davis

River Rest sounds like an interesting read. Here’s more about the

book:

Unable to depend on her father to heal the crumbling family,

Judith is afraid to trust the mysterious neighbor, Ben, who lives with

his own grief.

Maine, 1918

Judith Chadbourne gave up her teaching job after her mother’s death

to help her father with her five siblings. But when her father sinks

into deep depression and her brother Joel is drafted, the household

chores and farm work may overwhelm her. Neighbor Ben Thayer offers to

buy their farm, shocking Judith and angering her father. An outsider

from New York, Ben seems rich and mysterious, but his heart aches from

his own loss. Judith accidentally breaks the antique crystal Christmas

ornament her mother loved. The splintering star echoes her family’s

shattering. Ben’s efforts to help make Judith suspicious, but when Joel

falls critically ill at the army camp, Ben’s aid brings the beginnings

of trust. After the armistice, and the community and family start to

recover from the strain of the war, but Judith learns independence is

lonely. When Ben is injured, she is the only one who can help him. Can

love take her beyond the frozen Maine winter?

If you’re into period romances, be sure to check this one out! A

plethora of people voted this into their TBR pile. You might want to

join them!

iBloom Life and Business Planner Available as FREE August Sample

This is what my iBloom Life and Business Planner Looks like.

Last month I shared how I was an iBloom lurker and this year took the plunge and bought the planner. I was so sold on it that when there was a call out for women to partner with iBloom, I wanted in.

The iBloom Life and Business Planner has been the one tool I keep using as I move forward as an author and speaker. As a wife and mom. Volunteer. Friend.

Great news is, you can try it for FREE the month of August!

iBloom Life & Business Planner Sample

The iBloom Life & Business Planner:

Has enough space for me to fill in all my tasks and activities

Has monthly accountability with goals, relationships, victories, and more

Weekly, monthly, half-year and yearly goals and how they are going. Space to dream and journal

When I first got my planner in the mail, the first thing I noticed was how organized yet comprehensive it is. Every aspect of my life is covered in the planner, but the planner is organized. I’m not overwhelmed, but inspired. I want to hit those tasks and mark them off, not the planner collect dust.

I wasn’t sure I would use the space above each week, but I do. I use that section to write out sermon notes. Already I’m going back to read them. At the bottom of each day is a box. I know some mark off their workout stats. I use it for business mileage. There is just so much to this planner, right down to a holiday guide to keep track of your purchases.

I hope you’ll grab your free sample of this planner while you can! Follow the link to download your August sample now.

Surrender Issues by Alice K. Arenz

Surrender issues?  Sorry, Julie, but surrendering chocolate is easy for me—not that I have given it up completely. If only that were true! Life issues . . . now that’s a different matter.

The first time I had to go in for surgery, I tried to bargain with the doctor for a way to remain awake. I wanted drugs to keep away the pain, just didn’t want to be zonked out. Even for this insomniac, being totally out of it, not IN CONTROL—I shudder even now to think about it. Of course, I lost and they put me out, but I was told in the recovery room that I woke up faster than anyone they’d ever had in there. No surprise to me. But it has continued to surprise nurses and doctors in subsequent years and other surgeries. Probably not a good thing. I’ve seen those reports where people have awakened in the middle of procedures. Yikes!

Now, surrendering to God with my writing is the only way I can write. Everything I do, from start to finish, is entirely dependent on what He wants me to do. I accept that. I’ve learned to stop and listen—even though it’s really hard sometimes. And, as with my latest book, not to fight Him when He has a purpose in mind. He told me it was time to stop preaching to the choir, that there would be some controversy over Portrait of Jenny, but He was here with me and I needed to trust Him. So I listened and obeyed.

In the middle of April, my husband lost his job—it wasn’t something we were prepared for. Who is? He’d been laid off nearly six years before, and that was one of the most frightening things we’d gone through.  No savings, a lot of debt, and with my health issues, no help from my quarter—but we kept our eyes on God and we got through with a little help from family and friends. The job he got paid a LOT less than what he’d been making before, but after 14 months, we were thankful for it. Now, here we were again, in our sixties—not as much debt, a little savings, but not nearly enough.

After six weeks and no bites, we had a decision to make—continue looking only in the area where we lived, or for him to branch out and apply to different areas of the country. All I could think about were my children and grandchildren, and wonder how I could move when sometimes it was hard for me to get from one place to another in our house. But hubby was sure God was calling us to not just trust Him to provide, but to surrender our will to His. These last few weeks have been some of the hardest in our life—my life. While the resumes and applications have gone out all over the country, my fears grew—so did my waistline! Phone interviews from one end of the country to another, a face-to-face two and a half hours away that lasted only twenty minutes! But in that prep time, in that quiet time, I’ve tried to surrender, tried to turn it completely over to God. To say, “Your will, not mine.” I’m still learning.

And hubby is still looking for that one job with God’s stamp on it.

Portrait of Jenny tiny_edited

Surrender Issues by Alice K. Arenz

Not even a beautiful woman can save Richard Tanner from his past.

Following an explosive—and public—argument with his ex-girlfriend, artist Richard Tanner races into a rainstorm, gripped by a powerful migraine. He wanders to the gazebo in University Park, where he meets the beautiful and mysterious Jenny—a brief encounter that leaves an indelible impression on his mind—and in his paintings.

When Detective Jack Hargrave accuses Richard of the brutal assault on his ex, he finds himself confronting demons of a past he doesn’t remember. A time when little Richie Tanner walked into University Park whole, was beaten and left to die…a time that may hold the key to his future.

Disclaimer: Although Portrait of Jenny contains a Christian message, there is profanity.

CHECK THIS OUT: Angel Beneath My Wheels by K.S. Moore

Julie’s Note: I love to introduce readers to new-to-them authors and books. Each month I try to accomplish that with the Check This Out feature. I hope you take a look at Angel Beneath My Wheels!

Bio: Kathryn Moore grew up working on cars with her father in Indianapolis and now lives in southwest Michigan with her husband, two children and a little Yorkie named Bear. She is a graduate of Purdue University where she studied information technology, engineering, and chemistry. When she’s not working, writing or serving in her local youth ministry, she enjoys the outdoors with family and friends.

Through her writing, Moore strives is to bridge the gap between Christian literature and mainstream best sellers, to depict contemporary Christians in real-life stories of love, drama, action and adventure, to show (not tell!) what it means to live a Christ-centered life in today’s culture, and to provide wholesome fodder for more family-friendly movies.

A prolific reader, she’s always enjoyed the escape of a really good book and four years ago decided to try her hand at writing one of her own. Her first book, Angel Beneath My Wheels, was released on February 29th, 2016. If you’d like to receive her monthly short stories called Touches, join her mailing list here.

Angel Beneath My Wheels by K.S. Moore

Angel Beneath My Wheels by KS Moore

Book Blurb:

Beneath his playboy façade, young NASCAR driver Luke Brandt yearns for a family. Rachel Tate, an inventive, purity-ring-wearing mechanical engineer, is determined to prove herself in a male dominated industry. When Luke outbids Rachel on the only two muscle cars she could use to test her new vapor-fueled engine, she wants nothing to do with him. But Luke’s gentle ways and down home country charm just might win her over—if his painful past doesn’t push her away.

When she begins to touch his heart, he’s haunted by bitter memories of the only woman he’s ever loved—the mother who abandoned him as a little boy. With an intense trust that God will lead her on life’s journey, Rachel perseveres, her innocence and grace breach his defenses and his walls begin to crumble. As they join forces to bring her remarkable invention to market, their love, their very lives, are threatened by the iron-tight grip that “Big Oil” holds over the whole auto industry and Luke realizes his final happiness must come through faith, in the One who has always loved him… and always will.

Angel Beneath My Wheels captivates you and takes you on an ages old journey of the potential to discover trust lost. Often hidden beneath the surface of our personas we create resides, in many of us, a need to trust once again, and in the process receive healing. Kathryn has written a wonderful and creative novel that will take you beyond fiction to fact… that trust is healing, and when built upon a foundation of faith in Christ, saving, and conquering.” ~ Billy E. Mauldin Jr., President and CEO, Motor Racing Outreach, co-author of The Race: Living Life on Track

Kathryn Sue Moore’s inspiring debut, Angel Beneath My Wheels, is brimming with romance, passion, and heart. With a spunky protagonist who can turn heads and change carburetors how cool is that?! Book Review: Missing by Lisa Harris

Missing by Lisa Harris

Nikki Boyd Enters the Deadly World of Counterfeit Drugs to Find a Missing Woman

Nikki Boyd isn’t usually called in on homicides; her forte is missing persons. But when a case with two murdered and two missing pops up on a quiet suburban street, she’s ready to start the investigation and find missing homeowners Mac and Lucy Hudson. When the first clues lead her to the boat of her friend Tyler Grant–and another dead body–Nikki must untangle what ties Tyler to the Hudsons. The clues pull her into a deadly maze of counterfeit drugs and a killer who will stop at nothing to silence anyone who threatens his business–including Nikki.

Christy Award-winning and bestselling author Lisa Harris puts readers right into the action in this fast-paced thriller that will have them turning pages long into the night.

Although this is Book 2 in the Nikki Boyd Files, I believe this could also be a stand-alone. Nikki’s called into a case that is close for comfort—her deceased best friend’s dad and husband are in the middle of a homicide and missing person’s case. Not only does Nikki have to get to the bottom of it, she has to fight her growing feelings for the handsome widower.

I love this series and Missing is just as good as Vendetta. There’s great suspense filled with emotion. Nikki is a strong heroine who carries the book and series well. I felt there was great conflict and action, but she wasn’t a cardboard character. She had emotions and fears without compromising her job. I also enjoyed the role Tyler plays. Is he part of the crime? Can he be trusted? Is it wrong for Nikki to feel the way she does about him? All these things kept me turning the pages, and I felt more than satisfied at the conclusion.

If you love action, suspense, crime, and a touch of romance, I believe you’ll be more than satisfied with MISSING, too.

The Comfort of Full House and Wind Chimes

The words for my 2016 are perspective and fierce. Perspective has kept me in check through transition I never saw coming. Fierce? I’m not feeling it, but I’m still reflecting on it.

With the year more than half over, we’ve hit a lot of those stress lists where counselors tell you to only endure one or two. We’ve…

-Had two major job changes

-A wedding

-A graduation

-Two book releases

-Health stuff

and last week, Tom’s dad passed away.

If I had not survived a season similar to this, I’d be reeling. I’m hanging on to God’s word, praying a lot, letting tears come, being honest with my feelings and watching Full House.

Not the re boot, but the original. Early in the summer we ditched cable and a friend knew our daughter loves Full House. He gave her every episode on DVD.

Every.

Episode.

You know that show lasted 8 seasons, right?

That means there is a lot of Uncle Jesse.

Funny thing is, a lot of times I’m in the same room when our daughter is and that’s what she has one. At first I was annoyed because I watched it as a teen real time, then as a step-mom when kids visited, then as a nursing mom, and now with her. I know the episodes. I can tell you the next line and what actors played two different characters. I know this show.

And as the summer goes on, I realize when I have the opportunity to turn off the television, I let it play.

Because with such a topsy-turvy year, the show is comforting.

It’s wholesome and light, even with a single dad and girls who miss their mom. There is love and family. Commitment. Laughter.

Full House and Wind Chimes

Full House and Wind Chimes

We also received kind gifts as we grieve. Tom’s work gave us customized wind chimes that play the opening measures to Amazing Grace. I hung them out on our deck and the chimes are so soothing. As I tended to a little crisis outside, the chimes kept me calm.

It’s the little things, isn’t it?

There’s nothing big to take away from this post, just a confession that Full House isn’t driving me crazy but actually helping. Wind chimes soothe me.

What everyday items help you when things are going crazy around you?
