Maggie “Don’t dis Granny Andersson,” he commented with a rather wry tone.
“You’re far too old to be using the term dis, my good man.”
“Yah? Well, last night you weren’t dissing me,” he countered quickly. I held up my hairbrush in a sign of defeat. He was right. There was no dissing last night. There was some moaning, gyrating, and pillow thumping, but nary a dis. “Ha! That got you good, eh?”
I nodded to give the man his due. His face split into a wide grin, white teeth brilliant against the dark brown of his beard.
“Yah, that’s right. Who is the man?” he asked, puffing out his chest like a proud bantam rooster.
Cocky bugger.
“You are.” I sighed with proper defeatism in my tone.
He dropped his face to my neck, smooched my ear loudly, and then whistled gleefully while he finished shaving. I cleaned shaving cream out of my ear with the corner of a hand towel. Ever since we moved in with Derrick, my mornings have been so much more enjoyable. We wake up curled around each other, we play as we shower.
Sometimes we play in the shower! The man makes me smile. He warms my heart when I awaken more than the sun that creeps into our window bright and early. I simply cannot imagine not having these precious few moments every morning now. After he had stepped into the shower, I thought to ask. Mascara wand in my right hand I turned to stare at his large form behind smoked glass. The query was lingering on the tip of my tongue. I swallowed it down. I’d let him broach the subject of his retirement ceremony tonight. Things with the team were dicey to say the least. Not a player or person in management wasn’t walking on eggshells. I turned back to the mirror to finish my makeup as Derrick hummed something by Blake Shelton as he lathered and rinsed.
We emerged from our room about twenty minutes later, Derrick in the suit and tie all NHL players and staff are required to wear into and leaving the stadium. His tie was loose yet, and his dark brown jacket lay over his left arm. I had pulled on a rather somber looking navy dress, as I would be accompanying Isabelle to court yet again. Just thinking about my duties made me nervous. There was so much to handle being the personal assistant to a woman that owns a hockey team, as well as several other multimillion-dollar businesses. Thank God I was only tasked with making sure Isabelle’s day ran like clockwork. My boss worried me. Her blood pressure was skyrocketing, her sugar count was high, and her OB/GYN had given her strict dietary guidelines to follow. I feared if she went back next Monday at nine, and her BP and sugar weren’t any lower, her doctor would be forced to put her on strict bed rest until her son was born. Knowing Isabelle that would last exactly four hours. Then she would be up doing something. What if Philip were found guilty? She would be forced to fire him. The Commissioner was already riding her like Secretariat about the Wildcats. First Petro and now Philip. And this mess surrounding last year's Stanley Cup winners? The commissioner was not happy. Not at all.
“Hey, you need to put them there grinds into the filter and not the pot, Mags.”
I shook off the spiraling dark thoughts. There I stood, in my kitchen, the coffee pot filled with coffee, and the filter resting inside the basket empty.

Silent Melody by C.A. Tibbitts @catibbitts ~ Release & Fun Facts about the Author

ECHO STARED AT THE CRYSTAL blue water as it lapped up on the rocky shoreline. She wrapped her arms around her bent legs, lacing her fingers together as her chin rested on her knees. Her brilliant white, curly hair hung in ringlets that brushed against the large rock she perched upon.
It was a lonely existence, and she was so tired of it all. The only thing she loved to do— sing— was the very thing she couldn’t do. Well, that wasn’t true. She could do it, if she wanted the shores of her home littered with ship wreckage… again.
Oh yes, the stories were true. Sirens, such as she, could sing the most awful, unattractive words, and men would still steer their ships straight at the rocky coast and usually drowned before they made it to shore.

Fun facts about me:
1. I love birds! I have one (a parakeet). 2. I’m double-jointed, which led to teasing as a kid (which I also found funny)! 3. I have a shoe addiction! Mainly embellished flip-flops, but other kinds too (not heels, I’d break my ankles). 4. I missed a college 4.0 GPA in the very last semester when one professor gave me a B (still upset about that!)! 5. I am very OCD about certain things (see #6). 6. I have an extensive DVD/Blu-ray collection and it has to be kept in alphabetical order! 7. My favorite vacations involve a cruise. I’ve been on 15 so far! 8. I’m quiet and sort of shy until I get to know a person. 9. I’m quick witted and believe sarcasm is my best friend. 10. I hate hot weather.

This book is just brilliant and so damn good.

Muffy Wilson is beginning to be one of my favorite authors.

Reading The Para-Portage of Emily made me feel like I was reading Jane Austen or one of the Bronte sisters, if they had written erotic romances. Wilson's descriptive prose paints a scene like an artist paints a landscape. The story itself is hauntingly beautiful

Ash & Oak by Nya Rawlyns @Nya_Rawlyns ~ A Crow Creek Novel

When Oak Richards accepts Ash MacBryde’s offer of employment to train horses at Crow Creek ranch after months of negotiations and skyping, burning up the airwaves late into the night, they finally meet face-to-face at the Denver airport:
“You were waiting for,” Ash blinked and ticked off the time, “what, almost four hours?” “I didn’t want to make you wait if the flight was delayed.”
Of course you didn’t.
And he would have been stuck in the baggage area with no place to sit, nothing to eat or drink. Waiting, because he didn’t want his new employer to be inconvenienced.
Not that he was trying to up the ante, but Ash explained, “The roads are bad,” and waved a hand around the room. “I figured it might be better not to drive home tonight. It’s seven hours or so. Longer if the weather’s bad.”
Oak finally looked him in the eye and sputtered, “S-seven hours?”
It was Ash’s turn to shrug. He wasn’t sure who was going to win in the non-verbal communication category. So far it seemed pretty much a draw.
Glancing at his watch, he asked, “You hungry?”
Ash marveled as gratitude blossomed in bottomless blue eyes, followed by hesitancy and a fierce reluctance to appear at all dependent. He understood that all too well. He’d been there for many long months after his father kicked him out, relying on handouts to survive, doing whatever it took. It was one reason he’d ended up in the military. Uncle Sam and the Corps had given him the one gift he’d thought he lost forever that Christmas Eve so many years ago: his self-respect.
Although he was more comfortable judging horses than people, Oak was like an open book to him. And that was yet another reason to go slow. They were too much alike, skittish with anything new. Oakley Richards was going to require time and gentling.
He hoped to hell he was a good enough man for the job.

Gavin’s gaze was drawn back to the castle’s battle-scarred walls and the heavily armed guards. The evil emanating from the structure surrounded and held him captive, like a lone deer surrounded by hungry wolves in the dead of winter, unable to move, its eyes glassy with fear, its limbs frozen by the hypnotic gleam of the wolves’ yellow eyes. Even knowing its life was ending, the deer wouldn’t break and run. So Gavin sat frozen in front of the castle. The enormity of his quest enveloped Gavin and he sighed. Continuing on meant he might save the Wild Man, but he might put himself in danger as well. King Edward was his father’s enemy and possibly responsible for Aldred’s murder. If Gavin were caught, Edward wouldn’t treat him kindly. The young prince summoned his courage and focused on the Wild Man. It had seemed so simple last night in the company of Bryan and Philip.
Philip
Looking at the stack of chopped wood, he smiled sadly. Two years ago he would never have dreamed he’d be here, chopping wood for food and a dry place to sleep. He shook his head at his thoughts, his shaggy, ill-cut black hair falling unevenly across his forehead. Two years. It seemed like forever. Two years earlier, he had lived with his parents and baby brother on their small farm up north. His parents worked hard to put food on the table and to pay off the farm. Philip’s main job was to watch baby Benjamin while his mother helped his father in their small field. When Benjamin fell sick, Philip helped his father clear the old stalks and rocks from the soil while his mother nursed the baby. He helped his father carefully plant the winter wheat and barley for harvest in the spring. As autumn slipped into winter, Benjamin hadn’t gotten better. His tiny body burned with fever. Those last few days when Philip held him, the heat coming from Benjamin threatened to slowly engulf him like the embers of a dying fire.
Bryan
In the five years he’d been James’s apprentice, Bryan had learned a lot. He made a sturdy sword, so James said. Two years still remained in his apprenticeship. Two long years.Like most sons of tradesmen or farmers, his family had secured this apprenticeship early on. At eleven, he and his father had made the three-day journey south to the Pembroke Castle blacksmith. At first, the prospect of being away from home, on his own, and learning a respectable trade, was exciting. More importantly, it allowed him to see and talk with real knights. He spent every day learning how to forge stronger swords, tougher armour, how to shoe horses, and even make pots and pans. It was a satisfying trade and one that would ensure him a livelihood. But Bryan didn’t want just a livelihood. Even now, only two years away from completing his apprenticeship, he still couldn’t see himself working with metal for the rest of his life. As long as he could remember, he had wanted only one thing: to be a knight like Sir Lancelot.

EXCERPTPrince Gavin
