I Was Almost a Prepper

Almost five years ago, I had a ton of anxiety. I dont remember if it was before or after the breaking-my-face issue or if it was triggered by the Ebola virus coming to Dallas, but I started reading prepper blogs. I listened to prepper podcasts and tried to prepare by purchasing shelf stable food.

At some point, though, I convinced myself that I was being silly. Maybe it was because Spreadsheet Guy wasnt worried or because I finally got on anxiety (Ive been off them almost a year now)...

Sandy Recommends: Promise of Darkness by Bec McMaster

I need to start writing down why I pick up a book. I can’t remember what made me try a sample of Promise of Darkness. Maybe it was in an Also Bought list? I dunno, but I’m glad I gave it a try because it was fantastic.

I’ve come across Bec McMaster’s name a lot. I think she first jumped on my radar with her steampunk series, but I’ve never really read steampunk, so I never picked it up. I’m going to have to give that series a try because I really loved her worldbuilding, her characters,...

Sandy Recommends: Wanted and Wired

Have you ever picked up a book, fallen in love with it, and then became mad at the world because why the heck didn’t anyone tell you how awesome it is? That’s how I feel about this book.

I’ve seen the cover on Amazon a few times. I might have even read the blurb but some other shiny book always captured my attention. I have no idea why I finally picked it up. I thought it was because an author I followed mentioned it (maybe Amanda Bouchet? But the mention would have to have been in the l...

Sandy Recommends: Kingdom of Exiles by Maxym M. Martineau

This book is pitched as Assassin’s Creed meets Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Despite me not loving the Fantastic Beasts movie–I didn’t even finish it!–the description enthralled me. I read the full summary and was hooked.

The book is told in first person and alternates between Leena and Noc’s POVs. Leena is a Charmer, a person who is able to summon beasts. Basically, she connects with or “tames” them, and takes them to her beastiary, which is a magical world where all the beas...

Scholastic Books and Super Rabbit Boy!

Summer is here! Which means my time has suddenly become very limited. Boo. I’m waking up a couple of hours before the boys so that I can get work done, but those two hours are pretty much the only focused writing/work time I have. Anyone else looking forward to August? lol

I want the boys to read a lot this summer. For one, it’s no problem. That kid picks up any book in sight. Sure, he’d rather be playing video games, and it’s hard to read when your brother is distracting you, but he’s a...

Whatever happened to the Shadow Reader books?

Yall probably haven’t noticed. After all, if you’re here, it’s likely because you already read the books (unless you’re here because of the anomaly novels, and if you are, I adore you!). But you can’t find an electronic copy of McKenzie’s books online anymore because…

I got my rights back!

I’m so excited, you guys. I have plans to re-release the trilogy at the end of the month. I’ve had to reformat the interiors, and I’ve had to get new covers.

The last part kills me. I was blessed by...

Sandy Recommends: Polaris Rising by Jessie Mihalik

I have to apologize, ya’ll. I have done no editing or writing in the last twenty-four hours. Instead, I was sucked into Polaris Rising by Jessie Mihalik. It was so, so good! From beginning to end! The perfect blend of sci-fi romance, which is so freaking hard to find. Read this book, you guys. I LOVED it!

I heard about it when Ilona Andrews mentioned it on her blog. She recommends it, so of course it has to be good, right? I read the first chapter a while back and was definitely interested...

The Urban Fantasy is Done!

Okay. It’s not done done, but the first draft is written and it’s pretty darn solid. I couldn’t be happier! I haven’t “finished” a book in a long time.

I made my January 20,000 word count goal. I’d like to write that much every month (except December; I’ve given up on Decembers). I’m not sure how that’s going to work out for February, though, since I’ll be revising. The plan is to edit a chapter a day. I’m hoping I can also write new words, either on Kennedy’s second book or the third anoma...

An Ode to the Nerf Zombie Swords

Yall, I will never be a poet, but we LOVE these Nerf swords. They’re definitely worth the effort to write a review. I went on Amazon to do just that. Oddly, though, my review kept rhyming. So I shrugged and just…went with it

Dear Nerf Zombie Swords,

You have served us well.

When I bought you online in 2015
I had no idea how long you’d be on our team.

You showed up on our doorstep in a box that was rather large
But I tore you open because our credit card was charged.

There in the bottom lay thr...
