Humans are Weird - I Swear I Have a Goal

Picture  Humans are Weird – I Swear I Have a Goal

The rustling of the canopy leaved drifted down to caress antennas and smooth wrinkled frills. First Father shifted the basket on his arm and bent to examine a brown spot on an otherwise unremarkable fruit. The dim light this deep in a garden that was generations older than even the eldest grandmother remembered was hardly enough to give him a clear look so he reached into the basket for his light. He set it to cycle through the spectrum about a hundred nanometers at at time and played it over the fruit. He gave a frustrated click as the light failed to reveal anything definite. He supposed he should contact Second Grandfather if the capricious old one could be contacted. It grew harder with every passing year. First Father set the light back in his basket and was pondering taking the yet, unripe fruit in to his Third Sister. However this strand of thought was sent off in a spiral when the rustling of tiny feat through leaves attracted his attention.
First Daughter and Second Cousin came scrambling along the garden path as fast as they could. First Daughter had her frill out in a very pronounced sign of indignation but her still short antenna were flicking with excitement. Second Cousin let her frill droop around her neck and her antenna were curled with worry. First Father deliberately held back a chitter of amusement as he waited for them to come up to him. They dared under his legs, they were already to big to fit a pair of cousins under there and Second Cousin politely let herself be shoved out and stetted for clinging to one of his hind legs.
“Father!” First Daughter burst out.
“First Father,” Second Cousin corrected her.
First Daughter flicked her antenna at her cousin in a warning gesture but accepted the correction.
“First Father,” she said. “One of the humans is being-”
She paused and carefully worked her mandibles over the long word.
“-inefficient!” she declared with a happy sideways skitter.
First Father really had to struggle to keep the amusement out of his voice, and knew he didn’t quite keep it out of his frill as he replied.
“Well that is very serious,” he said in the gravest tone he could manage with his head angled down at their eager antenna.
First Daughter bobbed up and down in agreement.
“He is just wandering around the outer garden!” she went on. “Just holding a flower in his hand, and it’s all wilted, and it’s getting more wilted, and he might step on somebody-”
First Father was certain she would go on describing the scene until her thorax compressed and he shook out his frill. Both of the little ones leapt away and stared up at him expectantly. He flicked his antenna in a request for them to show him and they skittered off down the path and he followed them, arranging the basket on his arm. They reached the edge of the inner gardens and First Sister excitedly inclined her little antenna to the human on the other side of the vines.
First Father licked his eyes as the facets adjusted to the brilliant light outside of the dense canopy. There was a human out there. A female he thought, as his vision cleared he recognized her. Mary Beth was a botanist who had come to study the interactions of a truly established generational garden in an alien ecosystem. He and his children had gotten quite used to seeing her bustling about the garden preforming her research, usually very efficiently. So First Father understood why First Daughter was discomforted by Mary Beth’s current behavior.
The human held a wilted flowering stalk in one hand and was directing her binocular eyes towards the towering form of one of the native trees that grew outside of the garden. Her arms were held in a nearly Shatar posture; bent at the elbows at nearly right angles. Her whole body twitched and she took three uncertain steps towards the main guest building she was staying in, then she half turned and took five of her lumbering human steps towards the tables First Father’s sisters had laid out for her work, finally she turned back and stepped to her original position and stood swaying with her entire body radiating uncertainty.
“Mary Beth?” First Father called out, feeling quite concerned now.
He was fairly certain that the solar radiation even outside of the garden was neither dense nor intense enough to cause sun stroke in the rugged humans, and her membrane was not radiation flushed, but one had to make sure with these things.
The human started at the sound of his voice and her head snapped around.
“I have a goal!” she declared in reasonable Shatar. “I swear!”
“Of course you do dear,” First Father said soothingly, “do you need me to come out and help you achieve that goal?”
“No, no,” Mary Beth assured him as she turned and now strode confidentially towards the work tables, “I’m good now, the brain just got stuck in neutral a bit. It happens.”
“Should we spy on her?” First Daughter asked, her antenna flicking eagerly.
“That won’t be necessary,” First Father said reaching down to stroke the back of her skull. “You can come help me check the fruit where I was for those odd spots.”
The two disappointed children followed him back to the garden while First Father sent a note to First Mother to research what the human meany by their brain getting stuck in neutral.

Humans are Weird - Bound

Picture
 Humans are Weird – Bound

The brilliant light from the system’s three stars pierced the atmosphere and seared through the canopy of grasses that gently waved several meters over the composting clearing. The shadows were dense enough to prevent radiations burns for most species but even so several layers of protection had been suggested by the local Ranger base. Touching the Passing Mammals very deliberately rustled the topmost layers of his central pile in a gesture he hoped the Undulate would take as a waggle of concentration even from under the additional mass.
Probesswiftly was a little difficult to read himself. The domed radiation shield he local Undulates preferred took several of their appendages to control and effectively hid them from above. Fortunately they could all resort to purely auditory languages, but it did limit things slightly even so.
“I think that I have gathered the essential meaning of your communication,” Touches the Passing Mammals said slowly, “I am simply uncertain why you have brought your observations to me.”
Probesswiftly shifted his mass to the side, shoving over a pile of dropped grass seeds.
“The local medic does not recognize the behavior as problematic in any way,” Probesswiftly explained, “and her First Mother relies entirely on her for all human related interactions as there is very little language overlap between these human Rangers and the local Shatar population.”
“And yet the human’s behavior has resulted in several injuries,” Touching the Passing Mammals observed.
“As yet they are fairly minor,” Probesswiftly explained, “while there is some danger of a serious injury resulting from the behavior the human in question does seem to have taken reasonable steps to mediate these dangers.”
A particularly strong wind swept over the canopy and the grass heads bend and swished, letting a powerful concentration of radiation fall into the clearing. The Undulate retreated under his shield and clamped it to the surface of decaying leaves under him. Touching the Passing Mammals considered sending a tendril up under the shield to continue the conversation but decided against it. The wind gusts would pass soon enough and by the time he had extended enough mass to both produce and receive sound it would be unnecessary. Then he would have to pull it back down before one of the newly arrived humans lumbered into the clearing, or risk some minor crushing damage. So Touching the Passing Mammals pondered the situation the Undulate had presented to him.
From everything that he had digested the humans did not experience dormancy in anything approaching the same way that the Gathering did. For one thing this “sleep” cycle the humans engaged in occurred with the local day night cycle and seemed to have to do with the humans needing to flush waste toxins from their central thought organ.
There were a few similarities however. The humans tended to seek a low elevation and layer with dead-matter, often composed of detritus like material though many humans preferred synthetic, for warmth while their core mass was inactive. Still, that was hardly enough for the Undulate to make a connection between the two behaviors.
Touching the Passing Mammals’s musings were interrupted as the gust ended and Probesswiftly poked a slightly bleached appendage experimentally out from under the radiation shield before lifting it.
“It is a matter of individual preference,” Probesswiftly explained. “The binding process that concerns me appears to be unique to this human in my experience. You also have chosen a statistically unusual pattern of dormancy to your species and there is quite literal overlap in the methodology.”
Touching the Passing Mammals generated a thoughtful ground-hum to display his consideration to the Undulate as he processed that.
“Describe the methodology to me again,” he requested.
Probesswiftly shifted around a bit before answering.
“The human goes to bed and assumes a quite normal supine position with his arms and shoulders over the blanket and sheets,” Probesswiftly said.
“Which is the problematic layer?” Touching the Passing Mammals asked.
“The sheets,” Probesswiftly said, “the blankets are too thick to bind. As the human drops into dormancy he changes position several times, but usually the sheet is still in the overall coverage position by the time he reaches full unconsciousness.”
“And the dangerous behavior occurs after the human passes into full dormancy?” Touching the Passing Mammals asked.
“Yes!” Probesswiftly stated, “that is very strange I know!”
Touches the Passing Mammals shuffled his mass in a gesture for Probesswiftly to go on.
“Somehow the sheet becomes twisted and wrapped tightly around the human’s legs,” Probesswiftly stated, “when the human comes out of dormancy he attempts to rise from his dormancy platform and fails, causing his center of mass to drop violently to the floor. We can feel the vibrations all around the base!”
“But the human has not yet sustained injury from this behavior?” Touching the Passing Mammals asked.
“No,” Prodsswifly admitted.
Touching the Passing Mammals settled his center of mass to process this. He felt that there was a connection to himself here. Not only had he chosen to make his primary area in the great grasslands of this world, he had refused offers from his more motile allies to segment the grass sections he was slowly digesting, effectively binding himself to this one biome with their tangled interconnections. This carried certain dangers and advantages.
“I will speak to the human,” Touching the Passing Mammals stated. “Though I do not promise to attempt to alter his behavior.”
“Thank you!” Prodsswiftly exclaimed. “That is of course fair. I will tell the human you wish to speak to him.”
“He will not object?” Touching the Passing Mammals asked.
“Not him,” Prodsswiftly said with a laugh. “There’s nothing a human likes more than talking about themselves.”

Humans are Weird - A Little Punchy - Animatic

Picture  Humans are Weird – A Little Punchy
“Yes Sir,” Human Friend Drevven said grimly into his communications unit. “Of course Sir!”
Seventh Flap paused in his flight to listen to the conversation. The human on the other peak of the wave was simply giving a series of orders in a calm voice but Human Friend Drevven seemed to be growing increasingly more agitated. His furless skin was flushing as the blood rushed to the surface and his body began to radiate heat into the chill air of the base, enough heat that Seventh Flap was tempted to forgo propriety and snuggle up against the back of the human’s neck, but he restrained himself and waited for the human to finish his call.
“Goodbye,” Human Friend Drevven finally concluded in a tight voice.
He dropped his arm to his side and spun away to march toward the door. Seventh Flap thought about calling out to get his attention but shouting in the human hearing range was difficult and if he circled around Seventh Flap could catch Human Friend Drevven’s eye just as he came into the full sunlight. Then he could get permission to land right on the human’s collar and get both the warmth from the local star and the local large mammal. He prepared to swing around between the human’s head and the door frame but stopped suddenly as the human gave a low snarl and swung his fist forward in an almost painfully slow arc.
Seventh Flap gave a pip of panic and darted forward in an attempt to stop the vector. He logically knew he could never hope to redirect even the mass of the human’s hand, let alone the applied force of the muscles but he acted on instinct. He did manage to reach the hand before it struck the wall and latched his winghooks into the soft flesh on either side of the bony framework. A moment later however the fist impacted against the wall and Human Friend Drevven gave a small grunt.
“What the-” Human Friend Drevven barked out, jerking his hand back.
Seventh Flap clung trembling to his hand, his sensory horns ringing from the force of the blow that had transferred backwards through the human’s hand. When he reoriented he realized that Human Friend Drevven was holding the hand that had struck the wall against his chest. The human’s other hand was cupped under Seventh Flap’s perch as a safety net. Human Friend Drevven was speaking to him in a soothing tone.
Seventh Flap shook out his head and instead of dropping to the offered hand quickly scrambled up and peered down at the human’s knuckles. He winced at the damage he saw but breathed easier when he noted that the blood was only seeping out from the skin and not surging as he expected from the force of the blow. Human Friend Drevven was getting more insistent in his demand for Seventh Flap’s attention.
“What was that about?” Seventh Flap demanded.
He whipped around and gave the human his best glare. It still amazed him that his comparatively tiny mass could intimidate the massive predatory species but apparently when a Winged glared they resembled some human nightmare or the other. It certainly caused Human Friend Drevven to stop talking and jerk his head back a few inches.
“What was that about?” Seventh Flap demanded again.
Human Friend Drevven glanced between his knuckles and the wall and then shrugged.
“I was frustrated,” he said.
Seventh Flap stared up at him trying to make some sense out of that.
“So you punched the wall,” he said, “you punched the plasicreet wall, with you primary gripping appendage with enough force to damage it…”
“Oh no,” Human Friend Drevven said, his face brightening up. “The wall’s fine.”
Seventh Flap seriously thought about biting the human in that moment but he settled for reinforcing his grip on the flesh of his hand.
“Medical ward,” Seventh Flap snared out.
“What?” Human Friend Drevven suddenly sounded concerned. “Are you hurt?”
Seventh Flap stared down at the seeping blood and tried to fight down a sigh.
“Take me to the medical ward,” Seventh Flap said as firmly as he could, “and on the way tell me what the connection is between frustration and punching a wall.”

What does it mean when your human friend says “Watch This?”? Why does this simple phrase seem to terrify any alien that has first appendage experience with humans? #HFY #HumansAreWeird #HumansAreSpaceOrcs #EarthIsADeathWorld #EarthIsSpaceAustralia
