Love Your Spouse Challenge, Day 5

All this week I’ve been sharing my posts from the recent Facebook Love Your Spouse Challenge. My prayer is I encourage you with a realistic look at marriage. That you can choose oneness and isolation and beat the odds. I believe in you!

LOVE YOUR SPOUSE CHALLENGE, Day 5

This picture is from a cruise we took to Mexico to celebrate our 15th anniversary. From infertility to nearly losing a child to death of a parent and lots of transition, we had overcome so much that should have divided us. Anything we learned came from the FamilyLife Marriage Conference, something we attended as an engaged couple. The biggest principle we still work to apply is to choose oneness. Any relationship has two choices—isolation or oneness. Marriage has to operate in oneness. This was a celebration trip for sure.

Love Your Spouse Challenge, Day 4

This week I’m sharing my posts from the recent Facebook Love Your Spouse Marriage Challenge. Beyond the pictures, I wanted to be transparent with our story. Perhaps you can relate and need encouragement. I hope this blesses you today!

Love Your Spouse Challenge, Day 4

Love Your Spouse Challenge, Day 4

Love Your Spouse Challenge, Day 4

This is a rare night out with other couples. I can’t remember the date, but our then baby was young and her health wasn’t stable. We lived in a new state with no family around. We couldn’t just get a sitter and go out, and for a long season, we lost “Tom and Julie.” Most of our pictures during this time are of all of us, which I love, but few exist of the two of us. Mothers of Preschoolers, MOPS, helped me so much in this season. If you’re married with young children, don’t forget to date. If you have a special needs situation, understand the divorce rate is high. Make a point to keep dating. Learn what organizations and people are out there to help. You and your spouse are worth it.

Love Your Spouse Challenge, Day 3

Earlier this month I participated in the Facebook Love Your Spouse Challenge because I wanted to encourage others. I believe I still need to do that, so I’m sharing my posts here. May it give you hope!

Love Your Spouse Challenge, Day 3

I know there are folks out there pointing out this challenge shows the smiles and not the hard times marriage brings. That’s why I’m doing this. To be authentic and to give hope. Marriage and parenthood is the toughest thing I’ll ever be involved in.

Love Your Spouse Challenge, Day 3

Love Your Spouse Challenge, Day 3

This is February 1998. I’m pregnant with Brian and my smile is fake. I’d been so sick for the first trimester, I was still trying to find “normal.” I’d been in a car accident that nearly totaled… our new van. I/Brian walked away without a scratch, but it took an emotional toll. My hormones were a mess and I received the message that I was a failure for nearly killing our child with the accident. I now know I was depressed (hormonal imbalance has always been an issue, I just didn’t know it for a long time) and a form of PTSD from the accident. I isolated myself, hiding in our bedroom because I was so ashamed to feel this way during such a happy time. Tom didn’t know what to do, so he left me alone.

If this sounds familiar to you, learn from us. I might have to initiate the talk, but it is worth it. Be honest. Explain you don’t need him to fix you, just listen. If you need a hug, say so. If you need to snot on their shoulder, say it. I encourage you to pray together. It’s talking, not fancy talk or religious speak. That is a powerful tool in your arsenal to break isolation.

We came out stronger (after a long time, it was a process) because of this and from that accident came Brian’s name. Brian means strong, and we chose Paul as a reminder that God can use the most impossible people, and once chosen, you might have an issue/thorn that makes it hard to be used, but be available—and watch Him do mighty things through you.

And that’s why I’m doing the challenge! Thanks, Susan, for tagging me. If you want to play along, please do!

Book Review: The Things We Knew

Book Review: The Things We Knew by Catherine West

When their tragic past begins to resurface, can he help her remember the things she can’t?

After her mother’s death twelve years ago, Lynette Carlisle watched her close-knit family unravel. One by one, her four older siblings left their Nantucket home and never returned. All seem to blame their father for their mother’s death, but nobody will talk about that tragic day. And Lynette’s memory only speaks through nightmares.

Then Nicholas Cooper returns to Nantucket, bringing the past with him. Once Lynette’s adolescent crush, Nick knows more about her mother’s death than he lets on. The truth could tear apart his own family—and destroy his fragile friendship with Lynette, the woman he no longer thinks of as a kid sister.

As their father’s failing health and financial concerns bring the Carlisle siblings home, secrets surface that will either restore their shattered relationships or separate the siblings forever. But pulling up anchor on the past propels them into the perfect storm, powerful enough to make them question their faith, their willingness to forgive, and the very truth of all the things they thought they knew.

Have you ever read a book and you could feel the tension? THE THINGS WE KNEW felt like an approaching thunderstorm as Lynette tries to keep things together for her ailing dad but secrets, hardship, illness, and her boyhood crush and neighbor, Nick, come crashing in and around her and her childhood home.

What I love, just like watching a storm, is THE THINGS WE KNEW doesn’t disappoint. The crescendo comes where all the truth about Lynette’s mother and her mysterious death come out. Nick’s secrets. Lynette’s siblings. They are left with hiding the aftermath or pulling together and heal as a cohesive unit.

I thought this was a strong story with equally strong secondary stories, especially with Lynette’s brother, Gray. This reminded me of a more stressful Baxter Series book by Karen Kingsbury, maybe more realistic is a better word. Whatever comparison I’m trying to make, THE THINGS WE KNEW is definitely worth reading.

To purchase THE THINGS WE KNEW, click here.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Love Your Spouse Challenge Day 2

I recently participated in the Love Your Spouse Challenge on Facebook. More than sharing the pictures through the years, I wanted to encourage others. Marriage is hard work. But God is good.

Be encouraged!

Love Your Spouse Challenge, Day 2.

Love Your Spouse Challenge, Day 2.

Love Your Spouse Challenge Day 2, tagged by Susan. Our wedding day, August 31, 1996. Perfect weather. I padded the schedule so well that we watched guests come in from upstairs. No regrets that we took pictures before the ceremony so we could head straight to reception, a perfect location. We had a prayer as a family that people still tell me they really were touched to see. We giggled our way through the ceremony. Perfect cake. It’s hard for me to watch the video—so many loved ones are gone or marriages done. But, God. We will celebrate our 20th this month. It has been hard, we are flawed people with selfish agendas. But we chose oneness over isolation, and I pray that’s what you learn from the challenge. I won’t tag anyone new, if you want to play along, please do!

Love Your Spouse Challenge Day 1

You’ve probably seen the challenge on Facebook. Although I can’t respond to each invitation I receive, this one grabbed my attention. I didn’t see it as a way to show the “glamourous” aspect of marriage through pictures.

I saw it as a way to be authentic and encourage.

Enough so that I am going to share my posts here.

Because somewhere, out there, someone needs that encouragement.

Here you go.

DAY ONE

dating1995

Susan tagged me for the Love Your Spouse challenge. For 7 days I’ll post a picture of Tom and I to promote marriage  and to challenge couples to choose onheeness over isolation every day!

Although one set is a newlywed, I think they have enough great pix together to participate if they want. I choose Amanda and Matt /Stephanie  because they were a big part of why I said yes when their dad asked me to marry him. I knew I wasn’t just marrying Tom, I was entering into a family. So glad I did!

This picture is the first one of us that I know of. I’m not sure we’re even engaged, but if so, it was pretty new. 1995.

COTT: Annette O’Hare Shares Inspiration Behind Northern Light

Authors get stories from so many different places and experiences. It’s

always interesting to discover where the inspiration comes from. Today,

we’ll hear from debut author, Annette O’Hare. Her historical romance,

Northern Light has already garnered some terrific reviews!

From the first sentence to the book’s

stunning conclusion, Annette O’Hare’s brilliant first novel Northern

Light captured my heart. O’Hare’s storytelling is flawless and her grasp

of Texas history is spot on. This tenth generation Texan heartily

approves! Do yourself a favor and savor this meeting of North and South

on the Bolivar peninsula. I promise it will be the best book you’ll read

in a very long time!
—Kathleen Y’Barbo, best-selling author

of over 40 titles

My Inspiration For Writing Northern Light

By: Annette O’Hare

Annette

O’Hare

There’s a wonderful phrase known to authors that says, write what you

know. This simple idiom by Twain, or was it Faulkner, no…I think it

might have been Thurber, no it was definitely Twain who said it. Whoever

it was knew what they were talking about and that’s why I wrote Northern

Light. The setting for my debut novel is the lighthouse on the Bolivar

Peninsula on the Texas coast; a place near and dear to my heart. A place

I know very well.

When I was a child growing up in Houston, Texas in the 1970’s, my family

visited Bolivar every summer for fishing, swimming, and shell hunting.

My father would drive our family of five to Galveston, and then onto a

short ferry ride connecting Galveston Island with the Bolivar Peninsula.

The ferry ride was a favorite part of the vacation. We made playful bets

concerning which ferry we would ride. Would it be the Cone Johnson, the

E.H. Thornton Jr., the R.S. Sterling, or the Gibb Gilchrist? We knew

each boat by name. My two older brothers and I would save back French

fries and pinches of bread from our fast food meals. After the boat was

loaded and the captain gave the safety speech, we would bolt for the

back of the boat to feed the seagulls and dolphins.

I always knew the exact place the ferry would dock at the peninsula

because Daddy told me to look for the landmark. It was hard to find at

first, but the closer the ferry came to Bolivar, the bigger it became.

By the time the boat landed, the Bolivar Point Lighthouse was as big as

a skyscraper in this little girl’s eyes.

http://annetteohare.com/images/misc/bolivarpoint-688.jpgOnce off the boat we drove past the iron lighthouse.

Her light extinguished, she no longer lit the way for ships coming in or

going out of Galveston Bay. Daddy always pointed out the two, abandoned

keeper’s houses beside the lighthouse. He showed how one of the house’s

nameplates read Boyt and the other, Maxwell. I didn’t understand the

significance then, but later I realized the connection. Daddy’s aunt, my

great aunt, was married to a Boyt, and she and her sister, my

grandmother, were born with the surname Maxwell.

You’re probably wondering if my daddy’s family were the lighthouse

keepers. No, the truth is that Mr. Boyt, my great-uncle, bought the

lighthouse and property at an auction and it has been owned by that

family ever since.

The original Bolivar Point Lighthouse dates back prior to the Civil War.

In fact, it was during that war that the Confederates completely

dismantled the lighthouse. Some accounts say it was so the Union

wouldn’t use the light to

their advantage. Others say the Confederate army used the iron for

weapons and artillery. Nevertheless, the lighthouse was rebuilt shortly

after the war. The great conical tower has seen over 150 years of United

States history and it still stands tall on the Bolivar Peninsula to this

day.

I wish I could write historical romance, because I love to read it. When I learned that there was a review opportunity for a civil war romance, I jumped at it because that’s my favorite time period.

Northern Light did not disappoint.

Margaret is a single young woman living in Bolivar Peninsula grieving the loss of her fiancé who died in the war. It’s not her only loss. Her family had to leave New Orleans and her sister is falling ill, a consequence of the war. The last thing she wants to do is get involved in any aspect of the war, especially when it comes to anything yankee.

She then comes across a Yankee solider who is near death. Her family takes him in and nurses him back to health, something Margaret struggles with despite her Christian upbringing. Thanks to her parent’s example and their prayers, she overcomes her grief and bitterness, only to be threatened to go through it all over again.

This is a solid story that put me smack dab in the south during the war. It felt authentic and I could feel Margaret’s pain and conflict. The characters were all well-developed and well-researched, including Margaret’s attempt to make a meal for Thomas that is ripe of his Irish history. The secondary story of Margaret’s story is one I never thought about when it came to the war. It’s moving and heartbreaking and enhances an already great story.

If you love historicals, are a fan of the Civil War, and read romance, Northern Light is a must read.
