COTT: The Babel Conspiracy by Sylvia Bambola

The Babel Conspiracy by Sylvia Bambola, was the first book I’ve read

from this author. It will not be my last… it is very well written and at

times, you won’t want to put it down. Looking forward to reading more of

this talented author!

The Babel

Conspiracy

by Sylvia Bambola

About the Book:

The Babel Conspiracy is a tale of intrigue and love. Two women engineers

struggle to develop the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft amid ever

intensifying global terrorism and muddled personal lives. Trisha Callahan

has an abiding faith in God, and “those roots of middy blouses and pleated

skirts, prayer books and incense-filled churches went deep.” This faith is

tested when she finds herself in love with a married man. Audra Shields

sees herself as a modern Lady Chatterley, “liberated but not forsaking

breeding, intellect, or femininity.” When she becomes involved with a

dangerous stranger, she begins to question her lifestyle.

Both women try sorting out their personal problems while racing the clock

to finish a project fraught with sabotage and murder. And who’s behind it

all? When the Department of Homeland Security and the Mossad finally figure

it out, the answer surprises everyone.

What readers are saying:
“It has been quite a long time since I have read a book such as this one,

one so pertinent to today’s landscape of life. The author has written an

excellent novel that could have been pulled from tomorrow’s headlines –

from both political and scientific advancement points of view. . . . I

highly recommend this book for those who love intrigue, suspense, fiction,

and a little bit of romance. The book is well paced, has plenty of action,

and good character development.” Rachel Helms

“The Babel Conspiracy by Sylvia Bambola is a very thought provoking novel

about the way that things could be in the U.S. in the near future. We need

to humble ourselves before the Lord and pray for America in these perilous

times. The characters were well developed and the story shows God’s love

and redemption.” Linda Rainey

Adventures in Odyssey Summer Challenge 2016

This summer, you can join Adventures in Odyssey’s Clubhouse Magazine and help children in the Middle East go to school and learn English. It’s Adventures in Odyssey’s Clubhouse Magazine Exercise to Educate summer challenge!

Screen Shot 2016-06-03 at 6.01.34 PM
The Problem

Nearly 7,000 miles away from the United States, there’s a war going on in the country of Syria. Many families have been forced from their homes. Parents have had to leave their jobs, and children have had to leave behind toys and friends.

Many of these families now live in refugee camps in nearby countries. They have tents instead of houses. Clean water is hard to come by. This war has put 2.6 million children out of school – some for more than four years already.

The Solution

Our friends at Focus on the Family Middle East know many families who don’t have the money to buy a school uniform and pay for their children to go to school. They also know people who would love to teach children English in local churches.

You may not have a lot of money to help, but you probably have time, energy and excitement. Here’s what you can do:

1. Go to to Whitsend.org/summer.

2. Print a sponsor sheet and exercise to earn points. You can do it for a week or the whole summer – just remember, the more you exercise, the more points you’ll earn!

3. Ask your family and friends to sponsor your efforts.

4. Beginning in July, tell us how you did and receive a digital bundle from your friends at Adventures in Odyssey and Focus on the Family. The deadline to submit your information is August 31, 2016.

For participating and submitting your information, you will get a free Adventures in Odyssey episode from Album 51. You will also get 101 Surefire Ways to Strengthen Your Child’s Faith – eBook and the audio book of Imagination Station #1, “Voyage with the Vikings.”

Make the most of your summer—exercise for your health and help other kids in need while you do!

Surrender Story: It Isn’t About You, but Now It Is

This is one of those posts that isn’t fun to write because it takes me back to a time I didn’t love and of course, I don’t come out looking too great in it. But I know I’m supposed to share it, and I believe it will encourage someone out there.

Our newlywed years weren’t normal or easy.  I had chronic pain because of a severe case of PCOS. There were many days I was in bed because of pain as soon as I got home from work. I had to receive shots in the backside that were not easy to give or receive. And then there was the baggage.

I came into the marriage with low self esteem and huge trust issues. I was a wounded person who usually felt better wounding others.  It wasn’t a good place.

My husband worked a new job with a lot of hours. He was in community theater. We were new in our church and wanted to be active there together. We grieved his kids not living in the same state anymore and trusted God had them and us.

When he had a bad day from any of these stresses or even something else, I had one thought and one thought only.

It’s me.

I’m the reason he’s upset.

It’s my fault.

It will always be me.

It will always be my fault.

When he needed time to chill, I took that as a personal rejection. I didn’t get that men need their cave time. When he’s ready to talk, he will. But my own emotional baggage couldn’t allow me to see that. So I’d chase him down, causing more stress.

And guess what?

Marriage-When It isn't About You, but then It Is

Marriage-When It isn’t About You, but then It Is

It wasn’t about me until I made it about me. And that’s when real conflict started.

I had a lot of problems then, and a big one I didn’t realize was one I think a lot of young women are also dealing with: you want your husband to be your savior.

Sorry, ladies, he can’t. He’s human and he’s going to fail. The harder you pursue him with that expectation, the faster he’s going to retreat. I tell you from experience. Then your pain is that much stronger because you’ve got another man in your life who has rejected you.

How did I get out of that spiral? It wasn’t easy or fast. I had to hit a rock bottom and realize even when his bad day wasn’t about me, I had a lot of healing to take care of. I had people praying. I read a lot from Chuck Swindoll to Sheila Walsh. I went through two Bible studies that changed everything—Believing God by Beth Moore and Captivating by Sheila Eldredge. I started to see my Savior was there to rescue me, He is Jesus, not my husband. And when I put that in the right order, everything changed.

My view of a Heavenly Father wasn’t healthy because I was envisioning someone with closed arms disappointed in me. Pressing in through my relationship in Christ and giving Him everything about me re wired my thinking. God’s arms are open wide even when I goof up and it is about me.

Now that I’m healed from those hurts, I don’t rely on my husband to be the source of all my happiness. I have the discernment to know when he’s having a bad day when to approach and when to wait. I no longer have those internal alarms going off thinking he’s upset with me.

If this is a struggle for you, I pray something in this post gives you hope to seek healing as well. If you are not part of a Bible reading, Christ centered church, I pray you find one and surround yourself with people who can pray for you. I’m rooting for you!

How to Survive a Graduation Party

I’d love to title this post how to survive releasing two books, a wedding and a grad party, but I fell apart in the middle of it physically, spiritually, well, in just about every way.

I had a wise friend (and a 2015 graduate) give me tips on graduation, specifically, the party, and here’s what we did. We didn’t just survive, but had a great time.

We had our party the day before actual graduation. It was a risk because it was Memorial Day weekend, but we had two things going for us: family was in town for graduation anyway, and we were so early into party season we avoided grad party burnout. I think our guests did as well.

2.   We had a basket of envelopes for guests to write their mailing address on. Our wise friend said she had not done this, and it took her a lot of time to track addresses down. Our graduate wrote a personal note asking for the addresses so he could write a personal thanks.

may2016gradfavors

Pinterest and Dollar Tree helped us survive graduation.

3. Three words. Dollar Tree/Pinterest. Pinterest gave us the idea to hand out favors of Nerds and Smarties, LOL. Make sure you physically hand them out. We left them on the gift table and no one had any. Pinterest also gave us the idea of the grad hat card box. My mom made it and it was a huge hit.

Dollar Tree was like Christmas for my husband. When I ordered the balloons, he couldn’t believe it. “You ordered them for $1 each?” “And they fill them with helium?” Yes and Yes. They also had all the tablecloths, decorations and was across the street from our party when we needed something fast. Sam’s provided a lot of the paper products. It was a sundae bar, so it was easy to serve and clean up.

We also didn’t have it at the house. We live 30 minutes from church and our friend said it is easier to have it at a place on church property. It’s not far for people to travel and you don’t have to worry about your house. I never thought we’d be as busy as we were, so this worked so well. It was a modest fee and they did all the set up and take down.

We provided disc golf, bocce, and we were loaned corn hole for outdoor fun. Our son loves board games, so the centerpieces were board games on every table with a placeholder of his pictures through the years with trivia about him on the back, all laminated.

I’m the worst with decorations but I had a lot of help hanging things. Pinterest to the rescue with making the balloons fancy. We printed pictures of our grad through the years and stapled them to the balloon strings. It really looked festive. Make sure your paper isn’t too heavy, though.

That’s it. Soak it in and enjoy. It’s a huge achievement and you want to remember it.

I’d love to hear how your graduation went.

Finally Available: Entangled: Surrendering the Past

It was a story I never meant to write, and I struggled every word. When I finally felt I had a decent plot together and tackled it, I came up thirty thousand words short.

Yep. Thirty. Thousand. Words.

Even after I finished, something still felt off. Not wrong, just off. Once I started pressing in, I realized it was a stirring. Eventually Entangled became the first new release from my own Surrendered Scribe Media.

Yep. This crazy year, I obeyed God’s call to start my own business where I encourage audiences to find freedom through surrender.  I’ll accomplish it through speaking and fiction. My Surrendering Time series is my first fiction.

Yep. God knew what He was doing. Already the feedback is coming in that Entangled is helping readers see they need to let go of guilt or choices that are holding them back. That story I was ready to give up on is being used to help people.

Wow.

Because May was so busy, so far it is only on Amazon, but for print, I will probably make it available a few more places. Whether or not you have a Kindle, my version for Kindle is readable on a free app for your tablet, phone, etc…

Here’s what Entangled is about:

Entangled is now available on Amazon.

Don’t Miss This: Karla by Sharon Srock

Karla Black had everything she ever wanted until the night tragedy tore her world apart, stealing her husband and her identity in one vicious twist. Twelve months later Karla is a shadow of the woman she used to be, struggling through her grief, living with bankrupt emotions, and resisting any suggestion that God might give her a second chance at love.

Ian McAlister was a helpless bystander as breast cancer took his beloved wife from him one breath at a time. As days of grief turn into months, Ian begins to dwell on the vow she elicited from him before her death. Promise me that you won’t grieve for too long. But how will he know when it’s time?

Two broken hearts, two futures destroyed by death, until a chance meeting in an unexpected place kindles a friendship between Karla and Ian that rockets into a romance neither one anticipated. Can they overcome their grief and the objection of family members to grab onto the surprising future that God has for them?

Chat with the author:

How do you connect with God best?
I love

listening to the Lord speak into my heart during worship.

Which Christian author has influenced you the

most?

I have

been a fan of Allison Pittman’s work for years. Even more amazing, The

Christian Communicator assigned my novel All

That Glitters
to her for editorial. Her encouragement and insight

helped me

develop as a writer and take the leap toward publication.

Are your books only for Christians or would other

people also enjoy them?

My books

definitely embrace a Christian worldview; however, the settings and

characters

are memorable enough for anyone who enjoys a good read.

About the author:
Lisa Flickinger lives in the shadow of the Rockies with her husband Matthew

and their dog Zeke. When not writing or reading, you will find her combing

antique shops, walking in the woods, or sipping a latte with friends. All

Book Review: In Times Like These by Gail Kittleson

In Times Like This by Gail Kittleson.

Pearl Harbor attacked! The United States is at war. But Addie fights her own battles on the Iowa home front. Her controlling husband Harold vents his rage on her when his father’s stroke prevents him from joining the military. He degrades Addie, ridicules her productive victory garden, and even labels her childlessness as God’s punishment. When he manipulates his way into a military unit bound for Normandy, Addie learns that her best friend Kate’s pilot husband has died on a mission, leaving her stranded in London in desperate straits. Will Addie be able to help Kate, and find courage to trust God with her future? This extraordinary literary writing classically captures the mindset of the 1940’s. Addie and her friend Kate reflect the voices women hear as they face confusing dilemmas even seventy-five years later—my first read kept me up into the wee hours. I will refer my readers to In Times Like These! Patricia Evans, Author of The Verbally Abusive Relationship, Controlling People and other books listed at www.VerbalAbuse.com

Gail Kittleson transports the readers back to WWII with Americans Addie and Harold. The war affects everyone in the country, and in Iowa, Harold wants to join the cause and fight the Nazis. However, he’s not able to, and the rejection makes him bitter. He takes his anger out on Addie with verbal wounds.

Addie’s best friend, Kate, is in London. The two write and share their hurts through letters. The letters give Addie strength in a time where abuse was not defined.

I really enjoyed In Times Like These. I really felt like I was in this part of history, WWII. It’s not easy to write a historical, much less a character who does hurtful things even though we understand his pain. Also not easy is to craft a friendship and evolve characters through letters. Gail Kittleson makes all these things seem effortless, and for that, it’s a page turner.

I highly recommend you set aside some time and go back to WWII with Gail Kittleson and In Times Like These. You won’t regret it.

I received In Times Like These in exchange for an honest review.

Book Review: Bearing Witness by Charles E. Moore and Timothy Keiderling

Book Review: Bearing Witness

Book Review: Bearing Witness

About Bearing Witness: Stories of Martyrdom and Costly Discipleship

From the stoning of Stephen in the first-century Jerusalem to Nigerian Christians persecuted by Boko Haram in 2015, these stirring accounts will inspire greater faithfulness to the way of Jesus, reminding believers what costly discipleship looks like in any age.  Bearing Witness brings together dozens of accounts from around the world of Christians who gave witness to their faith in the face of intense persecution, even if it costs them their lives.

In selecting stories for this book, the editors focused on Anabaptist martyrs and others who suffered for their commitment to believer’s baptism and nonviolence.

Bearing Witness is a powerful reminder, especially in light of how fast things are changing around us, the high price many before us have paid to follow Jesus. Although many stories were familiar to me, I learned quite a bit. The stories are full of history, but not too academic. The stories span the globe and are filled with names you’ll recognize, and those you won’t. I finished the book resolved not to take my faith for granted.

I believe readers will appreciate Bearing Witness for the same reasons.

I received Bearing Witness from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
