Humans are Weird - Victory

Picture  Humans are Weird – Victory

Notes the Passing Changes carefully observed the angle of the sunbeams that warmed the leaf-litter of his main mass. As soon as the angle passed thirty degrees from the horizon the larger motile species would be released from their duties in the College research outpost. He would have to have recalled at least forty percent of his working tendrils before that time if he wanted to avoid both disturbing them with his efforts and losing a percentage of his tendrils to crush or tear damage.
He calculated the amount of iron rich leaves he had pulled over the north quarter of the orchard. That process was going slower than he had anticipated. The iron rich leaves from the native trees had the exact mass the Shatar expedition had calculated, however Notes the Passing Changes had grossly overestimated how fast he could move them with his tendrils.
The decayed general biomass he was gathering for his winter’s dormancy was coming along much faster. The leaves and sticks skittered over the surface of the detritus layer quickly, however he was losing a significant portion to wind.
With a half satisfied sigh Notes the Passing Changes shifted his attention to making sure the walking paths for the ground based sapients were clear of derbies and began shifting tendrils together to from his socialization mass. As was the trend of things since his spore forms had landed on this planet he found himself eager to interact with the lumber humans, the skittering Shatar, and the undulating Undulates. He appreciated the many and diverse tree plants the other species had gifted him with. Those rare moments when a human would pause and mulch with him were delightful in ways he had never experienced before. However he also found himself regretting the quiet seasons he had lived on the planet alone before the others had arrived. He had had so much time to arrange every element of his well known, albeit simplistic, systems and then to ponder over all the changes he observed. Now, he hadn’t time to finish one alteration before a human was suggesting, or inadvertently causing another. Their constant habit of adding nitrogen to the system without though or reason was particularly aggravating.
“Still, this is the price one pays for sapient company,” Notes the Passing Changes stated as he practiced using his vocal tendrils.
The steady double beat of approaching humans vibrated through the ground and Notes the Passing Changes arranged his biomass into a pleasant expression. Shiny green leaves for eyes. A movable opening for a mouth. He flexed the cable like tendrils he formed for gripping and lifting in the rudimentary arms he was able to form. He wasn’t really as skilled as his progenitors on his last world had been. He had faint memories of a line relative who had been able to make a very realistic Shatar form out of sticks and had even managed to match their pheromones. However he found that the humans local to this planet appreciated his “mulch monster” form as they called it. Though there was some debate among the local population if there was anything actually pleasant about his appearance, or if the local children having grown up with it were simply desensitized to any horror.
“Hey Notes!” an eager voice called out. “Are the apples ready?”
Notes the Passing Changes carefully rotated his body and waved one of his “arms” at the two approaching humans.
Sandy and Pat were a young pair of the local population who, according to their seniors, had just initiated the primary human courtship ritual. The frequently came to wander and mulch in his main orchard and Notes the Passing Changes had grown quite fond of them both.
“Yes,” he confirmed, lifting the corners of his “mouth” in a smile. “There is one tree on the south side of the orchard near the storage shed that has many human ripe apples.”
“How is your early windfall collection going?” Pat asked as they passed his main body with a nod.
“Quite well,” Notes the Passing Changes said, sending his voice to follow them as he slowly shifted his main mass. “I am distributing the sugars to the Shatar beanpod vines.”
“That should give them a good start on next year,” Sandy observed.
“Hopefully by using the excess fruit sugars I will be able to harvest the beanpods next year,” Notes the Passing Changes said as he sent his voice along with them.
He intended to follow along with his main mass however Fifth Botanist came trotting down a path chittering frantically about the zinc content of the nursery gardens. The head horticultural expert from University was striding along in the north quadrant and Notes the Passing Changes was fairly sure he had missed something important about drainage in the north fields once the surface water froze over. A scamper of human children were frolicking dangerously close to a nest of tender saplings. Notes the Passing Changes weighed his priorities. His decision made he hunkered his main mass down and sent the majority of his attention over to frolic with the children. The horticultural expert seemed to need to talk, and Fifth Botanist only needed his voice to guide him to the proper herb beds.
By the time he had exhausted the children with leaf piles, far away from the tender saplings, Fifth Botanist had gathered his herbs and the horticultural expert had wandered out of his hearing. Several dozen more beings had arrived of course but none of them appeared to need more than a fraction of his attention and he happily pulled his tendrils back to his main biomass and began the steady shuffle to the south where Pat and Sandy appeared to be rearranging the contents of the storage shed rather than mulching contentedly as he had expected. Notes the Passing Changes felt his curiosity quicken as he drew near.
Sandy had apparently left the orchard, from the vibrations in the ground at no slow pace, and Pat was dropping heavy things in the dense leaf-litter around the tree with the ripest apples. Notes the Passing Changes was aware of what Pat was doing. There were the crates used to ship large quantities of undamaged apples. There was the old ladder. However it wasn’t until Pat was actively climbing the pile of equipment that Notes the Passing Changes felt a qualm of uneasy. He didn’t know much about structural integrity. He was far from being the physics expert his line relative of the Shatar shape was, but he was fairly certain that the loose leaf litter was not a stable base for any structure.
Therefore he was hardly surprised when, just as Pat reached the levels of the middling branches, the whole structure toppled over. Pat fell into the leaf mulch with a yelp, the majority of the human’s mass disappearing under the soft mass. Notes the Passing Changes finally made his way up the to legs and arms sticking out of the detritus and considered the situation. His tendrils under the leaves told him that Pat was breathing evenly and Pat’s heart-rate was gradually slowing down to its normal pace. Pat’s hormone profile tasted of triumph and adrenaline with faint and dissipating traces of panic.
Notes the Passing Changes heaved his mass up, and extended a poking stick from his arm. He arranged his face leaves into a concerned expression and gently prodded Pat’s center of mass with the stick.
Pat twitched.
“Sandy said I wouldn’t be able to get it!” Pat burst out in a rush.
“What did Sandy say you would not be able to get?” Notes the Passing Changes asked.
There was a rustle in the leaves as Pat punched a hand up out of the leaf-mulch. Hormones flushed with pride and triumph, the human displayed the particularly human ripe apple to Notes the Passing Changes face.
“And where is Sandy?” Notes the Passing Changes asked.
“Sandy went to get the tall picking ladder,” Pat explained. “I can’t wait to show this when Sandy gets back!”
“I see,” Notes the Passing Changes said. “Do you require assistance altering your position?”
There was a long moment as Pat’s pheromones began to be touched with pain signals.
“Nah,” Pat finally said. “I’ll just mulch here till Sandy gets back.”

Humans are Weird – Improper Use of Pillows

Picture  Humans are Weird – Improper Use of Pillows

The morning light drifted down through the canopy of the garden and scattered over the glowing white net that was rapidly growing up from the dancing fingers of the First and Second Fathers of the local hive. Their First Grandfather was settled comfortably on a garden couch, itself woven from some living vine, and was offering occasional instruction. The visiting human Matron, accompanied by a tangle of her students, had folded herself down beside him on the ground and was observing with interest while her charges had scampered off to fetch the components of the complex meals the humans shared on common with the Shatar and the Winged. Above them the fluttering of the Winged added a constant soft music as they added the experimental pattern to the weave.
Rollscomfortably shifted her own grip on the weave that was drifting down from where she perched half in, half out of the deep irrigation canal. Below her several of her fellow colonists were busily chanting an old weaving shanty as they finished the coral guard in a simple and easy pattern. The upper half was something of a tangle as they had tried to mimic the, unquestionably beautiful, pattern the joint Shatar-Winged effort was producing. Despite their best efforts replicating the two-dimensional pattern that represented various native flying predators had produced only rather comical lumps in the thicker strands of the coral netting. Then they had tried replicating the concept with representations of aquatic predators, which had resulted in slightly longer comical lumps in the netting, and about a third of the way down they had given up and simply begun weaving a simple coral growth pattern. The underwater weavers had come to a curve and were redirecting the weave, something that took more than usual concentration, but they finished the direction change and one of the gestured up at Rollscomfortably.
“Are the winged and the Shatar still having that argument about the sleeping girl?” Prodscarefully asked.
Rollscomfortably shifted her attention and listened to the conversation.
“-dislocated joints are nothing to snuffle at!” one of the Winged was chittering excitedly. “I’ve been grounded myself with spinal misalignment.”
“That was a bad one,” another voice piped up.
“He couldn’t fly for weeks!”
“But the compression that causes joint misalignment is so glaringly obvious. I think we can trust a nearly grown human to avoid something that causes direct pain.”
“Yes,” Rollscomfortably confirmed. “It seems that First Father and Second Father are waiting out the current flutter of excitement in the flight before they reply.”
“Is the human podling still showing the contested behavior?” Prodscarefully asked.
Rollscomfortably took some nice wet appendages and waved them to catch the light coming from the young human’s direction. Under a particularly old trunk the human Matron had set some cushions for the one student who had not been feeling well. The Matron had explained it as some cyclic internal hormonal imbalance and had let the young one rest while the others had gone off of the errand. When the human had first sat down she had sat much as the Matron sat, with her limbs stiffly folded, but the young one had quickly shifted positions and was no only nominally on the cushion. One leg was bent behind her, one arm was curled around the cushion, her head lolled back against the roots of the great vine trunk and soft, rhythmic sounds came from her head. The cushion she was clutching showed traces where her powerful teeth had jaws had gripped it for some unfathomable reason as if she had been chewing food.
“She is,” Rollscomfortably said. “I really think she looks quite comfortable.”
“Don’t forget her joints,” Prodscarefully reminded her. “At least I think it is the joints that cause the issue. At least that is where the fluid constriction is supposed to happen according to the fisherman who visits our coves.”
“There is nothing constraining her,” Rollsscomfortably observed.
“Never mind the human girl!” called up Pushes along from deep below. “The argument is the interesting thing!”
Rollscomfortably dutifully turned her attention to where First and Second Father were now speaking in tandem. One tossing out a thought after the other.”
“It is more than just damage to the joints one has to consider,” First Father was saying.
“There is the propriety of the matter!” Second Father insisted.
“Of course it all goes back to joint health in the end,” First Father corrected himself.
“And cardiovascular health,” Second Father added, his antenna twitching with excitement.
“Most issues of propriety do go back to health at their first causes.”
“But one must consider the propriety too.”
“Always.”
“But what does propriety have to do with sleeping position?” a Winged demanded.
“Slovenly habits reflect badly on the discipline of the hive!”
“And on the genetics of the hive!”
Rollscomfortably listened attentively. Fortunately her part in the net weaving required little more than anchoring the top of the net in the general area of the rock she was half perched on, leaving plenty of appendages free to either dip back into the water to hydrate or to wave about catching the sound, or to vibrate her translation down to her workmates.
“Why are the Shatar and the Winged so excited about this,” wondered Prodscarefully. “It is hardly more than an academic curiosity at best, and a bit of needless prodding at worst.”
“Gossip,” Rollscomfortably offered. “The humans call it nosey gossip.”
Here workmates hummed in interest over the new word as the debate raged on until the rest of the girls came trooping back carrying preposterous volumes of liquid and solid foodstuffs. The Matron rose to busy herself with the preparation and orderly dispersal of the food while the various net weavers left their work to help.
Rollscomfortably kept her attention on the sleeping human girl for a few moments longer. The human twitched at the noise and chemical clouds of nutrient scent that wafted through the air. Rollscomfortably had been told that one of the reasons land dwelling species heated their food was to create these scent clouds. They did seem to effectively summon the girl out of her dormancy phase. Her limbs slowly realigned themselves, causing her to topple over and slump on the ground. There was a moment of scrambling that clearly indicated at least partly numbed appendages accompanied by muttering as she finally gripped the trunk of the vine to pull herself upright and twisted her head around to direct her binocular vision in search of the source of the smells.
“Food!” the girl happily called out as she trotted towards her companions.
“Well,”Rollscomfortably, “both joints and propriety aside it seems that despite the fears of the Winged and Shatar the girl suffered no harm from improperly using her pillows.”

Humans are Weird - Imaginative

Picture  Humans are Weird – Imaginative

“Art is subjective,” Twenty-Three Trills observed uneasily as Forty-fifth Flap licked his winghook and turned the next page in the massive sketch book.
“Not that subjective Forty-fifth Flap muttered as the page eased down in the thick atmosphere with a soft susurration of plant fibers gliding over each other.
“These creatures surely cannot exist,” Twenty-Three Trills insisted as he stared down in horror at the multiple rows of teeth.
There was a massive tongue, not quite like a humans, but Human Friend Jenna had made sure to draw the details down to the rough taste buds. It was ringed by jagged teeth, each roughly the shape of a winghook, clearly designed to rend flesh. The horrific part was how many rings of teeth there were. Some were fully extended from the gums, damaged and falling out. Some were just beginning to protrude.
Unconsciously Twenty-Three Trills ran his own thin tongue over his nice thin teeth, needle nommers, the humans called them, arranged in evenly spaced rows.
“Why would Human Friend Jenna spend so much time sketching creatures that don’t exist?” Forty-fifth Flap asked as he took an image of the page with his multi-tool.
Twenty-Three Trills shrugged.
“Art,” he offered again. “I have an aunt in my home-flight who decorates our family tree with all kinds of winged insects that look nothing like they do in real life.”
“Isn’t she the one you say uses scraps from the utility-harness manufacturing plant your uncle runs though?” Forty-fifth Flap asked.
“What are you sounding at?” Twenty-Three Trills asked.
“Your aunt’s imaginary creatures are the result of applying a medium that imposes restrictions on her art,” Forty-fifth Flap explained as he laboriously turned another page and took another image. “There are no restrictions at all in this simple drawing format.
Twenty-Three Trills gave a vague grunt at that and turned his attention to the drawings. Forty-fifth Flap was a scraping good scout but once he got started on the details of whatever art he was considering he would talk until your sensory horns went numb. Twenty-Three Trills was beginning to regret mentioning his artistic aunt. This page of the human’s sketch journal showed the creature in profile. There was a humans sketched in for scale.
“Those animals can’t exist,” Twenty-Three Trills said firmly. “Look at it’s size! Those are clearly terrestrial limbs and nothing gets that large in a gaseous atmosphere. The surface to volume ratio is just too skewed. The only question would be would it overheat to death before it achieved peak toxicity and died from toxin overload.”
“It might be aquatic,” Forty-fifth Flap said as he turned another page. “Look, here we see it coming out of the water. Those fins might be for heat diffusion.”
“Even if it is from a planet with low gravity to explain the size,” Twenty-Three Trill objected, “and high atmospheric pressure to provide enough of its primary gas, and it has a way to diffuse heat it can’t get around the toxin load-”
He cut off as the next page turned and the Forty-fifth Flap gave a soft trill of astonishment. The lower limbs were not finished in the sketch. The creature, imaginary or real had his head turned to look over his shoulder. The lines around the dorsal fins radiated in a way to imply they were generating light. It’s gaping maw full of teeth was wide open and a beam of light was blazing out at some target in the far background. Twenty-Three Trills squinted at the target.
“Is that an insect?” he demanded. “The legs and wings would indicate-”
“This must be how it releases excess heat,” Forty-fifth Flap said with a happy click.
“That isn’t real!” Twenty-Three Trills snapped. “Look at the insect! There is no way that wing structure could be that large! The gravitational force alone on the circulatory system-”
“Quite, quite,” Forty-fifth Flap muttered with an absent wave of his wing as the page turned again. “Here are the ones I wanted.”
“Oh,” Twenty-Three Trills looked at the new page with a faint feeling of weak wind. “Those are just studies of humans.”
“Yes,” Forty-fifth Flap said, rustling his wings happily as he began taking images of the sketches. “My cousin Seventh Flap told me that Human Friend Jenna did excellent human sketches. The art style emphasizes neo-natal features a bit but the over emphasis of the muscle structure is very useful for studying human anatomy.”
“I see,” Twenty-Three Trills dropped his chin down on his crossed winghooks and admired the drawings. “They are extremely accurate, though I must say that most humans I know would not be as flexible as the humans in these pictures.”
“Over emphasizing flexibility is a hallmark of art,” Forty-fifth Flap said. “In every species except the Gathering I believe. If you have joints the art shows the maximum use, not the average, especially studies like this.”
“That makes sense,” Twenty-Three Trills agreed. “Practice has to be a bit disassociated from reality.”
He paused and wrinkled his nose however as more pages of studies in human movement were turned in front of him. Forty-fifth Flap finally noticed his silence and glance up at him from the bench where he was examining the sketch book.
“What is bothering you now?” Forty-fifth Flap asked his nose frills bouncing in amusement, “we know humans are real.”
“The ears,” Twenty-Three Trills said slowly. “Not all of them, but some of them are … oddly shaped.”
Forty-fifth Flap glanced down at a crouching human and his head tilted to the side.
“While I have never seen humans with ears that shape I have heard that it happens,” he said.
“And there are marking on the face and sometimes the arms,” Twenty-Three Trills stated.
“Is Human Friend Jenna depicting their stripes?” Forty-fifth Flap asked.
“The markings are not stripes on the sketches and don’t follow the real patterns that the Undulates describe,” Twenty-Three Trills said. “None of this is completely out of range of human variability, especially if you take personal adornment into account, but it is odd that these elements are so concentrated.”
“I sound your meaning,” Forty-fifth Flap agreed. “The most common marking seems to be these vertical, triangular stripes on their cheeks. I have never seen any human decorate their faces like that.”
“Perhaps it is a technical marker?” Twenty-Three Trills hazarded. “Something to indicate something relevant to the physical position of the subject?”
“Unlikely,” Forty-Fifth Flap said. “It would be more prominently displayed and many of these are quite hidden. This is curious. I have never seen this in any other human art style.”
“What style of art did your cousin say Human Friend Jenna practiced?” Twenty-Three Trills asked.
“I can’t remember at the moment,” Forty-fifth Flap said. “It originated in some geographically isolated area so it is distinct from the general drift of the two dimensional art humans produce.”
“Curious,” Twenty-Three Trills observed. “Do remember to tell me when you ask Human Friend Jenna about it.”

Humans are Weird - Wave Rider

Picture  Humans are Weird – Wave Rider

“Gust incoming!” came the distant shout from one of the humans down the massive canyon.
Gst’ck paused in her lecture and tucked her body close down to the lichen covered rock she and her cluster of graduate students were perched on. The group fell silent as the ever present canyon wind suddenly increased from it’s constant whispering to a brief roar. Gst’ck felt the resulting pressure difference pushing her up and clung to the rock. It was highly unlikely that the wind would lift her mass but she had to set a good example for her students. The cluster likewise twitched and the wind surged over their fuzzy heads. It finally died down leaving their auditory membranes ringing with lingering vibrations.
Gst’ck was about to resume her measurements on the teal lichen that she was considering for domestication in their colonies in the roots above the canyon when one of her graduate students clicked an absently polite inturption.
“Yes Tsc’ss?” Gst’ck asked without really turning her attention away from the lichen.
“What are the humans doing?” Tsc’ss asked, holding up a clairifier in the direction of the mammals in question+.
Gst’ck fought down a massive shrug of annoyance. As she expected everyone of her graduate students was now turned to focus down the canyon towards the docks where the humans’ submarines surfaced to the their crews out for light and air. Gst’ck didn’t know what the humans were doing. She quite frankly didn’t care what the humans were doing. Their researches into the mining potential of the canyons and caverns were no doubt productive for the colony and the system in general, but had no effect whatsoever on her own work. Still, the web like all encompassing curiosity of a fuzzy young grad student was something to be harnessed and trained, not suppressed.
“What do you observe?” Gst’ck asked without looking up from her sample.
“The humans are gathering at the end of the wave riding bridge,” one stated, taking the clarifier and studying the situation.
“They all look very excited,” another offered.
Gst’ck was about to inquire how they determined excitement in a bipedal mammal but another student interjected.
“Their large motor movements are faster and shorter than usual,” he said, “and their voices have risen in pitch and frequency.”
“It is only the dock crews,” another clarified. “There are no subs docked at the moment.”
“They are arranging themselves in some specific order.”
“They are flexing their muscles. That means they are preparing for sudden movement, not bracing for impact.”
“The windbore!”
The careful observations broke down into chitterings of stress and excitement that finally suceeded in pulling Gst’ck away from her work. She stalked over to the student holding the clairifier.
“Do remember that these humans are trained professionals and will not stupidly endanger themselves,” she reminded them as she took the device.
There was an uneasy chitter of agreement as she studied the situation. The wind-bore was indeed seeming to menace the humans on the dock. The high wind-gusts in the canyon, coming on top of the steady, constant breeze created a long series of tall wave-crests that bore down the canyons. It was thanks to these unpredictable and powerful surges that the Trisk science teams had to limit themselves to these high ledges, far from the water’s edge.
The humans, sturdier and more endothermic had simply built their docks to withstand the bore waves and trained to work around them. On of the modifications they had insisted was necessary was one wave-riding bridge from one dock to another. This bridge consisted of individual floats that were connected with cables and rested on the water’s surface. The design did indeed negate much of the stress caused by the waves but the design had always struck Gst’ck as impractical. She could not conceive how the bipeds, always on the verge of falling over, could hope to use the bridge during the bore-waves. It looked like she was about to get her answer. The humans were clustered at the end of the wave riding bridge. Her students had described the situation well. The bore wave struck the end of the bridge and the structure began to undulate. With a resounding whoop from his massive lungs the leading human rushed out onto the bridge. He made it nearly a quarter of the way across before falling off into the cold waters of the canyon.
Frantic chittering broke out from her students and Gst’ck raised a griping appendage sternly to silence them.
“How are the other humans reacting?” she demanded.
There was a long pause as her students considered this question.
“They are laughing,” one observed.
“Another human has already replaced him on the bridge.”
“She fell into.”
“None of the other humans are offering to aid them.”
“The fallen ones appear to be laughing as well.”
“They are swimming for the soft dock.”
“The first humans is running back to the main cluster.”
“They have formed a queue.”
“Not all of the humans are participating.”
The cluster fell silent to mull over these observations and Gst’ck handed the clairifier back to it’s owner with a profoundly fatalistic shrug. Below them human after human was hurtling themselves across the undulating wave riding bridge in what appeared to be an utterly futile attempt to get across it. It was obvious that this was some bizarre from of play behavior. There was nothing at the other end of the bridge to tempt them and their dingy was conveniently docked beside the main cluster of humans.
Gst’ck knew very well that her own cluster of highly educated University graduates was not going to achieve anything more practical than processing this display of hubris and endothermy on the part of the humans. She might as well pack up her tools and return to her mobile office while they observed the cacophony on the docks. She had several grant proposals to write, and something productive might as well be accomplished.
