The Hourly Taunts
Yesterday I shared over at Christians Read that years ago I struggled with what I knew was a call on my life. It’s not only come to pass, it’s more specific.
I gave advice on how to avoid taking over and failing because we are not equipped.
What I didn’t say is how hard I’m struggling.
Early on I was so guilty of trying to save everyone. It never worked because that isn’t my job, and my health took a hit. A friend said, “Keep it up and it will kill you.” I have to hand the burdens over to Jesus. He fights for me. For the women I pray for. Not only does it have to be enough, it IS enough.
This year, even with that wisdom, I have been overcome with how unequipped I am. I battle guilt. I want to have the answers, the resources, the magic wand when they reach out to me. But the call isn’t any of those things. I’m only to pray and say as I feel I’m supposed to.
And guess what?
The silence is deafening.
He doesn’t want me to do a lot of talking right now.
In its wake, come the taunts. It’s not God’s voice and it isn’t mine. It’s the true defeated one, the one with so limited resources that he’s trying to convince me I’m the defeated one.
And it is a battle, my friends.

The hourly taunts drive me to prayer.
Surrendering not to the defeat but the taunts is draining. I’m a girl that wants to know why, and often with this prayer thing comes two things I hate and grieve, and deal with often. Loneliness and rejection.
Those things have been so intense this year I’ve thrown myself on the ground and just cried it out. I’ve realized there is power in tears, those are prayers that transcend language and I’ve got to get it out.
But it takes a lot out of me.
And once it subsides, I want to process it. Is it something I’m going through for my own life, something within our family? Because this has been a year I feel like those are critical prayers where my voice is the only one. Is it for those I’m standing in the gap for? Because never before have I had so many women coming at once with heartbreaking needs that hurt to hear. I hate hearing women are hurting. I see so much potential and most of these situations are strong women believing maybe not today, but someday they won’t just survive, but thrive. If I have to go through the valley for them, I’d do it. But not knowing the why I am having these times is hard.
Trust me, there is a lot of good stuff going on. We pressed in hard for our son to find steady employment and gradate from high school. The Lord gave us a picture of what his life looks like to Him and it is happening. It’s a beautiful thing. Our daughter is enjoying a good stretch of health after a rough spring. I’m finally okay with my husband’s job change and working from home. There are two books out with my name on the front that God is using to speak to women. Those are amazing praises.
But I’m the one that vowed to talk about surrender and make sure before I challenge anyone else, I’m doing it first. To be authentic even if no one else wants to hear it, or understand. So here I am. Maybe I’m waving in your imagination. Maybe I’m collapsed on a rug with a mouth full of chocolate and tears. Whatever you see, I’m all in.
And by faith, I have to believe that’s got the gates of hell shaking.

Book Review: The Life We Never Expected by Andrew and Rachel Wilson
The Life We Never Expected by Andrew and Rachel Wilson
BOOK DESCRIPTION:
What do you do when hard or painful circumstances turn your world upside down, resulting in a life you never expected? Andrew and Rachel Wilson grappled with this question after both of their children were diagnosed with regressive autism. Refreshingly honest, this book explores the highs and lows of raising children with specials needs, reflecting on the broader question of how to cope with suffering of all kinds. Sharing personal stories from their lives and encouragement rooted in the truth of God’s Word, Andrew and Rachel highlight lessons they’ve learned related to fighting for joy and thriving in the midst of trials—ultimately pointing readers to Christ, the One who promises to make all things new.
The book starts out with transparency as Rachel shares their vacation experience. With each mishap and missed injury or worse, Rachel reminds herself to breathe. With that honesty, I’m captivated and I join her and her husband as they share their story. They have two children with special needs. They use their own stories, great visuals (I love explaining their situation is like receiving an orange for dessert when everyone else gets chocolate,) Scripture and thoughts that provoke the reader beyond the last page.
They are upfront that although their story is about their children, the book is for anyone looking for hope, and I believe that. It was easy to partner with their story and find the hope to cling to. When they admitted this is the book they needed, I agree with them. When our daughter was first diagnosed with special needs, I saw a lot of academic type books, but none that addressed the million thoughts I had racing in every direction at all times. Although I’m a few years past that time, I still found the book refreshing. I felt less alone.
I absolutely recommend THE LIFE WE NEVER EXPECTED. In fact, I have one to give away (please remember if you comment, leave an email where I can reach you.) Please tell me why you should have this book. I’ll pick a winner July 5th.
“Disclosure (in accordance with the FTC’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising”): Many thanks to Propeller Consulting, LLC for providing this prize for the giveaway. Surrender to Peace by Rose Allen McCauley
Surrender to Peace by Rose Allen McCauley
Surrender to Peace is the title of my latest contemporary romance set in lovely Puerto Rico, and it is also something I think Christ taught all Christians to do when he said to “take up your cross daily.” This quote is mentioned in three of the four gospels, so I think it is definitely something Christ wants us to emulate. Just as Jesus prayed, “Not my will, but Thine” in the Garden before he left to be tried and nailed to a cross, (Matt. 26:39) we all need to give up our own wills to the Father in all things.
At the beginning of the story, my character, Joy Worth, has just flown to Puerto Rico on her “un-honeymoon” after she was jilted a week before her wedding. As she has more time to think and pray in this tropical paradise, she comes to realize she stopped listening to God’s Spirit months before when she became engaged to a guy who wouldn’t even go to church with her. Was that the turning point in her relationship with God? She spends her time touring the lovely island and reading her Bible and praying to hear His Voice again.
I hope you will read the rest of the story to find out her journey to surrender. And to learn more about this beautiful island which is an American commonwealth. Some of the reviewers have said they felt like they were touring the island with Joy and Benigno, her Christian guide.
Happy reading, and happy surrender because that is the only way to be truly happy!

Surrender to Peace
About Surrender to Peace:
Joy Worth arrives in Puerto Rico on her honeymoon trip–without her ex-fiancé. On a tour, she meets Park Ranger Benigno Arroyo.
On several more outings, he shows her the joy of living through the beauty of his beloved island. She begins to hear God’s voice again.
Joy so loves the island she decides to stay. Benigno falls in love with Joy but realizes her pain is still fresh. Joy loves him but doubts her judgment.
Can Benigno Cook earn her trust and love while helping her learn to hear God’s still, quiet voice again?

A
beautifully spun story about the power of second chances. ~ Amazon
Reviewer
I loved The Bitterroot Bride! The part where she compares
church
to riding a trot made me laugh out loud. ~A.
Chatman

About the book:

prostitute. Men are coming out of the woodwork to stake a claim on the
miner’s widow. They wanted her body before. Now they want her money. Hiring

way to freedom…or is it? Can she leave her past and build a new
future?

Chat with Angela:
Ques: We heard there was something special that happened to you
while writing your fourth book in the historical romance series, Montana
Beginnings. What was special about the Bitterroot Bride heroine for
you?
Angela: Writing Miss Emmie learning to read became an amazing
experience. Though I’d learned to read at four, I didn’t understand how to
connect and read people until well into my adulthood. So while Miss Emmie
became proficient in reading, I became proficient in relationships. She’d
eat up every book she could get her hands on and studied with intensity. I
did the same thing, but about relational topics.
Ques: When did you realize the parallel character arc had so much in
common with your real life?
Angela: About halfway through the first draft an epiphany happened.
I stopped, took a day or so to really think about my personal experience,
then began an intentional focus on writing the emotional parallel.
Ques: What do you hope Bitterroot Bride does for readers?
Angela: I hope this story is both entertaining and encouraging. I’d
like readers to absorb the idea that like Miss Emmie and me, if you have
the desire to learn something then you can. Age doesn’t matter.
Ques: Can you tell us the titles and a little about the Montana
Beginnings series?
Angela: All four titles are set in Helena, MT from 1889 – 1895. It’s
right when we became a state, but mining couldn’t support us forever. The
Debutante Queen introduces us to Calista who steals an orphan off the
street to protect her from a cruel master. Eleven Pipers Piping brings
forward the newsies, newspaper boys and orphan train leftovers, into
Mirielle’s classroom. Then in Taking the Plunge, Delphina takes us back to
the iconic Broadwater Natatorium as a swim instructress. Then Emmalee
enters the scene as we find out how Montana chose her state flower. Each of
these lovely Victorian ladies finds her true love while carving out a
meaningful life in Montana’s frontier.

Celebrate Summer with a FREE and .99 Read!
NOTE: If you receive this blog via email, the sale might already have started.
Although Ohio has seen 90+ temps already (and snow in May,) it is now summer. One of my favorite things to do is watch our daughter swim and have a book on the deck.
And now, I want to put a couple books in YOUR hands.
If you enjoy the feel of a “real” book, I priced ENTRUSTED and ENTANGLED so you could buy both and spend less than $20. Typically, you would see a full length novel sell for $15 each. I believe that much in these stories getting to people and changing lives.

“You need to go home, city-girl. You don’t belong.”
Jenna Anderson, sassy city-girl from Youngstown, Ohio, plows–literally–into Adirondack village, Speculator Falls, with a busted GPS and a determination to fit in as the newest resident. She wants to live a life without regret and make a difference. Moving to become the senior center director is the biggest risk she’s ever taken, and she believes her ideas are worth investing in. The senior citizens have been hurt by the last director, so Jenna has to work hard to earn their trust. When they embrace her, she thinks it’s time to show the seniors she intends to stay and make the center beautiful for them.
Town councilman and grocer Ben Regan is as broken as the flower box Jenna demolished. He’s grieving from the double loss of his grandfather’s passing and his former girlfriend leaving town without saying goodbye. His grief is so strong he wants to shut down the senior center before there’s too much change and heartbreak. Re opening the senior center and hiring a new director was never his plan. Jenna isn’t a Speculator Falls local and she has too many plans that will cost money the village doesn’t have. She’s too excited about his dream to expand the store his grandfather built. The harder he tries to keep Jenna at a distance, the more they are thrown together to work on community projects. They build a slow relationship, but the council needs to vote on the senior center’s future. Can Jenna show Ben both her and the center are worth trusting?
About ENTANGLED:

ENTANGLED will be .99 ebook Monday and Tuesday.

“You need to leave me alone. It’s the least you can do.”
Carla Rowling has been given her dream of attending cosmetology school. The gift is so generous she feels unworthy because of choices she made as a teen. The pressure mounts as Carla juggles school, is a single mom, helps her best friend Jenna plan her wedding, spends time with boyfriend Will Marshall, and deals with the fact that her son’s father is back in their lives.
Will Marshall is the one Speculator Falls resident everyone can count on. His truck deliveries are reliable. He’s the first to help friends like Ben Regan with boat work or be a card partner with Bart Davis. Will’s ready to settle down with Carla, loving her is natural. He’s bonded with her son, Noah. But when Carla starts cosmetology school, she puts emotional distance between her and Will.
Can Carla release her past and create a future full of highlights, or, will she burn her options worse than a bad perm?

Excuse Me, But Do You Validate by Sherri Stone
Excuse Me, But Do You Validate?
“For in Him we live and move and have Our being.” Acts 17:28
I’ve been a social worker for over twenty years and many times I have said it’s not just a job, it’s who I am. At no time was that more true than when I worked for hospice. I love hospice. A small group of us used to say if you cut us we’d bleed hospice. I poured myself into it for years, and I have the scars from burnout to prove it.
You may know that feeling. You may have a job that fits you like a glove. It’s what you were born to do. Feels good doesn’t it? Until it doesn’t.
There’s a danger in drawing your identity from your work instead of your Creator. For one thing it’s an identity built on shifting sand. Companies go out of business or go bankrupt. They downsize. Sometimes they bring in terrible leaders that make it impossible for you to stay. You could get sick or hurt or burned out and have to leave. You could relocate when your husband gets a transfer or promotion. You are a cog in a machine, important but not irreplaceable. What happens when that validation goes away?
If I can’t do (fill in the blank) then who am I?
That kind of self-doubt gives the enemy a foothold in your spirit that will wreak havoc in every square inch of your life. It sends you scrambling to find meaning and purpose like the old country song says, “in all the wrong places.”
A second danger is that we can easily forget that our job – whatever that is – is a mission field. The skills we use every day are gifts from God given to us with a purpose: to be salt and light to a world without Jesus. That is the higher calling no matter what we do to pay the bills. It is also a reminder that even on days when we feel useless, God is quietly using us in ways we may never know.
It is in the identity of that higher calling that we find the freedom and grace of Christ for our lives.
~No matter what kind of mistakes we make at work and how mad the boss gets, God’s opinion of us never changes. He is never surprised or disappointed by us.
~He delights in us because he knows the finished, perfectly polished, women we will be when he is finished with us.
~Getting our validation from Christ leaves us free to be humble and teachable when we are not slaves to what others may think about us.
~It frees us from the legalism of perfectionism.
~It keeps our perspective in check. In the end it really is just a job.
~Our work may go away but our purpose never does.
~It frees us from the erroneous belief that busyness is next to godliness. You will never read a scripture that says, ‘work harder and know that I am God.’ On the contrary, you will hear him tell you to be still and know him. Commune with him. Hear him.
~Knowing our identity is in Christ gives us a healthy boundary between what we do and who we are. That boundary enables us to live a more balanced life as we understand the importance of play, fellowship, listening to others, and sometimes just being still with Jesus.
Who you are is so much more than what you do. You are a daughter of the King. His uniquely made, uniquely gifted, uniquely placed warrior woman who will be sent off to do battle in many different places in the course of your lifetime. Your tasks may vary, but if you are paying attention and deliberate every day in your walk with the Lord, you will see that the one constant through every battle is the One you serve.
Pray for God to open your eyes to who you are in him. It is a prayer he will be delighted to answer for you. Stay in prayer and in the Word. Protect yourself every day from an enemy who would be tickled pink for you to miss this.
In Him you live, and move and have your being. Now go and live in the grace and freedom of that!
